Playwright, screenwriter William Hanley dies at 80

(AP) ? William Hanley, a Broadway playwright and award-winning screenwriter who scripted a pioneering TV film that dealt with incest, has died. He was 80.

His daughter, Katherine Hover, said he died Friday at his home in Ridgefield, Conn.

Hanley's works include "Slow Dance on the Killing Ground" and "Mrs. Dally Has a Lover" and the teleplays "The Long Way Home" and "The Kennedys of Massachusetts."

He won Emmys for the TV movies "The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank" and "Something About Amelia."

"Amelia," which first aired in 1984 on ABC, explored the largely taboo topic of parental sexual abuse. Ted Danson, then the star of hit sitcom "Cheers," portrayed a doting, well-to-do father exposed as having had sexual relations with his teenage daughter. Glenn Close played the mother in the critically acclaimed, top-rated program, which also won Emmys for outstanding drama special and for young Roxanne Zal, who played the abused daughter.

In addition, Hanley wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film, "The Gypsy Moths," as well as several novels.

Hanley is also survived by another daughter, Nell Hanley; a sister, Patricia Hanley; and three granddaughters.

Divorce to Remarriage: Your Step by Step Guide to Step-Parenting ...

As many of you are preparing to re-marry, you probably have expectations of what life will be like with your new spouse and new family. You?re thinking something along the lines of ?happily ever after? perhaps? Sorry to burst your bubble but let?s take time out for a quick reality check.

People rarely have a clue what a relationship with a step-child will be like. It?s not because we?re stupid. It?s just that there aren?t any guide books for step families. We just assume it?s ok to play by biological family rules. This leads to many false assumptions. Today, I?d like to look at some of the most common and present a more realistic view of what you?re likely to experience.

1. I get along fine with the children now, so our relationship will only improve once I?m married to their parent.

  • Children view their relationship with you VERY differently once you are married to their parent. Things are permanent now. Any hopes they may have been holding onto about mom and dad reconciling are dead, and you?re a part of that death. This quite obviously can cause serious resentment.

2. The kids are only over every other weekend. That shouldn?t cause much of a disruption to our home life.

  • Just because a child is over every other weekend, doesn?t mean they can?t wreak havoc on your home and life. I receive tons of questions from fledgling step-parents struggling with what to do to manage what they view as the ?disruption? to their lives when the kids come to visit. It?s not that they don?t like the kids, it?s just that their usual schedule gets turned topsy turvy.

3. My partner loves me, so naturally the kids will too.

  • Nowhere does it say that just because a child?s parent loves you, that they have to. Many kids have the opinion that they already have 2 parents and they aren?t interested in having any more. Your goal should be for a civil, friendly relationship rather than one full of love. If you get love, great! But, don?t count on it.

4. I?m an adult? How tough can it be to win a kid over?

  • It can be VERY difficult to ?win over? a step-child. The problem is your attitude. It?s really a manipulative one. Rather than ?win? them over, the focus needs to be on being present in their lives and slowly trying to build a relationship with them.

5. I won?t have to be the ?bad guy? with these kids. My spouse will take care of all the discipline.

  • While this SHOULD be the way things go, it rarely does. Most of the time single parents are so happy to have another adult in the house, they expect that person to step in and share the responsibility of discipline.

6. My new spouse will make sure the kids treat me with respect.

  • This is another one that SHOULD happen, but unfortunately a lot of parents are still wrestling with a sense of guilt over breaking up the family. The guilt continues as the parent feels that the children are being forced into a new and different family. A lot of times this guilt plays out by parents not requiring their children to treat the new member of the family (that would be you, by the way) with the respect they deserve.

There are a lot of factors that determine what your relationship with your step-child will look like. Today we looked at the most typical of reactions. Why Romney can?t quit Trump

Top Line

Mitt Romney has crossed the threshold, gathering the majority of delegates in last night's Texas primary. And to celebrate this moment in his trajectory to the Republican nomination, Romney chose to stand onstage at a Las Vegas fundraiser ... with Donald Trump.

Trump is still embracing "birther" theories, saying that President Obama was not born in the United States, despite the fact that the Obama administration has clearly proven he was. Romney appearing with Trump is?a revealing moment in how the Rommey campaign thinks about the general election. Team Romney thinks that even now -- with the primary battle in the rear view mirror -- there is a danger in alienating someone like Donald Trump -- the campaign doesn't know what he might do on the outside, and it does not know what people who agree with Trump might do with their support.

But the Romney campaign is no longer just wooing Republican base voters, it is in the hunt for those crucial independents, too. So why cater to the Donald? Check out this week's Top Line to find out.

Wine hoax fools industry elite

Rare-wine collectors are savvy, competitive guys with a taste for impossible finds. The biggest hoax in history took place right under their noses.
Even at Rudy Kurniawan?s coming-out party in September 2003, there were questionable bottles of wine.
A score of Southern California?s biggest grape nuts had gathered at the restaurant Melisse in Santa Monica that Friday for a $4,800-a-head vertical tasting of irresistible rarities provided by Kurniawan: P?trus in a dozen vintages, reaching as far back as 1921, in magnums.
Paul Wasserman, the son of prominent Burgundy importer Becky Wasserman, is something like wine royalty, but before this event, the oldest P?trus he had tasted was from 1975.
Nonetheless, two bottles left him scratching his head. The 1947 lacked the unctuousness of right-bank Bordeaux from that legendary vintage, and the 1961 struck him as ?very young.? He briefly entertained the idea of ?possible fakes???61 P?trus in magnum has fetched up to $28,440 at auction?and jotted, in his notes on the ?47, ?If there?s one bottle I have serious doubts about tonight, this is it.?
But in the rare-wine world, doubts are endemic; murkiness is built into a product that is concealed by tinted glass and banded wooden cases and opaque provenance and the fog of history.
Guests at tastings don?t want to bite the hand that quenches them. Auctioneers may not want to risk losing consignments by nitpicking ambiguous bottles. Winemakers don?t like to talk about counterfeiting, for fear of the taint. Also, one thing not high on the FBI?s list of investigative priorities: billionaires getting snowed by wine forgers.

5 Internet Marketing Musts for Small Businesses | Business 2 ...

inbound-marketing-communityYou?ve done it. You have realised that the web is now another piece of your business puzzle and something you need to make a start on. Great!

But all of this can seem a little daunting with a lot of technical jargon and constant updates on ideas. However, this can be a little guide to get your started.

  1. First up, ?Stay Savvy? and get learning. SEO is your friend, as it?s a basic knowledge of HTML. Unfortunately, this area has become a playground of good cops and bad cops and I?ve heard of small businesses paying up to 865,000 rupee for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) services which I totally over prices! There is no such thing as a free lunch and with internet marketing this is very true! By learning the basic elements of this yourself, you can begin some elementary optimisation yourself and understand what your consultant tells you. Follow your gut and seek some independent opinion on any quotes and strategies you might get. Google offer some great resources for beginners to find out about SEO and what makes great optimisation and On the whole, there are some amazing SEO?s out there but just be careful!
  2. Get Creative. Internet marketing has changed the link between businesses and customers and modern consumers are much more aware of the power they have. With this comes a change in your plans. If you spend 5 hours a week planning traditional, outbound marketing change that and dedicate your time to inbound marketing, where customers come to your website for a whole range of reasons! (see the great graphic above courtesy of Jennifer Sable Lopez at SEOmoz) This is also your time to get thinking. A great way of getting more traffic to your website is by creating quality, interesting and unique content. Infographics, videos, twitter trends, images, anything! This is your time to shine and make yourself better than your competition.
  3. As this might be something new for your business, find out what works for you and your customers early on. Try surveys and analytics and test your internet marketing. If ?x? doesn?t create and leads but ?y? does then test that. I suppose the best thing to do is not be caught up in any trends and make an internet marketing strategy that works for you and your customers; smiling faces all round.
  4. Remember your centre point is your website and your brand. Everything you do needs to lead to your website so ensure that the more you expand your online marketing make sure it ultimately leads back to your main site. The same goes for social media. If your Twitter followers are getting bigger then gently push them to your site. Inbound/Internet marketing works in a funnel style (see above) so the aim is to keep users retained from start to finish.
  5. Measure. Set up Google Analytics, record your social subscribers and email subscribers and make regular records of their numbers to understand your audience. Google tells you everything and there are measurement tools for Twitter too to understand your audience like Social Bro. Keep an eye on what works and adapt your strategy around that to keep your users following through the entire website.

So there you go. A basic introduction to internet marketing. Make a start and watch your website grow! Get your team together and decide what you are going to do and make some performance indicators. There is a lot of help online with blogs like HubSpot, SearchEngineLand and SEOmoz (to name a few) but the key is to attract users to your site, to convert them to customers and then create leads into your business. All of your internet marketing should focus on this 3 step funnel approach.

Commentary: Investing into China technology park needs further ...

Commentary: Investing into China technology park needs further consideration

Julian Ho, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES?[Monday 28 May 2012]

TPV Technology, the world's largest LCD display producer, began construction of a technology park in Pingtan Island in China's Fujian Province in December 2011. Pingtan Island was chosen because of its short distance across the sea from Taiwan. Despite strong support from TPV, some small- and medium-size firms in Taiwan believe the technology park is more suitable for large-size firms. In addition, low transparency of business policies in China has been causing Taiwan-based firms to think twice before investing.

LCD display moving west-ward

In fact, from the perspective of the global LCD display end market industry, China's domestic market is important for Korea-, Japan-, Taiwan- and China-based firms. The consumption power of developed market such as the US and Europe has been waning due to economic woes, so the LCD industry is looking to the potential of China's market.

Japan-based LCD display firms saw market share fall in 2011, while China-based competitors rose. Although TCL and Hisense are the only two China-based TV brands that shipped over 10 million units in 2011, others also have been showing strong ambitions to surpass industry leading firms such as Sharp.

TPV's largest shareholder is China-based Great Wall Computer Shenzhen, which is a part of China Electronics Corporation. TPV has been developing China's market for quite some time and in 2011, the firm's market share in LCD display OEM business reached 35%. A strong relationship built by Jason Hsuan, chairman and CEO of TPV, with different industry leaders helped the firm to reach success in the market.

TPV noted that there have been many firms in other countries such as Singapore and South Korea that want to develop the technology park in Pingtan Island. Taiwan-based firms should capture the opportunity to join this technology park.

Not suitable for small- and medium-size firms

Hsuan pointed out that Pingtan's development needs less than 20 years to complete.

According to government data in China, the government invested over CNY30 billion (US$4.73 billion). In addition to TPV, Xielli Group also invested in CNY12 billion for the IC business in the technology park. The initial investments from Xielli were CNY7.3 billion and the construction of the packaging facility is estimated to be completed by end of 2012. The 6-inch wafer plant has been scheduled to begin production in first-half 2014.

Furthermore, Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom has been discussing cooperation with China Telecom's Fujian Office to build a "smart Pingtan" through joint effort on planning, investing, constructing, managing, and profit-sharing.

Despite optimistim on the development of Pingtan by industry leaders such as Jason Hsuan, Taiwan's industry players have different views. Leaders in small- and medium-size enterprises believe the development trend of Pingtan's technology park is more suitable for large-size corporations.

According to Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, China has been eager to recruit Taiwan-based firms to set up plants in Pingtan's technology park. However, Taiwan's government has not been participating in the project. Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan also indicated some risks for Taiwan-based firms to invest in the technology park due to lack of complete infrastructure.

Lack of transparency

In addition, the lack of transparency in China politics and the complex relationships between politics and business have been concerns for Taiwan-based firms. Despite short-term benefits, Taiwan-based firms may in fact be exporting technologies to China, which would cripple Taiwan's competitiveness.

TPV noted that the promotion of Pingtan's technology park is to provide opportunities for the following generation.

Nevertheless, the historical, political and industrial problems between China and Taiwan cannot be overlooked or simplified through the perspective of business.

PFT: Ex-Dolphin testifies in bizarre murder case

Bart Scott, Jamaal WestermanAP

Jets linebacker Bart Scott is the latest player to come forward to say that even though the game of football has been great for his own life, he doesn?t think it?s worth the risk of injury for his son.

Scott told the New York Daily News that even though he has been richly rewarded for playing the game he loves, he doesn?t believe it?s the right sport for most people.

?I don?t want my son to play football,? Scott said. ?I play football so he won?t have to. With what is going on, I don?t know if it?s really worth it. . . . I don?t want to have to deal with him getting a concussion and what it would be like later in life.?

Keeping kids inside a protective bubble has plenty of risks, too ? there are a lot more kids struggling with health problems related to obesity than there are kids struggling with health problems related to football ? but Scott said his 7-year-old son will get his exercise through non-contact sports.

?He can play baseball,? Scott said. ?I really don?t want him boxing, either, even though he wants to box. I won?t let him box. It?s not worth it. The most important thing for me is him being around and me being able to spend a long time with him and I?m sure, at the end of the day, all the things I?m able to buy him from playing football, he?d much rather have me.?

Scott also knows, however, that if a kid is intent on playing football, it?s awfully tough for his parents to stop him.

?I can?t stop him from doing what he wants to do, but I would advise him and try to push other things in his face that may interest him,? he said. ?The more you tell him not to, the more he?s going to do it. I would support it, because he?s my son, but I also would try to push baseball in his face.?

If 7-year-old B.J. is as intense as his dad, it?s probably safe to say he can?t wait to get out on the football field, no matter how much his dad tries to steer him in another direction.

NEEDED: Motherhood | IgnitumToday

Greetings Ignitum?readers! My apologies for missing my last posting here a few weeks back. I?m sure you were all wondering where I was (uhh?hum) and/or waiting with bated breath for the announcement of my baby?s birth (you didn?t know I was even expecting?!). Well I am slowly coming out of the postpartum fog that has surrounded me since the birth of my fifth child, Levi Joseph three weeks ago today.? Late nights, lots of diaper changes, soreness from labor, delivery, and breastfeeding, trying to get life back to a new normal with five children?. It is all honestly exhausting and sometimes during the middle of the night feedings I pause and wonder, ?Why in the world do we do this?!??

Then I look down at this tiny bundle nestled here in my arms and smell the faint trace of Chrism oil still present from his recent baptism in his baby soft hair, and I reminded that this work is not of this world. I am overcome with emotions of intense gratitude and humility when I recognize that I have been asked to raise an eternal soul created by God in His own image and likeness.? I will have the honor of being called Mom by this beautiful child and his accomplishments and character will reflect the love I have invested in him. This is truly a gift that I cannot comprehend. ?This gift of Motherhood. This amazing gift that I never even knew I wanted until I was one. ?The role of a lifetime that I was called to from the moment of my creation by a God that knows my purpose better than I do. Motherhood.

Me with my two favorite men, my husband Josh and JP2 in 2004. I was asking Papa to bless my newly conceived child in this picture. I am fairly certain he prayed I would understand, accept, and share the beauty of the gift I was about to receive; motherhood.

Motherhood has been something I have been pondering a lot lately. You see I am passionate about something called New Feminism and have written a bit about it over The Guiding Star Project website?and? here at IT too. The idea and call for the New Feminist movement came from one of my favorite men, John Paul 2 in 1995 when he asked the women of the Church to establish an authentic form of feminine expression; one that works to turn back the destructive forces of the earlier feminists who promoted the idea of women independent and separated from men and children.? I believe what JP2 was really asking the faithful women was for us to embrace and elevate the status and vocation of motherhood in our culture to once again remind humanity what it means to be valued and cherished by a mother.

Embracing motherhood does not necessarily mean that a woman must conceive and give birth physically to children in order for her to ?mother?. In fact there are many women who have borne?children who have never really mothered. And on the flip side, there are many beautiful mothers whose wombs will never carry a child.? Motherhood is the expression of the feminine traits that are intrinsically built into us when we were created women. The unique talents and gifts of females are perfectly suited to the mothering of humanity. Our intuitions, communication skills, empathy, personalization of others, and emotional capacities are exactly what our world needs to see expressed to turn towards an attitude of appreciation and acceptance of life.? The feminine virtues expressed through the selfless sharing of our lives and acceptance of others is what JP2 was asking of today?s women when he called us to become New Feminists. He was asking us to exude the qualities of motherhood to a world very much in need of a mother?s love.? The people of our world need desperately to be reminded of and experience the unconditional, unending love of a mother.? Either by mothering her own children physically with great love and intention, or spiritually mothering those in her life with kindness and prayer, this selfless love is how women best show others the face of God.

?

Me and my fourth child, Ezra. As I?ve learned to accept and embrace motherhood, I?ve found purpose and passion for life.

I alluded briefly above that I never really necessarily wanted to be a mother.? I grew up a fairly competitive and driven young woman who perhaps felt a need to prove something to someone. Who I was trying to impress I?m not really sure (perhaps the women of the previous feminist movement?), but I felt like I?d be letting someone down if I didn?t add a few credentials to my title. And these credentials had to be in the forms of degrees, diplomas, and career advancements; not a spouse, children, or personal fulfillment. The pressure to fill these requirements of success led me to spend more time preparing mentally for the working world and not seriously considering motherhood as a call upon my womanhood. In fact, if someone had said that I was called by the mere coincidence of being a female to emanate some sort of ?motherhood vibe? to those around me, I would have likely found that very insulting of my intelligence and degrading of my accomplishments. I did not understand that I was being raised in a world where motherhood was all but lost outside our own little family units, and that this attack was leading to a massive cultural loss of respect for other human beings.

I can see these things now because, by God?s grace, I ended up falling in love, married, and became a mother before I was able to fall too deeply for the pride and lies of my old understanding of success.? I became a mother physically and very slowly began to understand that just as I need to teach my children to love their siblings and playmates and treat them kindly, someone too needs to teach this to all the motherless children and adults of our world who were simply not taught that everyone is created in God?s image and likeness and therefore deserves love and respect.? We have entire generations of people who were born into scenarios where they have been treated like burdens, or have been ignored for other pursuits, or have just not had the good fortune of a good mother figure in their lives to teach them their own and other?s worth. However, I firmly believe that no one is ever too old or too hardened to be reached by the kind of love that comes from a true mother. So there is hope.

If the women of today can recognize and embrace their uniquely feminine gifts and talents and express them to our world in the form of a mothering type of love, we can change the course of our nation.? If we can love our coworkers, and listen better to our in-laws, and provide non-judgmental support for the needy in our lives, then God can use those efforts to remind those most in need of their worth and value.? Just as the Father sent the Son to show humanity the way to live, He now sends the mothers to remind us just how special we all are and to bring the entire family home to heaven.

Lord Jesus Christ, just as You have entrusted me as a new mother with the eternal soul of my child, please bless all women with the grace to accept Your call to embrace our femininity and mother humanity home to You in heaven.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Childhood Obesity Is ... - Posterous

May 23rd, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Indy Star?..

I read a new childhood obesity study that arrived in the office mail the other day more as a parent than a journalist, curious about the growing epidemic among this nation?s alarmingly growing children. Although it?s hard to imagine my son suffering from the problem ? he?s a 15-month-old blaze of perpetual motion from sunrise to sunset ? I also know this is an issue no parent should take lightly.

It?s an issue the nation as a whole should take seriously, in fact, as it affects everything from medical bills to school success rates to economic growth. But it?s no surprise that the new report ? from Indiana University?s Center for Evaluation & Education Policy ? sends a particular warning flare to Hoosiers, as so many health-related reports do.

?Despite the attention focused on the issue at both the state and federal level, the childhood obesity epidemic has worsened,? the report says, adding that ?Indiana has lost ground nationally in the fight.?

Question by AbeJ: mortgage refinancing vs home equity loan?
I have a mortgage balance of $ 75000 to payoff, 8 years remaining.
Would it make sense to take a 15 year home equity loan to pay it off and reduce my monthly payment? My other option is to refinance to 15 year term from current APR of 6 % to a new APR of 5% with a closing cost of $ 2500

Best answer:

Answer by Jill
You are on the home stretch, you?re just paying principle now. A refi of any kind does not make sense? UNLESS you NEED to do a refi to make the monthly payment lower. If that is the case, just bite the bullet and get the best deal you can. You could even look at getting a 30 year and just know you plan to pay it off in 10 or 15 years on your own. Ask for all your options.

Encouraging independence means letting teens have a few secrets

One way to encourage independent teens: let go of the need to know everything that is going on in their lives. Our experts say that it is better for parents not to know about some of their teen's secrets.

By Jennifer Powell-Lunder and Barbara Greenberg,?Guest bloggers / May 23, 2012

Andrew Poticha, 17, right, and Erick Olsen, 17, both of Crystal Lake, Ill., back out of a parking space at Crystal Lake South High School on March 8, 2012. Parents need to let go of knowing everything about their teenagers if they want to encourage independence.

The truth is there are some things that as a parent of a teen, actually as a parent in general, you are better off not knowing. Stop a moment and think back to your own teen years. Think back to a specific time when you did something so risky, so dangerous, so stupid, or any combination of the three, that it is a miracle you are still around. Can you think back to a time when luck had to have been on your side because if it hadn?t been, you probably wouldn?t be reminiscing about this?? Now ask yourself, if by some chance your parents did not find out about this, did you tell them anyway? We are willing to bet that a large majority of you did not tell your parents.

While there were many reasons for not enlightening your parents, we would guarantee that besides wanting to avoid a consequence you also had their best interests in mind. We mean, why inform them after the fact when you were okay? Did they really need the anxiety, disappointment and even despair that could have easily ensued? So, where are we going with this? It is really quite simple: there are some things about your teens that you are probably better off not knowing.

There is much truth to the saying ?What doesn?t kill you makes you stronger.? As your teens work to establish their identities and assert their independence they are likely to make mistakes and missteps. Many of these you are probably better off not knowing about. You have raised them well, instilled in them the virtues and values that you felt were not only needed but necessary. It is during adolescence that parents need to allow their teens to try out their wings. If communication is strong and the bonds of trust and respect are mutual and firm, then you have done your job. If they need your assistance, advice or the wisdom of your experience they are likely to fly back to you.

You can't encourage independence and autonomy by preventing them from trying to fly. While the shelter and protection of the nest may ease your anxiety, how will it help them if a predator comes swooping down to grab them?

The next time you have that urge to read that journal or diary that you know is hidden away in the desk or under the mattress, don?t. Repress the urge to listen in on their conversations with their friends, or read the notes from friends or ?significant others? stuffed in their pockets. When you model respect and honesty, your teens are most likely to follow suit. Now we do want to be clear. If you have noticed major changes in your teen?s appearance and or behaviors that concern you, sit down and gently discuss this with them. If your concerns continue, seek out the help of a professional. We are not recommending that you write off these changes as typical teen behavior.

If you feel confident that your teen generally makes good decisions and if your teen is growing, maturing and thriving emotionally and socially, chances are strong that he is headed in the right direction. You are better off not knowing about the times when he may have veered slightly off the path to the left or the right. There is a reason whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and in Vegas it should remain.

Powers, Iran discuss detail of possible nuclear deal

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iran and world powers exchanged unusually detailed proposals at talks in Baghdad on Wednesday in hopes of defusing a long standoff over suspicions Tehran's atomic energy programme may be a disguised quest for nuclear weapons.

The stakes could hardly be higher: global oil markets are jittery over extended Western sanctions imposed on Iran's vital crude exports and the specter of a Middle East war arising from possible Israeli strikes against its defiant arch-enemy.

But no breakthrough appeared to be in the offing in Baghdad, where the six powers were testing Iran's willingness to curb its uranium enrichment work. Differences remained, notably, over when Iran would be rewarded with relief from economic sanctions.

Two diplomats said the discussions were expected to resume on Thursday, but there was no immediate confirmation.

After a 15-month diplomatic freeze and exploratory talks in Istanbul last month, envoys for Iran and the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany convened with both sides publicly upbeat about the scope for an outline deal.

"We had a detailed exchange this morning," said a Western diplomat who spoke of the six powers presenting a 'package' of proposals in the morning. "The atmosphere was businesslike."

In the afternoon, another diplomat said, Iran reacted to the offers and "also broadened out the discussions to touch on other areas we see as non-core issues".

Iranian media close to the Tehran government said its chief negotiator Saeed Jalili presented its own five-point package of proposals covering a "comprehensive" range of nuclear and non-nuclear issues.

The official news agency IRNA sounded a note of discord by quoting Iranian officials as referring to the big-power proposal as "nitpicking" while student news agency ISNA said: "Apparently from the Iranian point of view this package is not balanced."

However, those leaks did not appear to be Tehran's final response as the talks ran on into the evening.

HIGHER-GRADE ENRICHMENT

The powers' overall goal is an Iranian agreement to curb uranium enrichment in a transparent, verifiable way to ensure it is for peaceful purposes only. Iran's priority is to secure an end to sanctions isolating the country and damaging its economy.

The pivotal proposal by the six, led by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, was for Iran to halt its enrichment of uranium to the higher fissile concentration of 20 percent, her spokesman Michael Mann said as talks got under way.

That is the Iranian nuclear advance most worrying to the West since it largely overcomes technical obstacles to reaching 90-percent, or bomb-grade, enrichment. Iran says it is enhancing the fissile purity to such a degree only for medical research.

"We have a new offer on the table which addresses our main concerns about the Iranian nuclear programme. The 20-percent enrichment question," Mann told reporters. "We hope the Iranians respond positively and we can make progress today."

In a separate interview with Iran's state-run English-language Press TV, Mann said no final deal was expected in Baghdad because progress was likely to be only gradual.

He said toughened sanctions, especially an EU ban on Iranian oil exports due to take full effect on July 1, had helped to draw Iran finally into serious negotiations.

Iran has hinted at flexibility on higher-grade enrichment although analysts caution that it would be unlikely to compromise much while sanctions remain in place.

In previous meetings the two sides could not even agree an agenda, with each largely repeating known positions and Tehran refusing any dialogue on changes to its nuclear path.

IRAN HOPES FOR "GOOD NEWS" SOON

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, speaking to reporters in Tehran, said: "The ideas fielded to us speak of the fact that the other side would like to make Baghdad a success. We hope that in a day or two we can bring good news."

Salehi also warned that Iran would not bow to pressure: "Their policies of pressure and intimidation are futile. They have to adopt policies to show goodwill to solve this issue."

Russia said the Islamic Republic appeared ready for serious discussion of substantive steps to resolve the impasse in return for the phased removal of sanctions.

Speaking of preparatory discussions before Baghdad, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Moscow: "We got the clear impression ... that the Iranian side is ready to seek agreement on concrete actions." These would be taken step by step.

Another proposed step will be an updated version of an idea first floated in 2009 that envisaged Iran shipping out the bulk of its low-grade uranium - which could potentially be converted into weapons fuel - in return for higher-enriched fuel for the medical research reactor in Tehran, a diplomat said.

It was unclear whether that idea would gain traction after Iran's announcement on Tuesday that it had supplied its first batch of domestically made fuel to that reactor - a message probably meant to boost its leverage in negotiations.

The Islamic Republic launched higher-grade enrichment two years ago and has since transferred the operation to a bunkered, underground plant at Fordow that, to Israeli alarm, would be largely impervious to attack from the air.

"The key issue is the 20-percent enrichment potential. This has to be addressed in order to have a productive outcome," said one Western diplomat. "The marching orders for Baghdad are to have concrete ideas on the table, maybe not necessarily agree on all details of these ideas, but to have a clear commitment."

Iran, a major oil exporter, says it is enriching uranium for electricity. That requires fuel refined to 5 percent, although it will be many years before power stations are built. It also wants radioactive isotopes for cancer treatment.

Tehran has repeatedly ruled out suspending enrichment as called for by several U.N. Security Council resolutions.

DEAL ON EXPANDED U.N. INSPECTIONS "CLOSE"

In a possible sign of a new Iranian willingness to address concerns about its atomic ambitions, the U.N. nuclear supervisor said on Tuesday he expected to sign a deal soon to unblock an investigation into suspected Iranian attempts to design a nuclear weapon.

But Western officials note past failures to carry out deals on more intrusive inspections between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran, and their patience is running out.

Iran suggested it would try to parlay its reported rapprochement with the IAEA into a deal in Baghdad to relax sanctions inflicting increasing damage on its economy, including a European Union oil embargo due to take effect in July.

But Western officials ruled out such a weighty concession so soon, even though their call for a "step-by-step" negotiating process is widely seen as a tacit admission that sanctions will have to be eased at some point.

"Sanctions are only going to be lifted if we have significant and genuine progress," one diplomat said.

Israel, widely assumed to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal, has loudly expressed its skepticism about the chances for diplomacy to rein in its major adversary.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was concerned that the world powers would not press hard enough to put a full stop its nuclear programme and that Israel would keep all options open - an allusion to military action - to achieve that goal.

Obama to campaign in Iowa, promote energy plan

(AP) ? As President Barack Obama readies for a return to the Iowa State Fairgrounds, his campaign is reminding voters that it was in that same spot where Republican rival Mitt Romney declared last year that "corporations are people."

Democrats slammed Romney's assertion as a gaffe that showed the former Massachusetts governor was aligned with big business.

The Obama campaign uses a clip of Romney being heckled as he made his corporation remarks in a web video released Thursday morning. The 30-second video then says Obama will be in the same spot Thursday, telling voters, "See you there."

Obama will hold a grass-roots campaign event at the fairgrounds Thursday evening. Earlier in the day, Obama will be seeking support for an election-year agenda to encourage renewable energy along with a more immediate prize: the state's up-for-grabs voters.

Obama was pushing Congress to support clean energy tax incentives, part of his congressional "to-do list" that he contends could help bolster the economy. The president has tried to portray congressional Republicans as obstructing his ideas to create jobs and said Republican challenger Mitt Romney would follow their lead.

The president was stopping in Iowa on Thursday after attending fundraisers in Colorado and California, returning to the state that launched his presidential campaign in 2008 and could play a pivotal role in whether he gets a second term. Iowa is a prime general election target for Romney, who narrowly lost the state's caucuses but expects to compete for the state's six electoral votes.

Obama was visiting TPI Composites in Newton, Iowa, a manufacturer of wind turbine blades that employs about 700 workers in a community that once served as headquarters for appliance maker Maytag Corp.

The president plans to urge Congress to renew the federal production tax credit for the wind industry, which is set to expire at the end of the year, and expand a tax credit that supports clean energy manufacturing.

Obama's "to-do list" includes a number of economic initiatives that the president has pushed previously, aiming to help manufacturers, strapped homeowners and veterans.

Republicans say the renewable energy tax credits have failed to spur the job creation that Democrats once promised and more concrete steps ? like removing government barriers to energy production ? would have a greater impact on the economy.

Obama was starting his day with a private fundraiser in northern California, his third fundraiser over two days in Silicon Valley.

(AP) ? British director Ken Loach's new movie "The Angels' Share" is set in Scotland ? the perfect excuse to bring out the kilts in Cannes.

With a Scottish cast, it tells the tale of a young unemployed trouble-maker who finds redemption through whisky ? a result of his fine palate, not through turning to drink.

The film ? showing in competition at the French festival ? then matures into a liquor heist, with newcomer Paul Brannigan playing Robbie, a young Scottish criminal.

At a beach reception for the movie ahead of the world premiere Tuesday night the cast wouldn't confess what was under their kilts.

But Brannigan promises if they win the Palme D'Or prize they'll be happy to show people.

The Cannes Film Festival runs until May 27.

School programs lead fight against childhood obesity | Healthy Diet ...

HFLSolutions.com

Inside E.A. Jones Elementary School, the battle against childhood obesity is being fought with fresh ingredients.

Bulletin boards tout the merits of home gardens and expose the tongue-twisting preservatives in junk food. Students take a ?food adventurer? pledge, promising to sample new recipes and never to utter the words ?yuck? or ?gross.? Stainless steel bowls burst with a bounty of greens, vegetables and herbs freshly harvested from the school garden.

And fifth-grade chefs sport aprons and spout exuberant reviews of their seed-to-plate cooking class.

?I love it!? said Andy Jaime, 11, his eyes lighting up behind his glasses. ?We learn about different types of food and how to eat healthy.?

It?s a typical day in the Fort Bend ISD school?s culinary classroom, where professional chefs from Recipe for Success guide students through healthy cooking lessons, organic gardening and nutrition education.

The classes are one component of Activate for Kids, a health and fitness pilot program developed by UnitedHealthcare and the United Health Foundation. The program, which kicked off this year in six school districts in Texas, Florida and Georgia, is among a growing number using a more holistic approach to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic.

In addition to the cooking classes, Activate for Kids runs early morning Zumba aerobics classes for elementary students, an obesity intervention program for kids and their parents, and health and fitness fairs in the Fort Bend and Klein school districts.

In Sharpstown High School, one of 53 schools across the country participating in the HealthCorps program started by Dr. Mehmet Oz, students can take before-school meditation classes or participate in an after-school fitness club.

Recipe for Success, a Houston-based nonprofit that offers cooking, gardening and nutrition education classes in 13 Houston-area schools, is expanding its curriculum nationwide by offering online training and certification.

?More and more schools are realizing that this is something they need to do,? said Gracie Cavnar, the founder of Recipe for Success. ?All the data says weight patterns and food attitudes are set for life by age 11. Early intervention is mandatory.?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled over the last 30 years. Those children are at greater risk of diabetes, hypertension and other illnesses, are more likely to drop out of school, and demonstrate shorter attention spans.

Many of the programs incorporate nutrition education, cooking classes, fitness lessons, goal-setting techniques and emotional wellness tips.

Patterned after the Peace Corps, Healthcorps recruits new college graduates for two-year stints as school coordinators. At Sharpstown High Scool, Jornae Nevels leads cooking classes, fitness sessions and meditation training.

?It?s about exposing them to something new,? said Nevels, who also educates students about better food choices.

Activate for Kids offers anti-obesity training for school nurses and serves as a conduit between schools and community resources, said Stephanie Kellam, the wellness coordinator assigned to Fort Bend ISD. For example, the Recipe for Success classes at Jones Elementary are funded by a United Health Foundation grant.

If a recent fifth-grade cooking class is any indication, the program is already having an impact on the students.

That day, Recipe for Success chef Rakhi Desai ? Miss Rakhi to the kids ? led the class through the steps for making healthful pizza. The students chopped up fragrant bunches of oregano and parsley, rolled out whole-wheat dough and sprinkled rainbow-hued veggie toppings across the rectangular canvas.

But the real test came after the veggie and pesto pizzas came out of the oven, and everyone got a taste and a chance to review their creation.

?It?s delicious!? declared Andy. ?I would keep it exactly the way it is.?

FIFA delays appointing anti-corruption officials

(AP) ? FIFA President Sepp Blatter's anti-corruption drive hit another delay on Tuesday, even as soccer's world governing body appointed the first woman to its inner circle.

FIFA pushed back plans until July to select independent outsiders who will spearhead a new investigations unit. Critics want these officials to probe past allegations of wrongdoing in their new jobs leading prosecution and judging chambers of a revamped ethics court.

However, FIFA said one candidate to chair the judging division declined on Monday for health reasons.

"In view of this, the executive committee decided to hold an extraordinary meeting to designate both chairmen together," FIFA said in a statement.

A previous promise by Blatter to identify officials who took million-dollar kickbacks from World Cup marketing deals in the 1990s has stalled since October.

FIFA's 24-man ruling committee did manage to propose Lydia Nsekera of Burundi as the first female delegate to join their ranks. She would accept an initial one-year tenure before an open election for the dedicated women's post next year.

Swiss industrialist Domenico Scala was suggested by the executive body to chair a new audit committee, which will monitor FIFA's billion-dollar annual spending.

FIFA's 208 member countries must finalize those appointments at their annual Congress on Friday. The congress will not approve leaders of a modernized ethics investigation team, which was hailed by Blatter as a "historic" move in March.

FIFA's existing ethics committee, composed of officials from inside the "football family," suspended seven serving and former members of FIFA's high command in the past 20 months.

Still, it struggled to cope with a spate of allegations of wrongdoing during bidding contests for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The two-chamber court was requested by an expert panel led by former United Nations investigator Mark Pieth, who was picked by FIFA to advise on improving transparency and anti-corruption measures.

Pieth's 13-member group then submitted its list of candidates for lead roles which Blatter's executive committee was scheduled to present to Congress delegates.

They are expected to be leading figures from politics and civil society.

FIFA said the approved candidates and an updated code of ethics will be announced after its executive committee meets in the first week of July.

Nsekera can join that session in Zurich. She is the only female president of a national soccer federation, and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

She also serves on Pieth's reform advisory panel.

Scala brings years of experience working for Swiss biotech, pharmaceutical and food industry giants including Roche, Nestle and Syngenta.

He is also a member of the Board of Overseers of Tufts University in Boston, FIFA said.

In other decisions, FIFA will apply an insurance policy covering the salaries of players injured on national team duty to the London Olympics, instead of starting with 2014 World Cup qualifiers in September.

Uncertainty over host cities being ready for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil has prompted FIFA and local organizers to prepare match schedules for four to six venues.

FIFA said it will "adapt smoothly to the actual situation in due time, at the latest in mid-November."
