Chris Cooper Joins The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Norman Osborn New Avengers

In an era where many of the biggest blockbusters are based on comic book characters,?The Amazing Spider-Man series differentiates itself with inspired casting choices and strong onscreen character relationships. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone,?Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary,?Martin Sheen and Sally Field made the Marc Webb?s first 3D adventure work despite plot holes and narrative issues, and the sequel has already turned heads with its casting additions.

Director Marc Webb and Columbia Pictures are continuing to bolster their talent show that is?The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a film that already added Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Felicity Jones, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, with another smart casting addition, this time adding another Oscar winner in a key franchise role.

THR has the scoop that Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper (The Muppets, The Town) has signed with Sony Pictures to play Norman Osborn, a role played by Willem Dafoe in Sam Raimi?s first?Spider-Man feature film.

Don?t expect a Green Goblin?appearance?anytime soon, however. Sony and director Marc Webb have been smart to avoid retreading villains in the quickly rebooted series, with? The Amazing Spider-Man utilizing The Lizard and the sequel introducing Electro and Rhino, potentially setting up or teasing Venom. Venom is a character Sony wants to branch off into a separate franchise. That?s why he was forcefully introduced in Raimi?s?Spider-Man 3, why?James Vanderbilt co-wrote the reboot (he also wrote the Venom script)?and why it?s been hinted and rumor that Dane DeHaan?s Harry Osborn could become Venom.

Cooper has trained for this role ? see for yourself:

The Muppets - Chris Cooper

Cooper represents another brilliant addition to the franchise, as a proven character actor fans can rally behind. He can play a lovable force for good, a sly villain or someone shadily in between. While contract details are?unavailable, Cooper may have a multi-picture contract due to the importance of Oscorp in the franchise. We know from chatting with the developers of The Amazing Spider-Man game that in the reboot franchise biology is the focus and much (all?) of that comes from the science experiments conducted at Oscorp.

How that plays into the origins of Electro and Rhino, let alone the new and inevitable Venom, remains to be seen. We?re also curious how the story of Peter Parker?s parents and their history with Norman Osborn plays out. Marc Webb in responding to a question about the Sinister Six potential team-up of villains in The Amazing Spider-Man trilogy:

?There is a silhouette as Peter enters Oscorp on a display, which reads our founder, Norman Osborn. And there is a back-story which I will not reveal. We wanted to convey that there were more forces at work than you may have initially thought. That?s all I can say about that.?

Excited? Let me know on Twitter @rob_keyes?your thoughts on the new Osborn!

Fun fact: In Marvel Comics, Norman Osborn wears the Iron Patriot armor and not Rhodey (Don Cheadle) who will wear it in Iron Man 3.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2?releases May 2, 2014.

Patchy Irish data dampen Barroso's sunnier outlook

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish retail sales fell for the third month in a row and house prices pointed to an uneven and slow recovery, dampening hopes expressed by the European Commission's President on Thursday that Ireland's economy is turning a corner.

Data released on Wednesday showed the jobless rate fell to 14.2 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, a more than two-year low, in a boost to hopes that Ireland's struggling domestic economy may soon begin to recover.

That prompted European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso, on a visit to Dublin, to say bailed-out Ireland was showing that the tough fiscal policies advocated by the European Union, but rejected by Italian voters this week, were working.

"Confidence is returning to Ireland and Europe, the Irish economy is turning the corner. The employment data just published suggest clearly that this could be happening," Barroso told a conference of company chief executives.

"It shows that the (bailout) programmes can work. It shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel."

While Ireland's economy returned to growth in 2011 and probably grew again last year, albeit at a slower pace, it has been driven by exports as the domestic side of the economy struggles due to high unemployment and relentless austerity.

A 1.7 percent month-on-month dip in retail sales in January, following a smaller fall in December which dashed retailers hopes that busier Christmas sales would spur activity, showed how cautious consumers remain in Ireland.

Irish house prices fell for the second successive month in January, dropping 0.6 percent month-on-month, and tempering hopes of a rebound after 50 percent peak-to-trough falls.

However prices in the capital Dublin, where much of the recent increase in purchases has been focused, rose 0.5 percent on the month and turned positive on annual basis for the first time since 2007 - indicative, analysts said, of the patchy nature of the stabilisation in the domestic economy.

"The general tone of the data over the last couple of days suggests an uneven and extended process of bottoming out in domestic activity," said Austin Hughes, chief economist at KBC Bank Ireland.

"The numbers for the past couple of days are telling you Ireland is in a different place to Spain and Italy, but it's not leaping forward. Even in success stories austerity has a cost in terms of the level of economic activity and spending power."

Estate Planning When It's Just the Two of You | Ellwood City News

Planning for the future can take a different shape when children aren?t involved. With no braces to pay for or tuition bills to finance, couples don?t have many of the financial obligations that require resources and can impact an estate. On the other hand, these couples must plan for a future that will not include adult children to give them a helping hand ? physically, emotionally or financially ? as they age.

Estate planning is important regardless of your parental status. A well-crafted estate plan assigns decision makers, designates heirs and specifies who gets what after you and your partner pass away. It allows couples to create contingencies for individual survivorship and can help minimize taxes. It also can help ensure your mutual wishes are respected as health or cognitive abilities decline.

Assign decision makers. Couples without children can each execute a power of attorney naming their spouse to act on their behalf. Each can also designate an alternate attorney-in-fact to act on your behalf in the event you both become unable to make decisions regarding your finances and property. This person may also be assigned the responsibility of executor of your estate1. If you have no children to name, you might consider asking a trusted family member or friend (generally someone younger) or a professional in the estate planning business to take on these responsibilities.

A living will?also called an advance healthcare directive?is another important legal document both of you should have on file. It specifies your wishes in the event of an incapacitating illness and enables your assigned designee to make decisions about your health care on your behalf.

Decide how your assets will be distributed. An attorney can help you draw up a will that specifies how and to whom your assets will be distributed when one or both of you pass away. Without a will in place, your estate will be handled according to the statutes of the state in which you reside. Often, when there are no children or designated heirs identified in a last will and testament, the surviving spouse is the primary heir, then other living relatives, which could include parents and/or grandparents, siblings and siblings? children. If this is what you intend, you can make that clear in your will; if not, determine how you want to split your assets among your relatives, loved ones and causes that are important to you.

Your estate plan can include strategies for giving financial gifts before or after your death. Under current federal tax law for 2013, an individual may gift up to $14,000 per person to as many people as he or she would like without gift tax consequences. You can also pay college tuition for anyone without being subject to gift taxes or using any of your annual or lifetime gift tax exclusions, as long as you pay the institution directly.

Create avenues for charitable giving. If you don?t plan to leave a significant amount of your assets to family, you may choose to give charitably to causes you?re passionate about. There are other ways to be generous in a tax-efficient way while you and your partner are both are still living. You can donate to a donor-advised fund and receive tax benefits upfront, while suggesting how the funds should be invested and later distributed to your chosen nonprofit organization. With a charitable lead trust, the charity receives payments for a period of time after which you or your heirs receive any remaining assets in the trust. A charitable remainder trust operates in the reverse, giving you or your heirs a stream of payments for a period of time (not exceeding 20 years) or for life, and leaving any remaining amount to the selected charity.

Plan for the unexpected. Your estate plan should include adequate insurance coverage for unexpected events. Be sure to name the appropriate beneficiaries, including one another, on your respective policies. Since moving in with a child isn?t an option, you may wish to purchase long-term care insurance policies that help cover assisted living services or nursing home care as needed later in life.

Consult the experts to create a comprehensive estate plan.

A financial advisor can help you and your spouse or partner make plans for the handling of your estate. In conjunction with legal and tax advisors who understand state and federal tax and estate planning laws, you can take steps to ensure you both have sufficient means to live well after the other passes and that your mutual wishes are respected regarding the legacy you leave.

CSN: Brady's deal will help Patriots reload

That Tom Brady and the Patriots worked out an extension through 2017 isn?t a stunner.
?
He was due to consume about 18 percent of the Patriots salary cap in the final two years of his old deal ($21.8 million against a cap which hovers around $123 million).
?
What is eye-opening is that Brady is ? according to the early contract numbers provided by SI and NBC?s Peter King ? playing for about $9 million a year in the three seasons that were added to his deal.
?
That?s less than half what he could command in salary if he were a free agent now, never mind what he may have been able to command if he?d become a free agent in March of 2015.
?
Brady is providing immediate cap relief to the Patriots to help them shop what they expect to be a flooded free agent market beginning March 12. And he allows flexibility down the road as well when Brady is into his football dotage as the consummate Patriot looks at 40.
?
Which dominoes can we expect to fall next? First up would probably be an extension for Wes Welker who ? since 2007 ? has made about $27 million while becoming the most prolific receiving target in football.
?
Since Brady described Welker as the best teammate he?s ever had this past season, it?s logical to presume that Brady is hoping the Patriots funnel some of the savings he provided to getting Welker money that can give Welker some certainty as he enters the twilight of his career.
?
When Welker signed his franchise tender last summer, he described the move as a leap of faith. If a contract extension for Welker follows ? and the chances of that are currently good, according to a well-placed source ? Brady may have provided the soft landing for Welker?s leap.
?
In conversations with Brady this past season, he spoke often of the game-changing ability of corner Aqib Talib and Talib?s unmistakable impact on the team when he was part of the defense.
?
Talib is also a soon-to-be free agent.
?
Brady has never presumed to wear a management hat with the Patriots. And, while it?s possible his renegotiation came with specific requests for players to be re-signed, it?s unlikely given past history that he?d offer ultimatums.
?
Suffice to say, though, he?ll closely watch where the money he?s saving the Patriots is going.
?
Currently, the team is weak at wide receiver and strong like ox at tight end. The expensive Chad Ochocinco signing was a bust. The less expensive Brandon Lloyd signing worked out better but Lloyd hasn?t distinguished himself as a game changer, merely a complementary piece.
?
With the money New England?s saved, they may be able to enter into talks for a player like Steelers wideout Mike Wallace as he hits the free agent market.
?
We?ll find out when the contract specifics are all laid out exactly how much the Patriots saved with Brady?s re-do. And whether Brady actually plays for $9 million a year from 2014 through 2017 remains to be seen. He may renegotiate again to a salary more reflective of his value. But for now, Brady?s renegotiation has given this team which has been to two Super Bowls and two AFC Championships since it won its last Lombardi the wherewithal to shop for players that will make them Super Bowl contenders clean through until Brady hits 40.

Study revises colorectal cancer risk down and other cancer risks up ...

Lynch Syndrome is a heritable genetic mutation that causes colorectal, endometrial and other cancers. A cooperative study that included the University of Colorado Cancer Center, published in this month's issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, revises the risk of colorectal cancer down but other cancers up for women with Lynch Syndrome who have had endometrial cancer.

"This new information helps patient care in two important ways. First, it helps us counsel women with Lynch Syndrome who have had endometrial cancer about the magnitude of their future cancer risk, which turns out to be about 55 percent over the 20 years after diagnosis of their endometrial cancer. Second, it helps fill in the picture of the spectrum of cancers that are associated with Lynch Syndrome, which includes not only colorectal and endometrial cancers, but kidney, ureter, renal, pelvic, urinary, bladder and breast cancers in that order as well," says Dennis J. Ahnen, MD, CU Cancer Center investigator and professor of gastroenterology at the Denver VA Medical Center, one of the paper's co-authors.

The research group, which includes member from six centers, used data from 127 women included in the Colon Cancer Family Registry (CCFR). Ahnen notes that the CCFR is unique among cancer registries in that it not only collects information on patients with colorectal cancer and their treatment outcomes, but also routinely performs molecular characterization of these tumors, which can show which of these cancers are associated with Lynch Syndrome or other genetic abnormalities. Importantly, this molecular categorization allows researchers to discover which of the three possible pathways led to a patient's cancer ? the traditional chromosomal instability pathway accounts for about 80 percent of all colorectal cancers, and Lynch Syndrome combines with an epigenetic pathway to account for the remaining 20 percent.

"Knowing a cancer's genetic makeup allows us to ask questions not only about colorectal cancer in general, but about its molecular subtypes separately. These three types are included under the umbrella of colorectal cancer but have different prognoses and react differently to therapies. Effectively, they're quite different diseases," Ahnen says.

One of the study's important findings was an 11 percent lifetime risk for breast cancer after Lynch-associated endometrial cancer, 2.51 times the risk of women outside this population. Also elevated with Lynch Syndrome were lifetime risks of bladder (9 percent) and kidney (11 percent) cancers. But while the current study expands the spectrum of cancers associated with Lynch Syndrome, it also provides estimates of risk of colorectal cancer that are lower than previous estimates.

"When you think about it," Ahnen says, "most of the prior data on Lynch-associated colorectal cancer risk was from people referred to a high-risk clinic usually because of a strong family history of cancer. Of course, these people are likely to have higher cancer risk than the general population. The registry data minimizes this selection bias and allows us to look at a more representative cross-section of the colorectal cancer population. This cross-section shows a 50-60 percent lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer in people with Lynch Syndrome, as opposed to earlier estimates of 70-80 percent risk."

"There are many remaining questions we can ask using the CCFR data," Ahnen says. "For example, what's the best way to screen people for Lynch Syndrome? Based on the risks the registry shows, should we screen all colorectal cancers for Lynch and then all family members of Lynch patients for the mutation or should we focus on some clinical subset of the population such as those with CRC at a young age? Likewise we can determine if colorectal cancers that arise from different molecular pathways are associated with different risk factor profiles, different prognoses or have different responses to available treatments."

To Ahnen, this specific study's findings are important but even more essential is the approach taken by the Colon Cancer Family Registry to collect and molecularly characterize these cancers. As cancer becomes an ever-longer list of related but distinctly different diseases, each perhaps with a molecular Achilles heel, the Colon Cancer Family Registry allows researchers like Ahnen to ask questions about treatment of these molecular subtypes that are rarely possible with cancer registries that treat, say, breast or prostate cancers as monolithic diseases.

Cancer is becoming seen as "cancers" and in many ways, the Colon Cancer Family Registry allows researchers in this field to lead the way.

Man rescues dog from block of floating ice (VIDEO)

Pifas, a three-year-old golden retriever mix, was rescued by a kind stranger who helped guide the dog to safety after it became stranded on a block of ice in a frozen lake.

NBCNews.com reports that Pifas disappeared from his owner?s home and was missing for over a week before he was spotted some 200 feet from shore on Lake Michigan by local resident Dave Kehnast.

?I was up on the fire escape there on the seventh floor and I saw him way out there, and so I grabbed the kayak and went out there,? Kehnast said.

When Kehnast realized the dog was not able to get back to shore on his own, he donned a wetsuit, got into a kayak and headed out to save the starving and confused dog, according to Opposing View.

Pifas? owner, Nerijus Steponavicius, said the dog had gotten out while his landlord was changing locks on the doors to his apartment building while Steponavicius was at school for the day.

Kehnast says Pifas was too afraid and confused to be picked up. Instead, Kehnast had to yell commands and encouragement to the dog to help guide him back to shore.

?I just kept encouraging him, ?here boy, here boy, here boy,?? Kehnast told Opposing Views. ?I got really close to him and he wanted to bite me so I just stayed on me and at that point I could get into the water and just hustled him along. I wanted to just grab him because it was shallow enough where I could stand, and I just wanted to get my hands on him but he wanted to bite me, it looked like. He didn?t want anyone touching him.?

The Chicago Fire Department also assisted, flying in a helicopter to help drive Pifas closer to shore.

After Pifas made it back to shore, he was taken to a nearby veterinary clinic for recovery and monitoring. He was reunited with Steponavicius, who reportedly learned of his dog?s rescue after family members alerted him to stories appearing on the news.

"He's really shy and he started jumping," Steponavicius said.

Of course, it was not an entirely happy ending for the adventurous golden retriever. Officials said Pifas had to be neutered before they agreed to turn him back over to his owner.

Indiana is No. 1 in The Associated Press' Top 25 for the fourth straight week, while Gonzaga moved to No. 2 for the first time in school history.

While the West Coast Bulldogs made some news at the top of the poll Monday, Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs from Down South, moved into the rankings for the first time since a 13-week run in 1984-85, their only appearance in the poll.

Louisiana Tech, which is 25th this week, was led back then to a ranking as high as No. 7 by a forward named Karl Malone. Gonzaga at that time had a point guard named John Stockton. They went on to become one of the greatest combinations in NBA history with the Utah Jazz, were members of the Dream Team and both were inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Hoosiers, who have been ranked No. 1 for a total of 10 weeks this season, received all but one first-place vote from the 65-member national media panel.

Gonzaga, which got the other No. 1 vote, was ranked third last week. The Bulldogs were also that high in the poll for the final two weeks of 2003-04.

Duke moved up three spots to third and is followed by Michigan and Miami, which dropped from second after falling to Wake Forest, the Hurricanes' first Atlantic Coast Conference loss this season.

Kansas is sixth, followed by Georgetown, Florida, Michigan State and Louisville.

Saint Louis, which beat Butler and VCU last week, moved into 18th in the poll, the Billikens' first ranking since being in for one week last season.

Colorado State, which was 22nd and lost twice last week, and VCU, which was 24th, dropped out.

Officials press Facebook over Newtown postings

(AP) ? Facebook offered assurances Monday that the social media site is removing some posts and so-called tribute pages related to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting over concerns they're being used to exploit the tragedy.

Echoing complaints already brought by some Sandy Hook families and state officials, Connecticut's two U.S. senators, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty requested the removal of offending pages in a letter to Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg Monday morning.

The lawmakers said some pages purportedly set up to honor the victims of the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown have been used to exploit or harass the victims' families and could be used as vehicles for financial fraud. State Attorney General George Jepsen said his office raised similar concerns with Facebook over the weekend.

Jodi Seth, a Facebook spokesperson, said in a statement that the company has been working closely since December with Jepsen's office, the families and their representatives to respond quickly to concerns with dedicated staff handling complaints over Sandy Hook pages.

Seth said Facebook wants to respond quickly "while also recognizing that people across the country want to express grief for a terrible national tragedy."

"We will continue to be vigilant," Seth said in a statement.

In Monday's letter, the lawmakers many pages still online appear to violate Facebook's own terms of use, which prohibit users from creating accounts for anyone other than themselves. They said more than 100 pages are dedicated just one of the victims, slain teacher Victoria Soto.

Some of those contain postings from conspiracy theorists who claim the shootings were staged, and that Soto and others were actors.

"Certainly there have been many, too many, of these pages that are intimidating or harassing or exploitive," U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said. "I'm pleased that Facebook has responded positively."

The lawmakers said Facebook also had received complaints from Soto's family and the family of Kaitlin Roig, a first-grade teacher who survived the shooting and has been credited with saving the lives of her students by locking the class in a small bathroom and barricading the door.

A Facebook page titled "Kaitlin Roig is a Hero" contains numerous well-wishes but also prompted abusive posts, such as one that reads, "Congratulations Kaitlin or whatever your name is.. Now you're famous and got to meet the 'President.' You ought to be ashamed of yourself."

That post was still on the page Monday afternoon.

Jepsen said his office spoke with Facebook officials about the problem on Saturday and the site promised to continue to work with his office to remove postings designed to harass or intimidate the victims or their families.

"Facebook also will treat pages being used unlawfully to solicit donations in the names of the Newtown victims similarly," Jepsen said.

There has been one fraud arrest already connected to a Sandy Hook Facebook posting.

Nouel Alba, a 37-year-old New York City woman, is accused of using her Facebook account, telephone calls and text messages to seek donations for what she called a "funeral fund." She allegedly told one donor that she had to enter the scene of the mass shooting in Newtown to identify her nephew, according to the criminal complaint. Jury selection in her trial has been scheduled for March.

Blumenthal said they are not asking that all Sandy Hook-related tribute or donation pages be removed, just the ones that are not authorized by the families.

"Facebook needs to follow its own rules, and enforce those rules," Blumenthal said.

What does The Undertaker's return in Texas mean?

The Deadman rose again in Texas this past weekend.

To the shock of the assembled denizens of the WWE Universe, The Undertaker haunted WWE with his presence for the first time in nearly a year when he made his surprise return to the ring at a WWE Live Event in the Lone Star State. The Phenom?s appearance was somewhat unusual by his standards. He did not lay a solo challenge at the feet of any Superstars, but instead joined forces with former World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus in a tag team bout against Damien Sandow and Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett. It?s safe to say the presence of the former WWE Champion was a welcome sight to the assembled crowd, to say nothing of the outnumbered Sheamus. But The Undertaker?s return, awe-inspiring though it was, has still left the WWE Universe with more questions than answers.

For one, now that The Deadman has staked claim to his ?yard? once again with an appearance in a WWE ring, does that mean he is likely to repeat the feat on Raw anytime soon? The last time Undertaker appeared on WWE television was at Raw 1,000, where he aided his brother Kane in dispatching a squadron of unruly Superstars hell-bent on attacking The Big Red Monster. Triple H promised some months later at the 2012 Slammy Awards that the WWE Universe had not seen the last of The Phenom, and this appearance in Texas fulfilled The King of Kings? prophecy.

But it seems unlikely that this is all The Deadman has in store for the WWE Universe. Granted, a Superstar as mercurial and legendary as The Undertaker certainly has earned the clout to come and go as he pleases, and it is entirely possible that battling Barrett and Sandow was something he?d felt like doing for some time. But the WWE Universe should first remember that WrestleMania season is upon us and no one has yet to come forth to tempt fate by challenging The Undertaker?s 20-0 streak on The Grandest Stage of Them All. By this time last year (and in fact, the year before that), a challenger had already either emerged or been chosen by Undertaker himself. So perhaps The Deadman?s appearance in Texas was not so much an act of camaraderie toward Sheamus as a reminder to everyone else ? from Barrett and Sandow all the way on up to WWE Champion The Rock ? that he is still out there, waiting for a brave soul to step forward and test their worth in the shadow of New York City.

Triple H was right. The Undertaker has returned. For the WWE Universe, it is a blessing. For the WWE locker room, it could be a curse. It is a conundrum. It is a friendly reminder. It is a welcome sight and maybe, just maybe, it is an open challenge. Whether anyone responds appropriately is all that?s left to be seen.

Here are some tweets from Superstars and fans who were in attendance for The Deadman's return:

  • @RandyOrton: Got to watch Undertaker perform in Waco tonight at the #Smackdown live event. Very motivating to watch him do his thing. #Legend Killer
  • @RRWWE: Can't describe the feeling we all got here tonight in Waco, Texas after having The Undertaker compete. I legit got goosebumps!
  • @WadeBarrett: Hell of a night at #WWEWaco. Expect the unexpected...
  • @melissaashley08: Everyone was so confused when the lights went off. My first thought "JERICHO?!" Then... DING! "OMG!!!!" Lol
  • @ForeverASoldier: @WWESheamus I wish I could have been in Waco to see you & Undertaker team up!! Totally my dream tag-team! <3 So jealous right now.
  • @BillNWrestling: So Undertaker performed at a house show in Waco, TX last night.. Is he back? I hope so. Would be bummed to be at Mania without Deadman..
  • @Robot_Khan: OMG! Undertaker returned at Smackdown Live Event as he tag-teamed with Sheamus at Waco, Texas! Does this mean he's gonna be at WrestleMania?
  • @LethalLaserKJ: I still can't believe The Undertaker returned at a live event in Texas. That's so rad
  • @VinnyNovello: Undertaker is BACK!! he returned at a house show in Texas last night! I hope he's ready to go for WrestleMania 29 ! #hyped

Baseball. Baseball Suffers 3-2 Defeat at VCU

Feb. 23, 2013

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Brian O'Keefe was 3-for-4 but the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell at VCU on Saturday afternoon by a 3-2 score. Senior Greg Kumpel also had a pair of hits for the Hawks.

For the second straight day, VCU (4-0) scored a run in the first inning, as an error allowed Bill Cullen to score the game's first run.

Saint Joseph's (2-3) answered in the top half of the second as a two-out single by Anthony Cirillo scored Stefan Kancylarz with the tying run.

The Rams nosed in front once again in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Trevor Marino. VCU then loaded the bases with two outs, but Hawk starter Jordan Carter induced a pop fly to escape the jam.

The Hawks leveled the game a second time in the fifth as Chris Hueth hit a sacrifice fly to score Kumpel and knot the affair at two apiece.

It remained a 2-2 game until the seventh, when Landon Prentiss ripped a two-out double that plated Vimael Machin with what proved to be the winning run.

Carter allowed eight hits but just the two runs in five innings, striking out two and walking one. Kevin Burum took the loss, allowing a run and notching four strikeouts in two innings to fall to 1-1. Steven Schuler worked a scoreless eighth for SJU.

?

?

Logan Kanuik tossed three and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief, striking out six, to earn the win, while Matt Lees pitched the ninth for his third save.

The series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at The Diamond.

FlaccoGetty Images

If the Ravens want to make Joe Flacco the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, and if Flacco is satisfied to barely clear the bar set last year by Saints quarterback Drew Brees, there?s a quick and easy way to get this contract done.

Using Brees? 2012 contract as the starting point, Flacco would get a $40 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $5 million in 2013, and base salaries of $10 million in 2014, $13 million in 2015, $15 million in 2016, and $18 million in 2017.

Under the rules of signing-bonus proration, $8 million would be applied to each year?s salary cap.? That would result in a cap number of $13 million in 2013, $18 million in 2014, $21 million in 2015, $23 million in 2016, and $26 million in 2017.

It equates to a five-year payout of $101 million ? $1 million better than Brees and, for now, making Flacco the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

The two sides would have to decide whether and to what extent the money due beyond 2013 would be guaranteed, for injury only or fully.? Last year, Brees received $40 million in the first year, with $20 million guaranteed for injury only in future years.? (The injury guarantees eventually convert to full guarantees.)

The cap number in the final year would be a potential problem for the Ravens, since Flacco presumably would have one more long-term contract left before retirement.? Specifically, the $26 million cap number in 2017 would translate to a franchise tag of $31.2 million in 2018.? Thus, it would make more sense for the Ravens to tack on a sixth year at a base salary of, say, $21 million.

This would keep the average north of $20 million per year and it would give the Ravens a more manageable franchise number of $25.2 million for 2019.

Is it really that simple?? Yes, it is.? Which means that it likely won?t happen this way.

Even though it could be worked out in a matter of hours.? Or, if both sides are truly motivated, a matter of minutes.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 vs Apple iPad mini vs Google Nexus 7 specs comparison

Whether you are an admirer of 7 or 8 inch tablet devices, or don't really care about these particular screen sizes, the leading mobile gear makers decided that there is a market niche to be won here, and with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 everyone will have a dog in the small tablet fight this season. We are pitting Samsung's latest Note family member against its most formidable opponents - the Apple iPad mini and the Google Nexus 7?small affordable slates. While we don't have much details on price and availability for the Note 8.0 rather than Q2 in Europe and Asia, the other two have been around for a while, so you can have a look how they stack up in the table below. It's immediately clear that Samsung has placed a lot of effort to make its tablet as slim and light as possible, considering that it also has to house the S Pen silo and the stylus itself. The Note 8.0 is in fact slimmer and a tad lighter than the Nexus 7, despite being the slate with the largest screen of the bunch. Its resolution is actually the same as that of the Nexus 7, with a slightly lower pixel density because of the screen size. Note 8.0 also has the immediately recognizable styling of the Galaxy family with its rounded corners, looking like a larger Note II.

As far as processing power goes, the 1.6 GHz Exynos 4 Quad Cortex-A9 CPU might not be at the fastest edge of ARM's technology, but it would surely be more than enough to handle anything Android throws at it. Moreover, Samsung's tablet is the best of the bunch memorywise, sporting 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, as well as a microSD slot for more, which the other two don't have.

When we add the generous 4, 600 mAh battery and the myriad of productivity options added by the S Pen stylus and the accompanying software, it seems that Samsung has nailed it in terms of specs as usual, so the only thing remaining is to get one for a review to check out the performance side as well.

North Carolina Lawmakers Kill Medical Marijuana Bill After It Receives Annoying Level Of Support

The GOP-controlled North Carolina House Rules Committee killed a medical marijuana legalization bill earlier this week, after lawmakers complained that backers of the measure were bothering them with requests for their support.

As WRAL's N.C. Capitol blog reports, lawmakers allowed only 20 minutes of public debate on the legislation before deciding to give it an "unfavorable report." An infrequently used procedure, such an action effectively prevents any further medical marijuana legalization bills from being considered by the General Assembly this session.

A state Republican explained the extraordinary maneuver to N.C. Capital blog:

"We did it to be done with it, so people could move on for the session," said Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, R-Wake. He said lawmakers we're being "harassed" with phone calls and emails about medical marijuana.

The medical marijuana movement has seen some support in North Carolina, and on Wednesday, Catherine Lyles, a 51-year-old brain cancer survivor testified before lawmakers, telling them that marijuana had allowed her to regain her appetite after treatment. Medical marijuana advocates reportedly heavily outnumbered the single opponent who appeared at the hearing, but lawmakers were apparently unmoved by the showing of support.

Outlook.com exits preview with 60 million active users, Hotmail UI to be retired this summer

Outlook.com exits preview with 60 million active users, Hotmail UI to be retired this summer

It's been so long since Microsoft launched Outlook.com that we forgot it was technically in preview mode. Well, that ended today, at 12:01AM ET on the dot. The company just announced that the email service is no longer in beta, and that the site has racked up 60 million active users -- over a third of them Gmail converts. If you decide to join today, you'll be getting the same feature set announced last summer, just with a smoother, less glitchy experience (not that it was ever that buggy to begin with, if you ask us). To lure in even more users, Microsoft is planning on launching a massive advertising campaign, one that will include TV and radio spots (see one of them after the break), online ads and even posters in subway stations. Basically, the sort of heavy promotion Microsoft is already doing for Surface.

Regardless of how much success Microsoft has in converting Gmail loyalists, though, a lot more people are about to become acquainted with Outlook's clean UI: the company has said it plans to switch Hotmail users over to the Outlook interface by summertime. To be clear, Microsoft says it has no plans to shut down the hotmail.com domain, so your existing Hotmail email address is safe, and you don't even have to register for an Outlook.com addy if you don't want to. Additionally, all of your folders and settings will be preserved. It's just that you're soon going to have to say goodbye to the old Hotmail. Onward, we say.

Israeli Lunatic Sniper Instagrams a Photo of a Child in His Crosshairs

The Israeli Defense Forces has a history of overzealous campaigns on its official social media accounts. So maybe we shouldn't be surprised that an IDF sniper doesn't take his job very seriously. Or that's the impression we get, since he Instagrammed a photo of what appears to be a Palestinian child in the crosshairs of his rifle scope. Real, real messed up. More »

I think equity markets are only adjusting expectations slowly ? divergence between reality and expectations.?? (like in the US housing peak was in 2006, mkt rallied through to 2007)? Year-end came and left, US fiscal cliff was a non-event, and it was risk-on again for most equity markets.??? After the hard rally in emerging mkts equities in the past few months, I would expect 2h of the year to be disappointing for companies and investors ? will be good buying opportunity for those who know where to find value.

Inflation and disinflation, leverage and deleveraging, bubble and bust are now the normal state of world economies and markets under our global fiat fractional reserve banking money system.?? We have no choice but to navigate this as best as we can.? We are into the 4th year of a leveraging up cycle and some of the weaker areas have popped.? I would believe that the next downturn is now sooner rather than later.

In the US, I?m cautiously bullish on stocks, although some select stocks are way overpriced ? some recent data points which i find encouraging :
- record low foreclosures and recovery of housing
- record low crude oil imports (lowest since 2000), and rising domestic crude production
- cheap nat gas => large car companies (Ford, etc) recently announced plans to mass produce more? hybrids and electric vehicles.
- together with the above, this energy revolution will save america?s wallet over the next 10 years. record numbers of americans have turned from housing speculation and construction to producing energy (real value) which is great.? This transition would have been faster if the fed meddled less in the price and qty of money

Companies that I would expect to continue doing well and are not overvalued: Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B), Google (GOOG), Kinder Morgan Pipelines (KMI), Kohl?s (KSS).
Companies that I would expect to disappoint investors at some point this year: Amazon (AMZN), Rackspace (RAX), Mastercard (MA), Visa (V)

On currencies: I think there is room from here for relative strength of USD vs EUR, JPY, SGD.?? Have been bearish on JPY for more than a year, and continue to be so.? See my old presentation Japan Long Term Challenges.?? However, longer term I no longer believe in fiat currencies as a store of value.? The world has been in the midst of a currency war this past decade regardless what G-20 says.? Neither does Gold meet the highest criteria, although Gold-backed currency would be better for human innovation and progress.?? I take buffet?s approach that real assets (or partial ownership via equity) continue to be the best store of value throughout time and circumstance.?? His full 2011 Berkshire letter here.

Iterations: How Founders Can Fight Through The Great Fragmentation Of Talent

fightclubpictureThe #1 request I hear when talking to founders in San Francisco is: "We are hiring engineers. Know any?" We all know this is a big issue that's only getting worse, and so do most of the investors. But, I'm now starting to hear this so often, I'm beginning to worry that all the conventional tactics simply won't work. Early-stage startups that don't start experimenting with new ideas to source, recruit, and close engineers and other technical hires may end up running out of money or never achieving the product traction they need to get to the next level. I don't have data to support this, but my intuition is that technical talent is so fragmented right now, all options need to be reexamined and placed on the table.

Bouncing back from financial grief and loss

This guest post is from Psychotherapist Bobbi Emel who specializes in helping you face life?s significant challenges and regain your resiliency. Download her free ebook, ?Bounce Back! 5 keys to survive and thrive through life?s ups and downs.? You can find her blog at http://www.TheBounceBlog.com.

Some reader stories are guest posts containing information or general advice; others are examples of how a GRS reader achieved financial success or failure. These posts feature folks with all levels of financial maturity and income. Want to submit your own reader story? Here?s how.

I bet you?ve had some financial losses in the last five years or so. It seems like we all have, unfortunately. If you?re newly into a financial crisis such as seeing your retirement savings take a major loss, losing your house to foreclosure, or getting laid off your job, you may recognize some of these emotional experiences:

  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Guilt/self-reproach
  • Anxiety
  • Loneliness
  • Shock
  • Yearning

You may have also experienced any of these thinking patterns or behaviors:

  • Disbelief
  • Confusion
  • Preoccupation or rumination
  • Sleep and/or appetite disturbances
  • Absentmindedness
  • Social withdrawal
  • Crying
  • Restlessness

If you see yourself in some or all of these feelings, thoughts and behaviors, I have news for you: You might be grieving. We?re accustomed to thinking of grief as something that occurs only after a loved one dies. But the problem with this is that we might discount our feelings and not recognize them as grief when we lose something other than a loved one.

Complications of financial grief

You might find it difficult to express your feelings of grief about your financial situation. What is it about this type of grief that is different than the emotions we feel when we lose someone we love?

There are some complications:

Embarrassment: It?s one thing to tell someone that your mother died, but a completely different thing to share that you lost your money in a Ponzi scheme or any other issue related to a recession.

Loss of identity: You used to be Software Engineer Who Owns A House And Has Enough In the Bank To Put My Kids Through College and now you are Unemployed Dad Who Lost My House Due To Foreclosure And Had To Move The Family In With My Folks.

Maybe your situation isn?t that drastic, but you get the idea. You identify with your work and your social status, among other things, and so you might be unsure of who you are right now.

Feelings of betrayal: Dealing with a loss is difficult enough without the added emotional fallout from feeling betrayed by banks, mortgage lenders, the government, Bernie Madoff and Wall Street in general.

Now you are not only dealing with grief, but anger and resentment as well. In addition, the anger and resentment may be at a spouse, friend or relative who gave you bad financial advice.

Denying the magnitude of the loss: It?s easy to think, ?I shouldn?t be feeling this bad. It?s not like someone has died.? You devalue your own feelings because it?s ?not as bad? as something else.

The thought that financial crisis = personal failure: ?If I was a better money manager, this wouldn?t have happened. I?m such a jerk.?

?Why did I listen to that broker? I knew better. This is all my fault.?

?I must be a real loser to have thought I could refinance my house with an adjustable rate mortgage.?

This type of thinking is very easy to fall into, but certainly not helpful or true.

Lack of social ritual for this kind of grief: We have many rituals for the death of a person: funerals, memorials, sitting shiva, wakes, etc. These customs help us with closure and adjusting to the world without our loved one. But there are no rituals around the loss of finances and the dreams that went with them. We are left feeling unfinished and lost. So, it really is pretty complicated, isn?t it?

Surviving and thriving after financial loss

Surviving . . .

1. Acceptance

Accept the fact that this loss has really happened to you. If you find yourself thinking, ?Once the stock market comes back, everything will be fine? or ?Even though this new job pays half of what I made at my old job, we can still live the same way we did before,? you are in denial. It?s time to intentionally assess your situation and accept its reality.

Honor your own grief about what you have lost. This really is a loss ? be careful not to minimize it.

Don?t resist. This does not mean to give up. But it does mean to acknowledge both your emotions about your financial loss rather than fight against them. Going with the river current is much easier than fighting to swim against the current.

2. Build and use your support system

Find people you trust: friends, family, spiritual leaders. Gather your support team around you just as you would if you had lost a loved one.

Talk. You don?t have to talk about the specifics of the loss, just your feelings about it. This is an important way for you to process your grief and not get stuck in it.

Take your power back. By talking about your feelings related to the financial loss, you take the power away from the ?deep, dark secret? and shine the light of day on it.

3. Get a different perspective

Remember that you have made it through past challenges. When you?re faced with a loss, it can seem like the worst thing that has ever happened to you. And it might be. But remember that you have experienced many difficulties in your life and you have made your way through them.

Stay in the moment. Rather than ruminating about past events or fretting about the future, try to stay with what is happening right now. Life is happening in front of your eyes, not in the past or some time up ahead.

And thriving . . .

4. See what you can learn.

There?s a lesson in everything. Maybe you did make some poor financial decisions. Learn from your mistakes. Maybe your value system was overly focused on material things. Learn the joys of simpler living.

Maybe your kids didn?t really understand what it meant to pull together as a family until now. Help them learn this lesson during these tough times.

5. Find the gifts.

The sand that irritates the oyster eventually makes a pearl. The economic loss you are experiencing now may be the very thing you need to learn to thrive into new opportunities opening before you.

One woman I spoke to who had lost her job was doing surprisingly well emotionally. When I asked her how she maintained her good attitude, she said, ?I decided to expand rather than contract.? She took action to learn new skills, enjoy new experiences, and take a different path in life. Perhaps you are being given an opportunity to expand your life as well.

There are gifts to be found everywhere, even in the darkest of times. My late partner had breast cancer and when it was discovered, it was already at Stage IV. We could not think of a more terrible thing to happen. But, after using some of the ?surviving? tools above, we began to see the gifts pouring in.

We learned that we were much stronger than we thought, we learned how many caring friends we had, my partner ? who had always struggled with her self-image ? found out how many people truly loved her, and we found peace through renewed spirituality.

Getting your bounce back after financial loss may not mean getting your money or assets replaced, but it does mean learning to survive ? and thrive ? in the most difficult times.

Will you take this as an opportunity or a defeat?
