New Maps app is rare Apple flub

11 hrs.

With a touch of?geek whimsy, Google Maps warns anyone who seeks walking directions to Mordor ?the land of evil in "The Lord of the Rings"? to use caution. "One does not simply walk into Mordor," it says. Apple is finding this week that creating an alternative to Google Maps isn't a simple walk, either.

Apple released an update to its iPhone and iPad operating system on Wednesday that replaces Google Maps with Apple's own application. Early upgraders are reporting that the new maps are less detailed, look weird and misplace landmarks. It's shaping up to be a rare setback for Apple.

"It's a complete failure," said Jeffrey Jorgensen. "It's slower, its directions are poorer and its location data doesn't seem to be accurate. All around, it's not quite there yet."

Jorgensen, a user interface designer for a San Francisco-based startup, began using Apple Maps months ago, because Apple made it available early to people in its software development program. He said he finds himself relying on Google Maps running on his wife's Android phone instead.

The most-hyped feature of the new app is a "Flyby" mode that shows three-dimensional renderings of buildings and other features. It presents a convincing depiction of the canyons of Manhattan, but has a hard time rendering bridges and highway overpasses, which tend to look wobbly or partly collapsed.

The Apple app also has a tendency to judge landscape features by their names. For instance, it marks the hulking Madison Square Garden arena in New York as green park space because of the word "Garden" in its name. The TD Garden football stadium in Boston gets the same treatment.

Conversely, Apple Maps marks "Airfield Gardens," a farm and plant nursery in Dublin, Ireland, as an airfield. This prompted the country's Justice Minister, Alan Shatter, to warn pilots on Thursday not to land there.

"Clearly the designation is not only wrong but is dangerously misleading in that it could result in a pilot, unfamiliar with the area, in an emergency situation and without other available information, attempting a landing," he said.

Marcus Thielking, the co-founder of mapping-app developer Skobbler, said the lapses of the Apple app are surprising, particularly since Apple purchases map data from an established provider, Tele Atlas.

"The combination of Apple and TomTom screwing up something like this is very odd. Apple is not the first and only company using Tele Atlas maps," Thielking said.

Tele Atlas is a subsidiary of TomTom, a Dutch maker of navigation devices.

"We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and we are just getting started," said Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. The app will work better the more people use it, she said, alluding to fact that users can report errors and omissions from within the app.

Google has been in the mapping game for much longer, giving it the benefit of years of error reports to help shape its maps.

There's been a Google Maps app on the iPhone since it was launched in 2007, but it's always come with the operating system. Now that it's gone from the list of "core" apps, users are finding that it's not available for download either. Google says its goal is to make Maps available, but hasn't said when that will be.

In the meantime, iPhone and iPad owners can access maps.google.com through their browser, said Google spokesman Nate Tyler. The browser version has fewer features but uses a comprehensive mapping database, he said.

Last year, Apple released another software product that many regard as half-baked: the voice-controlled virtual assistant Siri. But Siri's ability to ??at least sometimes?? understand spoken queries was something most users hadn't met before, so they forgave its lapses. With Maps, Apple is replacing an app nearly every smartphone user is already familiar with.

User reaction on social media has been fierce. One Twitter user quipped that the lines of people queuing up to buy the iPhone 5 on Friday will be shorter, because the buyers will be misled by the new Maps.?

Oil's slide continues toward $91 a barrel

Oil prices fell closer to $91 a barrel on Thursday, sagging for a fourth straight day as high U.S. inventories and weak economic data from Europe, China and Japan reinforced fears of a deeper global downturn.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for October delivery was down 45 cents to $91.53 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished at $91.98 on Wednesday, dropping $3.31, or 3.5 percent.

In London, Brent crude traded on the ICE Futures exchange was down 54 cents to $107.65 a barrel.

Figures from Europe, Japan and China reminded investors that the world's economy is struggling, though a positive bond auction from Spain helped limit the retreat in markets.

Among the sobering news for investors was a survey in Europe pointing to a deepening recession in Europe, figures from Japan that showed the country's powerhouse export sector was continuing to suffer and a private survey of manufacturers in China that showed activity fell again in September, though at a slightly slower pace than August.

Signs that the global economy is slowing down tend to push oil prices lower because people and businesses use less energy.

"The extended losses are hinting more and more that the bullish impact of (quantitative easing) had already been priced into the market for several weeks and that the focus is now on weaker global economic growth indicators," said analysts at JBC Energy in Vienna.

Separately, crude inventories grew three times more than analysts had expected last week. Crude supplies grew by 8.5 million barrels to 367.6 million barrels. That's 8.4 percent higher than at the same time last year, according to the Energy Information Administration's weekly report.

Analysts said the uptick in inventory was tied to the return of production by U.S. Gulf Coast refineries after being shut down by Hurricane Isaac.

"We can safely assume that most of this has been on the back of platforms returning to production ... we are seeing the return of the refineries in the Gulf area too," Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said in a newsletter.

Some experts said the large price drop this week was exaggerated and likely to be reversed soon.

Analysts at Commerzbank said they regard "the scale and above all the speed of the price slide as excessive" even if the crude stockpile figures indicate that the market is "amply supplied" at present.

"This is all the more true given that other economic barometers such as equity markets and copper ? a cyclical commodity ? have defended their gains over the same period," they said. "We expect to see a countermovement in the next few days."

In other futures trading in New York, wholesale gasoline was up 2.24 cents at $2.7497 per gallon. Heating oil rose 1.82 cents to $3.0622 per gallon. Natural gas added 2.4 cents to $2.786 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Chicago mayor seeks court order to end teachers' strike as second week begins

CHICAGO - Chicago's mayor turned to the courts Monday to try to end a teachers' strike in the nation's third-largest school district that entered its second week.

The strike has been uncomfortable for the Obama administration with the presidential election approaching, as Mayor Rahm Emmanuel is a former chief of staff to President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential candidates like Obama traditionally get union support.

The strike is the first for the city's teachers in 25 years and has kept 350,000 students out of class.

Emanuel asked a state court Monday to force Chicago school teachers back to work. Emanuel spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said city attorneys asked the circuit court to force Chicago Teachers Union members off the picket line and back into classrooms.

The union and school leaders had seemed headed toward a resolution at the end of last week, but teachers decided Sunday to remain on strike, saying they needed more time to review a complicated proposal.

Central to the debate are two issues that have national concern: teacher evaluations and job security.

Emanuel said the strike was illegal because it endangers the health and safety of students and concerned issues ? evaluations and layoffs ? that state law says cannot be grounds for a work stoppage.

With an average salary of $76,000, Chicago teachers are among the highest-paid in the nation, and the contract outline calls for annual raises. But some teachers are upset it did not restore a 4 per cent raise Emanuel rescinded last year.

A look at tech companies with recent IPOs

Tech companies that have had initial public offerings of stock since last year have released their quarterly earnings reports. Here are highlights from some of them. The companies are all loosely Internet-related, though their businesses vary widely.

? July 25: Zynga Inc. says it lost money and received less revenue than anticipated in the second quarter because "CityVille," ''FarmVille" and other games are not attracting as many paying players as they should. Its stock tanked and dragged Facebook's shares as well because the social networking icon relies on Zynga for a good chunk of its revenue ? 12 percent last year. Revenue fell below Wall Street forecast, while expenses grew. The company says the number of players increased only because it got more players from its acquisition of OMGPop, the maker of the mobile game "Draw Something." Zynga began trading on Dec. 16, 2011.

Angie's List Inc. reports that its losses are still piling up as the company spends more to lure people to its online business-review service and persuade them to pay to see ratings on everything from plastic surgeons to sewer cleaners. Angie's List began trading on Nov. 17, 2011.

? July 26: Facebook Inc. says revenue grew 32 percent to $1.18 billion in the second quarter, slightly above analyst expectations. It had a net loss of 8 cents per share, mainly due to stock compensation expenses following its IPO. Adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share matched Wall Street's expectations. Investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, Facebook's stock tumbled. It was Facebook's first quarterly earnings report since public trading began on May 18, 2012. Facebook now has 955 million users, up about 50 million during the quarter.

? Aug. 1: Online review site Yelp Inc. reports a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue than Wall Street expected, surpassing analysts at a time when many of its fellow freshly public Internet companies are taking a beating from investors. Its outlook was also better than anticipated. Yelp began trading publicly on March 2, 2012.

? Aug. 2: LinkedIn Corp.'s net income fell in the latest quarter as the professional networking site spent more money to grow its business. But revenue grew faster than expected, and the company raised its forecast for the year. LinkedIn began trading publicly on May 19, 2011.

? Aug. 7: Jive Software Inc., which makes Facebook-type social networks for businesses, reports a smaller loss and higher revenue. But the midpoint of its full-year guidance falls below analysts' expectations. It began trading on Dec. 13, 2011.

? Aug. 13: Online deals website Groupon Inc. says its quarterly earnings beat Wall Street's profit estimates, but it underwhelmed analysts with sales growth hurt by unfavorable currency movements. A weaker euro and U.K. pound meant that sales made in Europe got converted back into fewer U.S. dollars. Groupon began trading publicly on Nov. 4, 2011.

? Aug. 14: Shares of Angie's List suffers the biggest one-day drop and closes at a new low following the expiration of a ban that had prevented some investors from dumping millions of additional shares. The price dropped, even though there was no word on whether any of the major investors had dumped their shares.

? Aug. 16: Facebook's stock hits all-time low after the expiration of a similar ban.

? Aug. 20: Facebook's stock trades below $19 ? half its IPO price ? for the first time, though it bounces back to close at $20.01. It's disclosed that Peter Thiel, one of Facebook's earliest investors and a member of its board, was among the insiders selling stock after a lockup expired a few days earlier.

? Aug. 29: Pandora Media Inc. reported results that resonated well on Wall Street, even though the Internet radio service's losses widened. The setback was offset by evidence that Pandora's efforts to attract more listeners and sell more advertising on mobile devices are paying off. Pandora's management predicted the company's performance in the current quarter will be better than analysts had expected. Pandora began trading publicly on June 15, 2011.

? Sept. 5: Zynga releases a "FarmVille" sequel, something it hopes will reverse a slowdown in revenue growth and a slide in its stock price.

? Sept. 11: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the performance of Facebook's stock "has obviously been disappointing," and will probably cause some demoralized employees to defect. But he said he hopes most workers will stay and "double down" on Facebook's future.
