The airline reported that no-one was injured in the incident which occurred after a battery overheated in the plane's ancillary power system.
Carol Anderson, a spokeswoman for Japan Airlines, said: "Smoke was initially discovered by maintenance staff in the rear end of the cabin, and confirmed by another maintenance staff who also detected smoke outside the aircraft."
The AFP news agency quoted Doug Alder, a spokesman for Boeing, as saying that the company was "aware of the situation [and was] working with the airline to understand more about it right now".
According to Ms Anderson, Japan Airlines cancelled the return flight to Tokyo Narita airport which was due to take place on January 7th, although it said it would still be running its Boston service flying a Boeing 787 on January 8th.
