The Ministerial Conference on Women?s Role in the Development of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, (OIC) Member States adapted the Jakarta Declaration at the conclusion of its 4th session in Jakarta, 6 December 2012.
The declaration called on to create necessary measures in eradicating poverty by ensuring women?s equal access to full employment and decent work, among other, through the consideration of measures to remove structural and legal barriers, and to provide women with the economic opportunity for economic empowerment. It also affirmed women?s access to education, as well as vocational training at all levels that would encourage and maximizes their potential, and provides them with necessary skills and capacities to enter the labor market.
Meanwhile, the conference urged the OIC Member States to intensify effort to prevent all forms of violence against women and girls, including through gender sensitive training for law enforcement official, judiciary official and those who are at the forefront in dealing with cases and victims of violence, furthermore, encourage government to establish victim protection mechanism to help the victims cope with the trauma.
In the same vein, the participants invited the governments to join the OIC Women?s Development Organization in Cairo by signing its statute so that the organization could be fully functional and carry its mandate on the advancement of the role of women in development of OIC Member States.
In reference to the latest resolution of United Nations General Assembly on Palestine, the Declaration welcomed the upgrading of the status of Palestine to a non-member observer state. It also committed to take all measures aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women living under Israeli?s occupation.
The Conference commended the OIC Secretary General for his extensive efforts in promoting the cause of women and in empowering them in the OIC Member States with a view to enabling them to play greater role in the development and participate in the decision making mechanism at all levels since the time of his assumption of office in 2005.
At the end of the Conference, the participants decided to hold the 5th session in the Republic of Azerbaijan, while they expressed its appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and its people for the excellent arrangement and convocation of the Conference.
