(AP) ? Here's what to watch for at the London Olympics on Monday:

___

1. SWIMMING: There are four finals, with Ryan Lochte going for a second gold in the men's 200 freestyle. The less successful Michael Phelps ? a phrase many are unaccustomed to hearing ? will also be in the pool elsewhere.

2. GYMNASTICS: The first gold medal will be awarded in the men's team final.

3. SMOOTH RUNNING: There were no indications of the commuting chaos many had expected in London on the first regular business day of the Olympics. Will it last?

4. EMPTY SEATS: Expect fewer now. Organizers are having no trouble offloading tickets that weren't sold by federations.

5. HER HORSE ON THE COURSE: The queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips, races her horse around a course featuring 28 fences, hedges and water jumps in London's oldest royal park.

Small business tax breaks?or not | Radio Vice Online

President Obama often speaks about the 18 or so tax breaks?for small business that have been passed under his watch.? So, when I saw an article about these tax breaks last week, it peeked my curiosity.? Businesses aren?t taking them.? Why?

Because they are so complex, it isn?t worth the time and effort.

Out of 1.78 million corporate tax returns in the U.S., only about 20,000 claimed any of the main business tax credits in the code, according to the IRS.

There is a tax break for energy efficient buildings.? But, it,

?often requires computer modeling?costing as much as $50,000.? That leaves business owners weighing whether the?[tax] credit?is worth the expense.

And then there is the Work Opportunity credit which was targeted at businesses that hire disadvantaged groups, such as those on food stamps or welfare.

It requires extensive paperwork for each worker for whom it is claimed and the paperwork can often take a year or more to process.

Recently, the IRS dispensed with the requirement that the forms for this credit be hand-signed!

Then we have the credit for small businesses providing health care coverage for their employees.? It,

?was claimed?by only about 173,000 employers, out of an eligible pool of between 1.4 million and four million businesses, according to the Government Accountability Office.? ?The calculation was ridiculous?, says Barbara Webber,?property manager for Presidential Estates in Quincy, Mass., an owner of apartment complexes?

And, Ms. Webber has an accounting background.

While many companies say it is too complicated to claim tax breaks, the ones who try can find themselves embroiled in complex disputes with the Internal Revenue Service.

I well understand that we need to make sure that only those entitled to the tax breaks receive them.? But enacting tax breaks that few small businesses can take unless they hire a fleet of accountants and lawyers is silly, unless Congress simply wants to say they enacted tax breaks for small business.

What good is a tax break if no one can figure it out, or, if they do, afford to spend the money it takes to get?it?

Get Healthy And Stay Healthy With These Tips | Health Walk to Fitness

The desire to get in shape is a struggle that many people have in common. It is hard to begin a routine of you have no idea what to do. You have to seek some assistance. The following article has a lot of great tips so you can start down the fitness path today.

Bend your wrists backward and leave it like that to help you when you complete bicep curls. Doing so gives your biceps a more intense workout, resulting in better, more timely results.

A great fitness tip for those people trying to get fit and build strength is lifting lighter weights at faster speeds. This causes your muscles to use more force than lifting heavier weights. To do this, lift weights that are 50% lighter that the max you can lift.

Try counting backwards. Start with the number of repetitions you wish to complete, and count towards zero from there. This causes your workouts to feel shorter because you are thinking in smaller amounts. You can really motivate yourself when you know exactly how many reps you have left.

It is possible to get stronger faster if you do more exercise in less time. That will work your muscles harder and improve your endurance too. For instance, if you do a 30 minute workout, attempt to shave three minutes off that time next time you do it.

Do donkey calf raises to help build calf muscles. These exercises effectively build your calf muscles. With a partner sitting on your back, simply raise your calves.

Getting Fit

If weight loss is your goal, get started! If getting fit is what you want, then do it! The only thing is that you must only undertake these missions if you are choosing to do it for yourself alone. Getting fit to please another person rarely works.

When starting a fitness program, make sure you take it slowly, initially. Focus on familiarizing yourself with breathing techniques and performing different exercises properly. This helps let you do things the correct way right from the start while also preventing any injuries from occurring.

Make sure you are keeping yourself properly hydrated when working out for a duration of more than 30 or 40 minutes. You should note that hydration begins 1 hour before you workout, so you need to start drinking prior to going out to the gym. Keep it up one hour after finishing as well.

Try lifting weights to assist you with your running. This is why some runners should consider lifting weights. It?s been verified in formal studies that lifting weights gives runners improved endurance, as well as increased speed, when compared to those who don?t lift.

Don?t worry if you can?t get an expensive gym workout. You can get your workout in with just a pair of tennis shoes. Try running or walking at the park and then do some steps on the benches there. Add some weights or resistance bands to enhance your workouts through increased resistance.

If you change up what you are doing, you will get the most out of your exercise routines. You can run around the block instead of using a treadmill. The body will experience different things when going up a hill or running on various terrains. By keeping variety in exercises, the body cannot get used to one particular exercise and weight loss will continue to improve.

If you find yourself slacking off with your fitness regimen, talk to your friends about joining you. Including a friend in your exercise plans helps by keeping you motivated and focused on your goals. This will help you to gain motivation when you are working out at the gym.

Pay for your workout sessions ahead of time to ensure that you will attend them. There is an increased chance via pressure that you will make it to each of your sessions due to the valuable dollar you?ve placed on the line.

Strength Training

Strength training is perfect for getting muscle mass and to reshape the body. Strength training increases your metabolism, and increased muscle mass burns more calories, even when you are resting. Try to get at least 24 hours of rest for each part of your body before you engage in physical activity again.

When you make up your mind to become physically fit, do not forget to have a check-up prior to getting fully involved in vigorous exercise. You doctor?s opinion is crucial as to whether or not you should complete these exercises regularly. Even those who are nearly fit can benefit from a consultation with a physician.

Keep an accurate daily log. Include all the exercises you do and everything you consume. Even write down the weather for the day. If you do this, it can help you as you consider the high and low points. When you can?t exercise on a day, be sure to record why not.

Keeping a record of your fitness in a diary could be beneficial to your routine. Record your workouts and make sure to add in the extra exercise you do throughout the day. You can tell how far you have walked in a day if you use a pedometer through the day. This diary will be a visual reminder of how far you have come.

Find some people who will be supportive of your goals. Work out with your existing friends, or create new friendships at the fitness center. Exercising with others can help keep all of you motivated. Find a few people that have goals similar to yours and work together to reach them.

Mix up your workout routine with a variety of exercises. This keeps your exercise regimen out of a rut, and you stay committed to exercising every day. Also, it?s important to switch exercises to get more muscle groups involved to get the maximum benefits from working out.

It?s a good idea to get at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise every day. This strengthens your cardiovascular system, resulting in better health, as well as stronger muscles and a lower body mass. Just remember that the longer you workout, the longer you are going to have to rest.

Use smaller machines first when you are handling weights. Begin your routine by using barbells and dumbbells first and working the smaller muscle groups. The progression should be gradual, from lighter to heavier until you are achieving the desired results.

Improve the health of your heart. If you carry extra weight around, your heart works extra hard. Exercising and fitness in general can help you lose weight and improve the health of your heart. However, keep in mind that you must eat healthier as well. Cut down calories through cutting down on saturated fats, eating produce, and eating plenty of fiber.

Apply what you?ve just learned if you?re ready to get fit. While you may not be able to go from zero to 60 in one week, every little bit helps. Soon you will find yourself more confident in your ability to change your life. Getting into great shape and staying that way is the best way to remain mentally and physically healthy.

Whenever you work out, be sure to exhale following each repetition of each weight. Your body will make use of its available energy, and you will be able to take in more air as a result.

Tunisia: Hardline Islam threatens democracy gains

(AP) ? Thousands of hardcore Muslims chant against Jews. Youths rampage through cities at night in protest of "blasphemous" art. A sit-in by religious students degenerates into fist fights and the desecration of Tunisia's flag.

In the birthplace of the Arab Spring, the transition from dictatorship to democracy has been mostly smoother than in neighboring countries, with no power-hungry military or armed militias to stifle the process. But as a moderate Islamist party rules with the help of secular forces, an unexpected threat has emerged: the increasing boldness of ultraconservative Muslims known loosely as Salafis, who want to turn this North African country of 10 million into a strict Islamic state.

Tunisia's hardcore Salafis are estimated to number only in the tens of thousands. But their organized and frequent protests against perceived insults to Islam, especially by artists, have rocked the country and succeeded in mobilizing disaffected and angry youth much more effectively than secular opposition parties.

Experts warn that an economic downturn could turn these spasms of religious-tinged rage into the new language of the opposition. Tunisia's economy shrank by 2 percent last year and unemployment stands at 18 percent ? even higher among young people.

"There's no question that unemployment aggravates the situation," said William Lawrence, the North Africa representative for the International Crisis Group think tank. "They go to Salafism because they have nowhere better to go socially, politically and spiritually."

As Salafis thrive in the new atmosphere of freedom of expression, they are aggressively attacking the free expression of those they see as insulting Islam. Their main target: artists who themselves have used democratic upheaval to raise sharp, often provocative, questions about the relationship between religion and society.

Tensions that were bottled during the regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali are bubbling to the surface.

A film called "Neither Allah nor Master" about secularism by an atheist director, an animated film portraying God as an old man that was broadcast on TV, and most recently an art exhibit dabbling in religious themes have all provoked the wrath of the Salafis.

The Spring of the Arts exhibit in the wealthy Tunis suburb of La Marsa triggered June riots that left one dead and 100 injured. Many of the paintings questioned religion's role in society, including some clearly skewering Salafis. There were images of veiled women hanging from punching bags in a boxing ring, veiled women buried in stones, and paintings of demonic bearded faces.

The Islamist-led government has tread carefully around Salafi demonstrations, conscious that they themselves were once victims of government oppression and fearful of further radicalizing the Salafis.

That has exposed the government to accusations by the liberal and leftist opposition that they are unable to preserve stability, or even worse ? complicity in the extremist violence.

For Tunisian authorities, grappling with the Salafis is made all the harder by the fact that they have not coalesced into an articulate, united movement but are rather comprised of different groups, some which may even be under manipulation of secular remnants of the old regime. That contrasts with Egypt, where Salafis have formed political parties and participate in politics.

Salafis did not pop out of nowhere in Tunisia after the revolution. The movement grew quietly under Ben Ali, who vigorously repressed the moderate Islamists of the now dominant Ennahda Party, heirs to Tunisia's own indigenous tradition of reformist Islam.

Under Ben Ali, imams were appointed by the state and religious schools closed. Many of those alienated by the official secular culture of the French-speaking elite turned to the strict Salafi Islam of the Arabian peninsula.

"They were influenced by the Salafi discourse coming out of the Gulf countries and diffused by the Salafi satellite channels all through the 1990s," explained Slaheddine Jourchi, a Tunisian writer and human rights activist who has closely studied Islamist movements. "They saw the Salafi discourse as the most pure in Islam."

With the fall of the dictatorship, Salafis are now free to spread their message to the rest of the country.

One of the biggest flashpoints was Manouba University near the capital where conservative students and their allies staged a months-long sit-in protesting restrictions on the Islamic veil and lack of prayer halls on campus. They fought with secular students and in one case tore down the national flag and replaced it with a black one bearing the Islamic profession of faith.

"Our movement benefits from the new climate of freedom to get out its message and preach to people," said Bilal Chaouachi, a bearded theology student who describes himself as a follower of Salafi Islam and gives religion classes in his local mosque.

Redha Belhaj, head of the recently legalized Hizb al-Tahrir, or Liberation Party, which calls for the restoration of the Islamic Caliphate, said that Ennahda betrayed the country when it declined to enshrine Islamic law as the basis of all legislation in the new constitution.

Speaking from his modest offices at the edge of Tunis' medina, Belhaj claimed that Tunisians long for an Islamic state.

"People want Islam as a solution, they want Shariah as a system and a regime," he said. "Ennahda deceived public opinion."

Belhaj does distance himself from the riots, such those in June, emphasizing that his party rejects violence of any kind. "They are all young and without education and lack understanding," he said of the rioters, hinting that these youths were being manipulated into violence to make Islamists look bad.

For Tunisia's secular-minded elite, the Salafis represent everything they fear with the fall of the dictatorship and the rise of Islamist politics.

A rally in May by the group Ansar al-Shariah, or the followers of Islamic law, led by a veteran of the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan, alarmed many Tunisians. Some 4,000 Salafis gathered outside the revered main mosque in the city of Kairouan to voice calls for an Islamic state, chanting about conquering the Jews and cheering speeches calling for an Islamic state.

Especially popular were four masked men performing martial arts moves known as Zamaqtel, a kind of Islamic kung fu. The discipline's founder, Mohammed Moncef Ouerghi, developed the martial art during 16 years in Ben Ali's prisons. While happy to be out of prison and enjoying the new freedoms, he was dismissive of Tunisia's embrace of democracy: "Democracy was conceived of by humans, not Muslims, before the time of the Prophet Muhammad ? if democracy is important, why is it not in the Quran?"

In many cases, people joining Salafi demonstrations may have been motivated less by piety than by a chance to loot or express dissatisfaction over a lack of jobs for young people. Some of the June rioters broke into shops and attacked courthouses and police stations.

The Interior Ministry has also alleged that some of the rioters were being paid by wealthy businessmen loyal to the old regime.

The La Marsa art exhibit violence appears to have been provoked by a former member of Ben Ali's political party who had a grudge against the gallery unrelated to the exhibit. He snapped pictures of some of the more provocative paintings and showed them at a nearby mosque. He also uploaded them onto a Facebook page ? along with some paintings that weren't even in the exhibit ? with captions condemning them as blasphemous.

Sami Brahim, an expert on Islamist movements in Tunisia who runs a cultural center right near the art gallery in La Marsa, expects the whole Salafi movement to subside with time because it is a cultural import funded by the Gulf states.

Since the movement was nurtured under the oppression of Ben Ali, he said, it should eventually wither in the face of greater freedom of expression and debate.

"Salafism doesn't yet have the courage to take part in politics since from the beginning it hasn't been an organized movement and it doesn't have a very well elaborated discourse," said Brahim. "It would just need a healthy atmosphere, real freedoms and a relatively successful economy for the Tunisian Salafi movement to be marginalized."

Report: US presents Israel with Iran strike plan

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli newspaper reported Sunday that the Obama administration's top security official has briefed Israel on U.S. plans for a possible attack on Iran, seeking to reassure it that Washington is prepared to act militarily should diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear enrichment program.

A senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential talks, said the article in the Haaretz daily was incorrect.

Haaretz said National Security Adviser Tom Donilon laid out the plans before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a dinner at a visit to Israel earlier this month. It cited an unidentified senior American official as the source of its report, which came out as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was telling Israel he would back an Israeli military strike against Iran.

The American official also said Donilon shared information on U.S. weapons that could be used for such an attack, and on the U.S. military's ability to reach Iranian nuclear facilities buried deep underground, the newspaper said. It cited another U.S. official involved in the talks with Israel as concluding that "the time for a military operation against Iran has not yet come."

The Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential meeting, said, "Nothing in the article is correct. Donilon did not meet the prime minister for dinner, he did not meet him one-on-one, nor did he present operational plans to attack Iran." He had no information when asked if Donilon had discussed any kind of attack plans with any Israeli official. Haaretz said another Israeli official attended for part of the meeting.

The U.S. Embassy had no immediate comment. Haaretz cited Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, as declining to comment on the confidential discussion between Netanyahu and Donilon. The White House also declined comment.

Both Israel and the U.S. think Iran's ultimate aim is to develop weapons technology, and not just produce energy and medical isotopes as Tehran claims. U.S. officials are concerned that Israel might attack Iranian nuclear facilities prematurely, and have been trying to convince Israeli leaders they can depend on Washington to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly said they would not contract out their country's security to another nation.

In Jerusalem on Sunday, a top Romney foreign policy adviser told reporters, "If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability (to build a nuclear weapon), the governor would respect that decision." Romney also thinks the option of a U.S. attack should also be on the table.

Building A Great Team Culture - Saxon, Secord, Thaney ...

?

It seems that the challenge of building a team has been with us forever.

People are the essential ingredient in all businesses however many business owners struggle to harness and develop the huge opportunity that a motivated and committed team of people can bring to a business.

Building a team means first creating a culture that allows for teamwork. It requires engineering your firm in a particular way.

So what are the essential steps in beginning to form a team culture at your firm?

Firstly, you will need to start at the beginning by reaffirming your business vision with your team.

Affirming the vision is about two things: showing your team what direction the firm is headed in, and getting their buy-in for this direction. You can?t expect people to support each other in what they are doing if they don?t agree with where the business is headed or, worse, don?t even know where it?s supposed to be headed.

Get their ideas on what type of culture they think currently exists; you may be surprised at the gap between your perception and theirs. You?ll need to know this so you can take steps to narrow any identified gap.

?

?One of the strongest motivators for team behavior is recognition.?

?

Another important part of building a winning team is to encourage participation by the team members in some of the business decision-making processes. The most common way of achieving this is by way of a team meeting.

When you start your team meetings there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. It is important to encourage as much team participation as possible

2. Some concrete work must get done, or some firm decisions made. Otherwise they?ll just be seen as cosmetic time wasters.

Clearly communicate the message that teamwork and collaboration are expected from everyone.

Celebrate team successes publicly. Reward and recognize teamwork. Make some aspect of compensation such as bonuses depend on collaborative practices. Every achievement that indicates a win for a team member or the firm should be publicly recognized in some way.

Just like anything you want to do well, creating an effective team culture is something you must work at every single day. Team building cannot be a fad of the week.

Japan's low-profile military steps up during flood rescue (+video)

Japan's army has taken over flood rescue and cleanup operations, drawing more positive reactions from Japanese formerly wary of praising the military.

By Gavin Blair,?Correspondent / July 16, 2012

Japan's Self-Defense Force soldiers searched for missing people at an area devastated by heavy rains at Ichinomiya-machi town in Aso, Kumamoto prefecture Sunday.

Japan?s once low-profile Self-Defense Forces (SDF), or military, has been at the forefront of the rescue operation after record rainfalls caused flooding that has left some 25 dead and seven more missing. These latest rescue efforts, combined with the SDF's response to last year's devastating earthquake and tsunami, are shining a more?positive light on Japan?s military than it has seen in decades.

The worst-affected areas of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan?s four main islands, saw as much as 32 inches of rain in what has been named the ?North Kyushu Floods.? One mountainous area of Fukuoka Prefecture is still being airlifted supplies by the SDF, while thousands more remain in evacuation centers or without power. Up to 400,000 people were ordered or advised to leave their homes in Kyushu at the height of the storms over the weekend.

Images of torrents of water sweeping away houses and cars recalled memories of last March?s tsunami that took the lives of nearly 20,000 on the northeast coast of Japan?s main island. And as they did after that disaster, the SDF has been rescuing those stranded by the recent raging waters, searching for the missing, and clearing roads, drawing more positive reactions from a citizenry and media formerly wary of praising the military. ?

According to the protocols of Japan?s pacifist Constitution, effectively imposed on the defeated country by the United States after World War II, the SDF had to be officially invited by local authorities to aid in rescue efforts.

After the Kobe earthquake that killed nearly 6,500 people in 1995, it took four days for the SDF to be sent in ? attracting widespread criticism and handing Japan's yakuza mafia a publicity coup by allowing them to be seen delivering food and supplies before the national government.

However, after the March tsunami, then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan quickly dispatched 100,000 troops to the disaster areas. Footage of the SDF?s rescue efforts provided a huge boost to its standing, as well as driving a surge in young people signing up for Japan?s armed forces.

Japan?s relationship with its men and women in uniform has been an uneasy one since the end of the war, and any reminders of the country?s militaristic past are generally avoided whenever possible. The SDF?s recent humanitarian work following natural disasters has gone some way toward breaking that taboo.

The SDF may have another opportunity to gain more kudos before the week is out. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, typhoon No. 7, a powerful tropical storm, is currently making its way across the Pacific and is predicted to hit Kyushu on Wednesday. ??

Is there a chance for a crosscultural relationship at a young age ...

?Is there a chance for a crosscultural relationship at a young age?

Is there a chance for a crosscultural relationship at a young age?

Posted on July 26, 2012 by Krystyna in Questions - Answers

Pryvit Krystyna,

My name is Andy, I?m from America. Thank you so much for this blog which I?ve spent hours on, trying to help my life. Here is my story and some questions.

Really, I?m in the very very early stage of a relationship. I started a summer job at my city?s zoo, and 1 week later three beautiful college girls my own age arrived in a university program from Ukraine. I?ve now been flirting and dating with one, Inna, and by extension have become friends with all three.

You are so right about Ukrainian girls? intimacy, as compared to American girls! She will act all day crazy about me, physically, but at night it takes much more patience, as a man, than with some American girls. Which is fine for me, it is more rewarding. We both laughed because, she and her friends hate seeing the way Americans dance in the club, they find grinding to be disgusting. But my girl is very happy to French kiss/ make out in public, to which I and many Americans prefer more privacy. This is a point we both laugh at each other?s culture difference.

But overall, I feel like we?re crazy about each other. We see each other almost daily at work, but also usually 3 times a week now outside of work. I love showing her my city. She?s a type that loves the nightlife, even in Ukraine I can tell.

Is there a chance for a crosscultural relationship at a young age?

We?ve written notes and texts about where this may be going. We both do not label ourselves as boyfriend and girlfriend, but have said that if we were born in the same country, we would be. Overall, we feel she probably must go back after summer. She said that, before leaving, she thought she might extend her trip here for one of two reasons: To take college classes here, or for a romance. I have encouraged her, in person, to do what she feels, of course. But I would be lying if I say to you, I don?t care if she leaves.

Now that you know my story, Krystyna, would it be proper of me to encourage her to stay here longer? If I only suggest to her, to sign up for some classes at college, and see how we feel about each other after 4 more months? Or is that a rude thing for me to suggest?

She has even said why don?t I go to her country, to which I said I know none of her language and would take some time. (But guess what she doesn?t know, I?ve downloaded a beginner?s Ukrainian course.) I would be open to visiting her home. But obviously the thought of either of us moving, scares the hell out of both of us. And we both come from middle-low income homes and don?t have a lot of money to visit back and forth. Sometimes I feel like this is doomed already. We both say out loud, that we should be smart and enjoy this only for summer. But then why do I take the time already to learn some Ukrainian? What do you think? Does our relationship have any future? Have you heard any stories of a young couple like us, and if so how did they end, even if it?s not really the ending I?d like to hear. Any input you have will help even more than your amazing website already does! And I?ll be happy to answer any questions as well, if you have any.

Thank you so much,
Andy.

Krystyna

Hello Andy!

First, I would like to say thank you very much to you for your nice words about my blog!!!! Is there a chance for a crosscultural relationship at a young age?
Your words really motivate me to develop my site further and write many interesting articles about traditions and dating in Ukraine.
It is really important to me to get feedback from my readers!!!!

Now to your question:

Living in Germany, I was exposed to a variety of cultures. And I have observed how young people from Germany have developed friendships and relationships with students from a wide variety of back grounds and regions. Being an Intercultural Studies Master, I was especially aware of the effect culture had on the students around me.

One of the most interesting facets of intercultural relationships to me (I can mention that from my personal experience, I have? a relationship with a German man) was the romantic relationship. It is very excitied ti flirt with the person from another culture ? something new, romantic and special! For some of my friends, flirting led to dating. Some of those dating grew quite serious in their relationship. And then summer came.

I would say that many college students in relationships find themselves and their love for another stretched particularly during summer months. Usually distance, new schedules, and different living situations affect this. But for international students? relationships, distance is often extreme, and different schedules and living situations are only a small part of vast cultural differences. This causes those in such relationships or observing them to question if young college students are ready for this.

Because college is a time in which people experience changes in their identity and understanding of the world. This makes college a great time for experiencing, learning about, and engaging with different cultures, even through a relationship. At the same time, this puts enormous strain on intercultural relationships. That students are not financially stable (especially enough for long-distance travel) further strains the relationship. However, with much patience and strong commitment, intercultural relationships born in college can have a happy ending, but often the relationship comes under great strain and challenge.

I hope I could help you!

I wish you a lot of luck in your Ukrainian dating adventure!

For Online Security, Invest in People

This year's Black Hat online security conference, held in Las Vegas, saw the return of a number of the speakers who showed up at the very first one. And while the best security practices might have changed some since that first conference was held in 1997, one thing has not changed: your best security investment lies with hiring the right people.

The point came up at a session that featured five of the professionals who spoke at the original Black Hat conference. While the main topic of the discussion was security over the next 15 years, it's natural that the speakers should consider where businesses might best spend their money. On this, all five were unanimous: invest in people, not gadgets.

Black Hat founder Jeff Moss insisted that ?The best return is on your employees...I rely on people, not on a widget. I can get all the widgets I need for free from the great open source community.?

One vital issue they raised was that it's not just a matter of hiring good security staff. Businesses also need to hire good people managers. Such managers understand how to get the best out of those they manage and how to put the right person in the right role. Marcus Ranum, another Black Hat speaker who also spoke at the very first BH conference, agreed with this point. Companies can use forensics and malware specialists, of course, but they also need generalists capable of seeing the bigger picture.

To illustrate this point, Ranum pointed out that most businesses these days don't run their own payroll system. Instead, they hire a payroll service to do it for them. In the old days, when companies did run their own payroll system, they needed specialists to handle that system. Now, however, what they need is a generalist who can understand how any service (including payroll) will interact with software on the business's premises.

For more on this topic, you can check out the story here. ?

Marilee, a client of mine, was commitment phobic. "I?d love to be in a loving relationship," she told me in one of our counseling sessions, "but I?m not willing to give up my freedom. I have a great life. I love my work and my friends. I love to travel and take workshops and classes. I don?t want anyone telling me what I can or can?t do. I don?t want to deal with someone feeling hurt because I want to work rather than be with him. It?s just not worth all the hassle."

Marcus, another of my clients, was also commitment phobic. "When I?m not in a relationship, that?s all I can think about it. I really want someone to play with, to love and to grow with. But soon after getting into a relationship, I start to feel trapped. I feel like I can?t do what I want to do and I start to resent the person for limiting me. Most of the time, she has no idea what?s going on and is stunned by the break-up. She thought everything was fine. After leaving her, I?m back to square one ?wanting to be in a relationship. This has happened over and over again."

Commitment phobia has its roots in the belief that when we love someone, we are responsible for their feelings rather than for our own. Once we believe that we are responsible for another?s feelings of hurt or rejection as a result of our behavior, we believe we need to limit ourselves in order to not upset the other person. Then, instead of standing up for our own freedom and right to pursue that which brings us joy, we limit our freedom in an effort to have control over mbt moto boots the other person?s feelings. This will always eventually lead to resentment.

"Marilee, " I asked in one of our phone sessions, "What if you picked someone who also loved his work and his personal freedom?"

"Frankly, I can?t imagine that. Every man I?ve been in a relationship with has wanted to spend more time with me than I have with him. Am I just picking the wrong man over and over?"

"No," I replied. "But you are not standing firm in your freedom from the beginning. You give a lot at the beginning because you enjoy being with him, but, as we?ve discussed, you also give yourself up a lot at the beginning. You make love when you don?t want to. You stay up later than you want to for fear of hurting him. Then, when you do start to tell the truth, he is surprised and hurt. Until you are willing to risk losing him from the beginning rather than lose yourself, you will continue to create relationships that limit your freedom. You end up believing that it is the relationship that limits you, but it is your own fears and beliefs that keep limiting you."

In my sessions with Marcus, he discovered that he had no idea how to stand up for himself in a relationship. As soon as a woman wanted something from him, he gave it to her. He just could not bring himself to say no. Then, of course, he ended up feeling trapped.

Marcus discovered that his fear of saying no to a woman came from two sources:

The Iraq war is a conflict between the United States of America and Iraq. In the year 2003, during the month of March, the United States army invaded Iraq. The main reason and cause for the Iraq war was Iraq development of weapons of mass destruction. The Iraqis supposedly were working on developing nuclear weapons, which was creating a threat to the security of the United States of America.

It was during the year 2003 that the president of the United States of America thought that waiting longer could create a nuisance and hence the invasion was planned .

The main cause of the war in Iraq was the information that the US got regarding the development of the weapon of mass destruction in Iraq. However, contrary to the information, the Iraq was not found to hold any such weapons.

There are a number of claims made by the US intelligence and its officials that say that the United states invasion of Iraq was due to the contacts that the US though, Saddam Hussein had with Al Quadi, which is a major terrorist activity group. Other officials said that under Saddam rule human rights were not respected in Iraq. All mbt moja these claims were put up by the US Officials to support the war between Iraq and the United States of America.

Moreover, Iraq was limiting oil it supplied to other countries from being used in the military services.

The fact that Iraq was going to start an Oil Bourse excluding the US dollar did not help any.

As far as the claims are concerned, none of the claims were true. It is interesting to know that on 20 March 2003 the US army along with the army officials of UK and some other allies invaded the Iraq. The invasion was made to get rid of Saddam Hussein rule in Iraq. The US army and the armies of the other allies of US were successful in defeating the army lead by Saddam Hussein in a very short span of time. Iraq was occupied and conquered by the US army, and for a short time, a small coalition government was found to have the situation under control. However, the coalition government was unable to maintain order. This led the Iraqi Insurgents to take up war with the US.

Most of the members of the coalition government decided to withdraw from the government and this led to failure. There are scant details of the causes leading to the invasion, and there are a large number of discrepancies and uncertainty related to this topic. Moreover, the consequences are also not clearly visible and still remain a mystery.

There are no official reports or statements that the US could provide to support the war, and its invasion in Iraq. This war has made a large number of people suffer, as there were a number of causalities have been reported in Iraq, as well as the United States military.

There's No Such Thing as ?Good? Writing ? The Active Voice

I mean this very literally, and it?s something I tell my students all the time: there?s no such thing as ?good? writing. Sometimes they?ll nod and say something like, ?Yeah, it?s all subjective. Every person likes different stuff and interprets things differently.? But that?s not what I mean. Writing does have quality norms, and those norms matter. A lot. But norms are not the same as ?good? and ?bad? as essential labels.

Here?s what I mean. We all know what I?m talking about when I say ?writing,? but it?s actually not all that practical to think of writing as a single thing. In actuality, writing is contextual, situational ? it?s?writings, plural. Business writing is quite different from literary writing, which is quite different from a cell-phone text, which is quite different from journalism, which is quite different from scientific writing, which is quite different from ad copy. A piece of writing that?s labeled ?good? in one of these areas might be considered ?bad? if it gets uprooted and plopped down in another. This specificity explains why it can be so difficult to transition from one kind of writing to another: writers internalize the norms of the kind of writing they usually do and then bring those norms with them to new situations in which they may not work so well.

Sure, you may say, the big things may differ, but the same basic mechanical rules apply across the board.

That?s reasonably (though not entirely) true, but mechanics are not the most important stuff when it comes to writerly success: if the mechanics of a piece of writing are a mess, it?s not going to be readable, but a piece of writing can be mechanically clean and still suck. In short, reasonably solid mechanics are essential for a high-quality piece of writing, but they?re not what make a piece of writing high-quality. The more global features are what do that, and global features are highly contextual.

Why does all this matter? Pragmatically speaking, it matters when you try to write in a new discipline or genre. If you import norms from your old genre, you might get burned, so make sure you analyze your target genre and pick up any important differences. Also, it means new kinds of writing come with learning curves, so you shouldn?t feel bad if it takes a while to get into the swing of things. Philosophically speaking, it?s nice to recognize that talking about writing as ?good? and ?bad? (which we all do) is merely a shorthand for what you really mean: ?good? writing is writing that satisfies or exceeds the needs or expectations of the target audience within its genre or discipline, and ?bad? writing is writing that fails to do that.

So, what does it mean to be ?a really good writer?? In my book, a really good writer is someone who can identify and adjust to the norms ?and expectations of different kinds of writing. That means the essential characteristics of a ?really good writer? are perception and flexibility.

The Man Jonah Who Was Swallowed Whole By ... - News and Society

Jonah had been informed by God to go and evangelise in Nineveh, a great Gentile city upon which God was going to pour out His judgment. He wanted Jonah to preach to them in the hope that they would repent of their sin and thus judgment could be averted. But Jonah would have none of it; he was a zealous and patriotic Jew and he had no desire to risking his life by preaching a message of judgment in a city he would never otherwise have gone to, as a non secular and bigoted Jew. He definitely refused and instantly plotted to run away from God and go in the very opposite direction. Rather than going east he went down to the port of Joppa and found, awfully expediently, a ship going to Tarshish. He wasted no time and having paid the fare for the crossing, he boarded the vessel, found a cushty place and lay down to sleep. As far as he was concerned , everything was going his way and he dismissed all thought of his insubordination from his mind.

Delicately the ship pulled away from the docks and Jonah felt good. He was completely relaxed as he thought about the ease with which he managed to find a ship going in this direction and carrying him far from his responsibility to God. The sea was calm and the wind favourable and he was making great progress. That was till God decided to remind Jonah that he could never run away from him and God sent a frightening typhoon which tossed the merchant ship to and fro like it was a cork.

The seasoned mariner who were in charge of the ship were scared and started to do all they could to revive some sense of normality but all their attempts were annoyed. They cast some of the wares overboard and called upon all of their experience to restore calm. Things just went from bad to much worse and so they decided to call on their gods. Still things grew worse and eventually they found Jonah sleeping deeply in the lower parts of the boat. They woke him and asked his help. As they cried in their distress they made a decision that there has to be an aberrant reason for the hurricane and so they cast lots to identify the culprit. Jonah was identified and they asked him why this was so. He told them everything and informed them that the only real way calm may be restored was by throwing him overboard.

That, to the sailors, was tantamount to murder or murder; they refused to do what Jonah advised and redoubled their attempts to bring the ship to its destination. At last they realised they were getting nowhere and reluctantly they threw Jonah overboard and observed him disappear under the waves. Instantly there had been a great calm.

Unknown to the sailors God had a ?great fish?; doubtless a whale, waiting nearby and it swallowed Jonah . After 3 days, a totally damaged and repentant Jonah was barfed out onto dry land and when God told him, the second time, to go to Nineveh, he agreed, even though reluctantly, and set off for Nineveh.

How frequently we have heard the story of Jonah and were excited by the account. See what Eikon Bible Art has produced relating to Jonah and the whale here!

Malaysian giant MOL enters Australia's online gaming space with ...

The real-action, online gaming is the fastest-growing segment of the market. In fact, by 2014, online games will itself be a billion-dollar market, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers? projection.

So, it?s not a huge surprise to see some M&A action in this space as companies jostle for market share.

Recently, Ocash, the Australian startup, acquired OnlineGamez Australia, a distributor of online game credits in Australia and New Zealand. This week,?Malaysian Internet payments giant MOL Global announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Ocash itself.

?This is a significant step for MOL to continue to build and strengthen its business strategy across the Asia Pacific region,? said Craig White, president of MOL Global.

White said the partnership would ?provide more business opportunities for our region?s game developers and publishers as they will be able to extend their reach via MOL to consumers outside the Asian region.?

MOL is one of the largest online payment providers in the world. It has more than 600,000 physical and online payment channels, besides partnerships with over 150 online game publishers and social networks worldwide including Facebook, Zynga and Electronic Arts.

Ocash founder Budi Handoko has been named the chief executive of MOL Australia, and will power the company?s growth Down Under.

?We identify ourselves in line with the vision of MOL and the synergy between both organisations will allow our businesses to reach new heights,? said Handoko, an online game specialist. ?At the same time, our growing player community will be able to gain new secured channels to purchase various popular digital products such as Facebook Credits, as well as be introduced to MOL?s huge portal of international and Asian games.?

Ocash has specialised in processing payments for online games credits in the Australia and New Zealand markets. Its flagship product ? ocash points ? is a virtual credit utilised by online game enthusiasts to purchase popular game credits from various game publishers.

PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts consumer spending on games in Australia will increase to $1,584 million in 2014, mainly on the strength of growth in online games and wireless games. Estimated compound annual growth in consumer spending for online games (13.6%) and wireless games (13%) for 2010-2014 is significantly higher than that for consoles and handheld devices (5.8%).

Does online marketing seem daunting, complex and frustrating? It really shouldn?t.
