From Dallas to Damascus: The Texas 'straight shooter' who could replace Syria's Assad

He is a ?straight shooter? from Texas who worked as a telecoms executive until November. But Ghassan Hitto now finds himself the presumptive caretaker-leader of Syria as world powers plot the end of Bashar Assad?s crumbling regime.

The American citizen, born in Syria, is the new prime minister of the opposition?s interim government ? the apparatus that the international community hopes will seal the end of Assad?s rule.

Friends describe Hitto, 50, as ?sincere? and ?practical,? but the charismatic technocrat will need all the charm he can muster to unify Syria?s fragmented opposition.

His rapid rise has prompted questions about how the deadly conflict should end and has cast a light on infighting, fueled by regional countries purportedly supporting certain opposition figures.

The Free Syrian Army, one of the key rebel groups fighting Assad?s forces on the ground inside Syria, responded to Hitto?s appointment in Istanbul on March 18 by refusing to recognize his authority.

?The situation there is so dire, I?m afraid for him,? said Mustafa Carroll,?who worked alongside Hitto in Texas as a volunteer at Muslim advocacy groups. ?It?s a big responsibility and it?s very complicated.?

?He?s a straight shooter, very sincere, very well-regarded and a very active community person,? said Carroll, who is director of the Houston chapter of the Council for American-Islamic Relations.

Seen as Muslim Brotherhood's pick
Hitto, a father of four, lived in the U.S. for three decades, most recently on the outskirts of Dallas working as director of operations for telecoms supplier Inovar, where co-worker?Arshad Syed remembers him as "honest" and "personable."

He left Syria in the early 1980s and received an MBA at Indiana Wesleyan University on top of a degree in computer science and mathematics from Purdue University in Indianapolis.

Strongly active in community groups, he was a member of the board of directors at the private Islamic school Bright Horizons Academy, in Garland, Texas, where his wife Suzanne still teaches English.

In November, he made the decision to get involved in the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces -- the international grouping that seeks to end Syria?s civil war on the condition that Assad is removed from power.

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

?Like a lot of people living away, he just wanted to help his homeland,? said Carroll.

Hitto?s wife did not return calls, but the academy issued a statement describing him as ?a practical man with great management experience.?

It said: ?He was always open minded and open to debate. He conducted himself with the highest honesty and integrity. His talent for bringing people together for the common good will be missed in our community.?

Hitto, a respected technocrat but an inexperienced politician, won the overwhelming number of votes from those who cast a ballot -- other possible candidates that included a former Syrian regime official -- but some members of the Coalition boycotted the vote in protest at the process.

Not everyone was convinced the opposition needed an interim government, seeing it as yet another organization that could compete for control of a post-Assad Syria.

Official spokesman Walid al-Bunni walked out of the vote in protest and Moaz al-Khatib, president of the Coalition, resigned and had to be persuaded back on board just in time for the Arab Summit in Doha, which began Tuesday.

?Hitto?s whole role has been undermined from the start,? said Christopher Phillips, associate fellow of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at U.K. think tank, Chatham House.

?He?s very much the Muslim Brotherhood?s man, and is seen as such. There was a lot of pressure to get an interim opposition leader in place ahead of the Doha talks, but the way in which it was done, and the choice of very much the man that Qatar and Turkey wanted, has infuriated and alienated just about every key player in the process.?

Represents 'the some of the some'
Salman Shaik, director of the Brookings Center in Doha, said many Syrians "still regard the appointment of Hitto with suspicion." Even if Assad is toppled from power, Hitto is by no means certain of the authority he needs to implement free and fair elections.

?The huge elephant in the room is that there is no guarantee that, if and when the Assad regime falls, that any of the groups fighting in Syria will gather around this official opposition,? said Phillips. ?There are huge uncertainties in all of this.?

Abdulrahman al-Rashed, commentator and general manager of the Al Arabiya news channel, wrote: ?I am confident that Mr. Hitto is a respectable person and that he cares about Syria. But during this difficult time, we want a person who represents everyone and not only some Syrians. Some members of the Syrian coalition decided to choose Hitto but the coalition itself only represents some Syrians. Therefore, Hitto represents the some of the some!?

Yasser Tabarra, the Chicago-based legal adviser to the Coalition, says the interim government will focus on managing the 60 to 70 percent of the country that is liberated and controlled by opposition rebels.

The government would coordinate local management efforts, including establishing law and order, and delivering basic goods and services, Tabarra said.

Two key stumbling blocks remain: whether the Coalition should enter into any form of negotiations with the regime while Assad is still in power, and whether Hitto, an ethnic Kurd viewed as the Muslim Brotherhood's favored candidate, can unite the ideological differences between its liberal and Islamist members.

In his task, Hitto at least has the backing of the U.S.

?This is an individual who, out of concern for the Syrian people, left a very successful life in Texas to go and work on humanitarian relief for the people of his home country,? said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland after Hitto?s election.

?We?re very hopeful that his election will foster unity and cohesion among the opposition.?

Ivy Larson's 30 Minute Fitness Fusion Workout - Diets in Review

Everybody wants to be fit, but let?s face it; making a commitment to an exercise program can be a mega?time-zapper. The good news is, if you learn to exercise smarter you can still get amazing results in a very short amount of time. If you commit to a well-designed circuit-style workout that overloads all of your major muscles, works large muscle groups with compound movements and keeps your heart rate elevated the entire time then you can get fit, lean and strong exercising just 30 minutes, three days a week.

If weight loss is a concern, as long as you keep moving quickly from one exercise to the next to keep?your heart rate elevated you don?t need to run a single lap or put in any extra cardio time either.?That?s because hormonal changes occur with circuit-style resistance exercises that create a fat-burning environment (1). For the best weight loss results you will of course also need to watch what you eat. A ?clean cuisine? style diet is your best bet for healthy, long-term weight loss.

As for picking the best exercises, I prefer a ?full fitness fusion? approach that fuses a variety of exercise disciplines and focuses on full body moves rather than isolation exercises. If you want to get fit fast you will get much better quicker results doing compound exercises like push-ups as opposed to an isolation exercise like biceps curls. As with anything, the smarter you work the less time you need to spend and the better your results will be.

Giant panda artificially inseminated at U.S. National Zoo

    By Reuters

Veterinarians at the National Zoo artificially inseminated the zoo's female giant panda Mei Xiang on Saturday after natural breeding failed to occur, zoo keepers said.

Mei Xiang was put under general anesthesia and inseminated with a combination of fresh semen and frozen semen collected from the zoo's male giant panda Tian Tian. The scientists said they planned a second insemination later on Saturday.

Veterinarians detected a rise in hormone levels on Tuesday, indicating Mei Xiang was ready to breed but said "no competent breeding" between the panda pair had occurred.

"We are hopeful that our breeding efforts will be successful this year, and we're encouraged by all the behaviors and hormonal data we've seen so far," said Dave Wildt, head of the Center for Species Survival at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.

Scientists will continue to monitor Mei Xiang's hormone levels in the coming months and conduct ultrasounds to determine whether she is pregnant. A pregnancy lasts between 95 and 160 days, they said.

Mei Xiang has given birth to two cubs. One died a week after its birth last year. The other was born in 2005 and is now at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong.

Risk of autism is not increased by 'too many vaccines too soon,' study shows

Mar. 29, 2013 ? Although scientific evidence suggests that vaccines do not cause autism, approximately one-third of parents continue to express concern that they do; nearly 1 in 10 parents refuse or delay vaccinations because they believe it is safer than following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) schedule. A primary concern is the number of vaccines administered, both on a single day and cumulatively over the first 2 years of life. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers concluded that there is no association between receiving "too many vaccines too soon" and autism.

Dr. Frank DeStefano and colleagues from the CDC and Abt Associates, Inc. analyzed data from 256 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 752 children without ASD (born from 1994-1999) from 3 managed care organizations. They looked at each child's cumulative exposure to antigens, the substances in vaccines that cause the body's immune system to produce antibodies to fight disease, and the maximum number of antigens each child received in a single day of vaccination.

The researchers determined the total antigen numbers by adding the number of different antigens in all vaccines each child received in one day, as well as all vaccines each child received up to 2 years of age. The authors found that the total antigens from vaccines received by age 2 years, or the maximum number received on a single day, was the same between children with and without ASD. Furthermore, when comparing antigen numbers, no relationship was found when they evaluated the sub-categories of autistic disorder and ASD with regression.

Although the current routine childhood vaccine schedule contains more vaccines than the schedule in the late 1990s, the maximum number of antigens that a child could be exposed to by 2 years of age in 2013 is 315, compared with several thousand in the late 1990s. Because different types of vaccines contain varying amounts of antigens, this research acknowledged that merely counting the number of vaccines received does not adequately account for how different vaccines and vaccine combinations stimulate the immune system. For example, the older whole cell pertussis vaccine causes the production of about 3000 different antibodies, whereas the newer acellular pertussis vaccine causes the production of 6 or fewer different antibodies.

An infant's immune system is capable of responding to a large amount of immunologic stimuli and, from time of birth, infants are exposed to hundreds of viruses and countless antigens outside of vaccination. According to the authors, "The possibility that immunological stimulation from vaccines during the first 1 or 2 years of life could be related to the development of ASD is not well-supported by what is known about the neurobiology of ASDs." In 2004, a comprehensive review by the Institute of Medicine concluded that there is not a causal relationship between certain vaccine types and autism, and this study supports that conclusion.

Pope leads Good Friday rite at Rome Colosseum

    By Philip Pullella

ROME (Reuters) - Thousands of people holding candles turned out at Rome's Colosseum to see Pope Francis mark the first Good Friday of his pontificate with a traditional "Way of the Cross" procession around the ancient amphitheatre.

Francis, who was elected on March 13, sat under a red canopy on Rome's Palatine Hill as representatives of the faithful from around the world alternated carrying a wooden cross on the day Christians commemorated Jesus's death by crucifixion.

"Sometimes it may seem as though God does not react to evil, as if he is silent," the Argentine pope said, speaking slowly in Italian and in a somber voice at the end of the evening service.

"And yet, God has spoken, he has replied, and his answer is the Cross of Christ: a word which is love, mercy, forgiveness. It is also reveals a judgment, namely that God, in judging us, loves us," he said.

"Christians must respond to evil with good," he said, urging them to beware "the evil that continues to work in us and around us".

The meditations for the 14 "stations of the cross" which commemorate events in the last hours of Jesus's life - from when Pontius Pilate condemned him to death to his burial in a rock tomb - were written by young people from Lebanon.

The wooden cross was passed from one group and person to another - including a person in a wheelchair. Those who carried it came from Italy, India, China, Nigeria, Syria, Lebanon and Brazil.

Several of the meditations, read by actors, referred to conflict in the Middle East and the suffering of its people.

One meditation called the Middle East "a land lacerated by injustice and violence".

Francis praised those Lebanese Christians and Muslims who tried to live together and who, he said, in doing so gave a sign of hope to the world.

Prayers were read out for exploited and abused children, refugees, the homeless and victims of religious intolerance, war, violence, terrorism, poverty, injustice and drug addiction.

There were also prayers against abortion and euthanasia.

Good Friday is the second of four hectic days leading up to Easter Sunday, the most important day in the Christian liturgical calendar.

On Holy Thursday, two young women were among 12 people whose feet the pope washed and kissed at a traditional ceremony in a Rome youth prison, the first time a pontiff has included females in the rite.

After celebrating an Easter eve service, on Easter Sunday he will deliver his first "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message in St. Peter's Square.

Governor signs bill for health insurance exchange

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- New Mexico can move ahead with establishing a state-run health insurance exchange under legislation signed into law Thursday by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

Martinez is one of a small number of GOP governors to opt for a state-run exchange under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. States had the option of establishing their own exchange, leaving it to the federal government or forming a state-federal partnership.

The new law takes effect immediately, and one of the next steps is the appointment of a 13-member governing board for the exchange.

The exchange is to serve as a marketplace for the uninsured to buy medical coverage. One of the early decisions for the board likely will be selecting a contractor to establish a computer system, which will allow individuals and small businesses to shop online for health care plans offered by private insurers.

Uninsured individuals and families can receive federal subsidies to reduce the amount they pay for insurance. Small businesses can be eligible for a tax credit to help provide medical coverage for workers.

New Mexico faces a tight deadline ?under federal law ? to have the exchange ready to enroll the uninsured starting in October and be fully operating in January.

It's estimated that about 200,000 New Mexicans may be able to buy health insurance through the exchange by 2020.

"As I said during my State of the State address, I didn't support Obamacare, but it is the law of the land. My job is to implement this law in a way that best serves New Mexicans," Martinez said in a statement.

The exchanges have placed Republican governors in an awkward position, given how much the party has opposed the health care law. Nevada and Idaho are taking the state-run exchange approach while Iowa is pursuing a partnership with the federal government. Utah already has an exchange but it doesn't cover individuals, as required by federal law.

The Martinez administration previously had taken steps to establish an exchange through an existing organization ? the New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance, which is a nonprofit public corporation established in 1994 to provide access to insurance for small businesses and some individuals.

However, work on the exchange was put on hold during the recent legislative session and because of the threat of a possible lawsuit challenging whether the governor could unilaterally create the new insurance marketplace. Attorney General Gary King contended that the Legislature had to change state law for the alliance to be able carry out federally managed duties of an insurance exchange.

Martinez and legislators eventually reached an agreement on legislation to create the framework for an exchange. One initial dispute was over the board's power, and whether it should be able to regulate what health insurance plans are offered to consumers. Federal law spells out minimum requirements for health coverage, and it will be up to the state insurance superintendent's office to determine whether plans meet qualifying standards.

"This may not be a perfect solution, but it is a start that helps keep New Mexico on the path toward the creation of a unique solution for New Mexicans," said Sen. Benny Shendo Jr., D-Jemez Pueblo, a sponsor of the measure.

The law requires a Native American service center to ensure the exchange's services are accessible for members of New Mexico's Indian tribes and pueblos.

The governor will name six board members, including the secretary of the Human Services Department, and legislative leaders will appoint six members. The state superintendent of insurance also is on the board but will vote only to break ties. The board must include two insurance industry representatives as well as a health care provider and consumer advocate.

Sand From Fracking Could Pose Lung Disease Risk To Workers

    Keith Srakocic/AP

When workplace safety expert Eric Esswein got a chance to see fracking in action not too long ago, what he noticed was all the dust.

It was coming off big machines used to haul around huge loads of sand. The sand is a critical part of the hydraulic fracturing method of oil and gas extraction. After workers drill down into rock, they create fractures in that rock by pumping in a mixture of water, chemicals and sand. The sand keeps the cracks propped open so that oil and gas are released.

But sand is basically silica ? and breathing in silica is one of the oldest known workplace dangers. Inside the lungs, exposure to the tiny particles has been shown to sometimes lead to serious diseases like silicosis and cancer.

Traditionally, silica exposure has been associated with jobs like mining, manufacturing and construction. But, as Esswein, a researcher with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and other safety experts have started to realize, some workers in the newly burgeoning fracking industry may be at risk, too, because of their exposure to silica dust.

"When sand was handled ? that is, when it was transported by machines on site, or whenever these machines that move sand were refilled ? dust, visible dust was created," Esswein says.

Dust blows off a pile of fracking sand at a mine near Chippewa Falls, Wis., on Dec. 15, 2011. Some of the air samples the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health experts collected at fracking sites had such high levels of silica that the respirators typically worn by workers wouldn't offer enough protection, according to NIOSH standards.

Some of the air samples the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health experts collected at fracking sites had such high levels of silica that the respirators typically worn by workers wouldn't offer enough protection, according to NIOSH standards.

    Steve Karnowski/AP

He was visiting fracking sites because he wanted to study the potential chemical hazards for oil and gas workers, and he initially figured he and his colleagues would probably assess workers' exposures to chemicals like drilling fluids. But when he saw the plumes of dust coming off the sand-handling machines and surrounding workers, he realized it could be a real hazard. The government has long set limits on how much workers can inhale.

"Knowing what I know about silica and respirable dust, that was the particular chemical that we chose to look at," Esswein says.

He and his colleagues visited 11 fracking sites in five states: Arkansas, Colorado, North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Texas. At every site, the researchers found high levels of silica in the air. It turned out that 79 percent of the collected samples exceeded the recommended exposure limit set by Esswein's agency.

There were some controls in place, says Esswein, who notes that "at every site that we went to, workers wore respirators."

But about one-third of the air samples they collected had such high levels of silica, the type of respirators typically worn wouldn't offer enough protection.

These unexpected findings have come just as federal safety officials are trying to set stricter controls on silica for all industries. Some proposed new rules have been under review at the White House Office of Management and Budget for more than two years.

Peg Seminario, director of safety and health with the AFL-CIO, a group of unions that has been pushing for stronger silica regulation, says the situation with fracking is a wake-up call.

"Hopefully it will give some impetus for the need for the silica regulation ? that there is a whole other population at risk and those numbers are potentially growing," says Seminario.

    Keith Srakocic/AP

Workplace inspectors with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration wouldn't have been aware of this potential risk for fracking workers before this recent study because, unless they receive a complaint or there's an accident, they generally don't see the process of hydraulic fracturing. That part of setting up a well happens quickly ? and once a well is up and running, contractors move on to the next one.

Government officials and the fracking industry say they're now working together to reduce workers' exposures. They started with quick fixes, like putting up warning signs and simply closing hatches on sand-moving machines.

Some oil and gas companies are also testing new technologies. Tim Hicks, a safety expert with Encana Corp., says they've been trying vacuum systems that attach to sand-moving machines and suck up the dust.

The results so far are encouraging, Hicks says, but his company is still testing to see how much of a reduction in airborne silica is reasonably achievable.

"We'd like to envision a site that, you know, we could handle sand and sequester it all, and perhaps someday not need to use respirators," says Hicks.

He says he's not sure whether that goal is possible, or how long it would take to get to that point. "But I can say that at the rate we're going," Hicks says, "we're much more likely to hit that [target] than we were prior to this issue being recognized."

Hicks says he has only been working in this part of the oil and gas business for a few years and couldn't speculate as to why the industry didn't recognize this potential health risk earlier. People, he says, seemed to think the dust was basically just dirt.

The new movie stars: how Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and Ryan Gosling are redefining stardom

    By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Movie stars are an endangered species, so how does a rising generation of Hollywood talent break into the big time if having their name above the title means less than it ever has before?

Studios are making fewer movies and handing out smaller deals to the actors who anchor them. The number of stars who command a big paycheck, boast major acting chops and deliver a massive opening weekend at the box office can be counted on both hands.

Despite the more earthbound nature of today's stardom, there is still a cavalcade of young, up-and-coming actors who are forging fascinating careers and building a following. The approach they are taking differs wildly from the one employed a decade ago, and their interpretation of stardom is more malleable.

"Now more than ever it's really about the role rather than the size of the movie," Todd Lieberman, producer of "Warm Bodies" and "The Muppets," told TheWrap. "Actors are making choices based on interesting material rather than paydays. They would much rather build a career off a supporting role in a phenomenal director's film, rather than a lead role in a movie where they might be getting paid more, but it does not have the same cache."

Today's stars are more entrepreneurial, more digitally savvy and as interested in building long and creatively fulfilling careers as they are in scoring a franchise role. They are as willing to pop up in a web series as they are to don a superhero's cape - just as long as the work is stimulating.

In terms of actors that offer that magic amalgam of artistic and commercial appeal, there's Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr., Johnny Depp. But from there the list gets short. Although stars still matter in terms of getting financing for films, the reality is that the $20 million paydays those actors still command, is out of reach for even the hottest young talents.

The new models for stardom are the likes of Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum. In some cases, they've earned all the trappings of stardom - the magazine covers, the screaming fans - without even anchoring a blockbuster. Gosling, after all, has never starred in a movie that has grossed $100 million domestically.

What they have done is piece together interesting careers with a range of roles that straddle genres and budget ranges. Sometimes, as in the case of Chastain, that even meant a stint on Broadway, to show that versatility extends from screen to stage.

"It is critical for a young star to establish credibility through serious parts," Marc Shmuger, the former chairman of Universal Studios and a producer of the upcoming film, "The Spectacular Now," told TheWrap.

"That lays the foundation for actors like Jessica Chastain or Jennifer Lawrence to have the longevity of careers of real movie stars. The two biggest movies stars, Robert Downey and Johnny Depp, established credibility after years and years of serious roles, so their popularity came organically."

That's what Bradley Cooper seems to be doing. Last fall, when "The Hangover" actor was earning critical raves for his performance as a bipolar man in "Silver Linings Playbook," he told TheWrap that the most important decision he makes in terms of committing to a project is his choice of collaborators.\

"It's really simple: I just want to work with great directors," Cooper told TheWrap.

"There's a reason why Martin Scorsese works with Robert De Niro for six movies and then Leonardo DiCaprio for six movies. Because when it works, cinema is a collaborative art form," he added.

The previous approach to launching a star by aligning a hot young actor like Shia LaBeouf (right) with a special-effects extravaganza has produced some big whiffs of late. Taylor Kitsch saw his movie career flame out spectacularly before it had much chance to light up when audiences rejected his star-turns, first in "John Carter" and then in "Battleship" in the space of three months. Likewise, Nicholas Hoult garnered critical attention for his supporting role in "A Single Man" and leading performance in the box-office hit "Warm Bodies," only to suffer a setback when the more overtly commercial "Jack the Giant Slayer" flopped badly.

Clearly, getting that tentpole picture doesn't always lead to a career as the next Bruce Willis or Harrison Ford.

"Sometimes people get in position where they get in a big movie and overplay their hand," Wyck Godfrey, a producer of "Twilight," said. "What that huge check does is put a target on an actor's back."

It's not that these big-budget productions should be eschewed entirely. Wyck said that even though special effects have become the main draw in films like "Transformers" or "Life of Pi," there is still one group of properties that reliably turn out big stars: young adult novels. After all, Lawrence had picked up an Oscar nomination for "Winter's Bone" and appeared in "X-Men: First Class," but it wasn't until "The Hunger Games" that she became J-Law, a hyphenated teen idol.

"Because fans of the book series love those characters, their fondness for the material gets transported onto the actor playing them," Godfrey said. "The trick is just to not get enslaved to the character."

He said that's a trap that Lawrence, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Shailene Woodley, who is set to star in the screen adaption of the best-seller "Divergent," have largely avoided by mixing up their performances in young adult epics with smaller-budgeted movies like "On the Road" or "Cosmopolis" that stretch themselves as an actor.

Despite these success stories, there has been a noticeable diminution of the term "star," producers and agents say. The rise of YouTube, Twitter and other social media platforms, not to mention the ubiquity of digital cameras and other affordable production technology, have created a deluge of would-be icons. In a world where "Gangham Style" singer PSY or "Friday" belter Rebecca Black can command as many, if not more Google hits than, say, Anne Hathaway, the meaning of stardom has become at once more democratic and more meaningless.

"Everyone is simultaneously a star and a fan, so what it means to be a star is no longer shrouded in mystique, because it's been brought down to the level of the audience," Shmuger said. "It's harder today than it ever was in the past to create a meaningful differentiation between yourself and the mass of instant stars who populate YouTube."

That may be the case, but other observers say that the response for this Internet era crop of actors should be to embrace a multi-platform approach to building an audience. Peter Principato, a talent manager and founding partner of Principato-Young Entertainment, argues that YouTube and other digital spaces can serve as incubators for young stars, particularly of the comic variety.

"By posting short films or doing funny weird things with lots of personality, these people are building their fan bases, and the industry is starting to pay attention," Principato said. "A lot of these kids are more ambitious and creative than the ones that came before them."

He's talking about actors who are just starting out, but even more-established performers can see their star enhanced by exhibiting digital prowess. Actors like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who started the open collaborative production company HitRecord.org, have built up their artistic bona fides by releasing videos straight for the web, and James Franco has created a brand for himself as a cultural omnivore as much by blogging about "Girls" for the Huffington Post as he has by hosting the Oscars or starring in "Oz: the Great and Powerful."

The internet may be lowering the barriers to entry for stardom, but it's also giving stars more outlets to express themselves and more control over the products they put out for public consumption.

"Places like YouTube and Amazon have begun to fill the role of studios and networks," Marci Liroff, a casting director on films like "The Spiderwick Chronicles" and "A Christmas Story," told TheWrap. "If you have an idea and some moxie and will and charm, you can go make a movie."

Just don't ask Liroff to define the ineffable quality that makes a star, a star.

"You just know it when you see it," she said. "It's so subjective and hard to explain, but sometimes when someone great is reading for a part, the molecules in the room just change."

UN: Syrian refugees riot at camp in Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? The U.N. refugee agency says a riot has broken out at a refugee camp for Syrians in Jordan after some of the refugees were told they could not return home.

Ali Bibi, a UNHCR liaison officer in Jordan, says it's unclear how many refugees were involved in Thursday's melee at the Zaatari camp. The riot broke out after some Syrians in the camp tried to board buses to go back to their country.

He says Jordanian authorities refused to let the buses head to the border because of ongoing clashes between the rebels and President Bashar Assad's forces in southern Syria, just across the border from Jordan.

Bibi says there were no immediate reports of injuries.

He says Jordanian authorities promised to organize the refugees' return home at another time.

Scott Walker to write memoir, sparking chatter about presidential bid

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a conservative darling who took on unions and won, will write a memoir about the experience and 'what the rest of the country can learn from him.'

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), a divisive figure for his battles with public sector unions in his state, is planning to tell his story in a memoir set for publication late this year.

In a statement released by the publisher Tuesday, ?Unintimidated: A Governor?s Story and a Nation?s Challenge? ?will share the inside story of how the battle for Wisconsin was won, the reforms he enacted, the mistakes he made, the lessons he learned, and how those lessons can help conservatives win the battle for America.

The book will tell ?how one brave leader drove real change in his state, and what the rest of the country can learn from him.? It?s not just a memoir, it?s a call to action,? said Adrian Zackheim, president of Sentinel publishers.?

Soon after he was elected in November 2010, Governor Walker pushed through legislation that restricted the collective bargaining rights among most public sector unions in his state. The reason, he said, was to save taxpayers billions, but critics blasted the measures as a backhanded way to hobble unions. The battle drew international attention, culminating in a recall election last year, which Walker won.

The announcement launched a barrage of media chatter about whether Walker?s book is a prelude to an announcement for a White House run.

?We?re in a period right now I like to call ?the book primary.? If you?re looking seriously for running for president, you better be writing a book.? He?s somebody we definitely have to consider is looking at 2016,? Robert Costa, Washington editor of the National Review, told CNBC Wednesday.

Former Obama campaign consultant David Axelrod also used the book announcement to forecast a Walker run. He tweeted Wednesday: ?When politicians write memoirs they?re generally thinking ahead. Scott Walker is writing his memoirs. You figure it out.?

Sentinel publishers launched in 2003 and has focused on high-profile conservative figures. To date, Sentinel has published bestselling books by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R), South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R), former Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R), former Republican presidential nominee Mike Huckabee, and tea party pundit Ann Coulter.

According to the National Review, Walker personally selected Marc Thiessen as his co-writer. Mr. Thiessen is a former adviser and speechwriter to President George W. Bush and Mr. Rumsfeld. Later, he became a columnist for The Washington Post. He also wrote ?Courting Disaster,? a 2010 New York Times bestseller that defended the torture interrogation methods used by the CIA in the war on terror and criticized the intelligence capability President Obama?s administration.

A poll released last week by Marquette University in Milwaukee shows Walker?s approval rating remains relatively unchanged since last fall. Fifty percent of voters approve of the job Walker is doing, compared with 49 percent in October.

Welcome back to BracketRacket, the one-stop shopping place for all your NCAA needs.

Today's edition includes a social media bracket, a touching moment between competitors and a little dance called the Larranaga Shuffle. Oh, and we've got Dickie V and his new rival, dolphins. Not the Dolphins, just dolphins.

    ___

    SOCIAL MEDIA BRACKET

The advent of social media has added to the NCAA tournament experience, allowing fans to comment before, during and after every game, creating an extra buzz to March Madness.

But can social media have an impact on the games?

    The answer is, maybe.

Using an algorithm it calls "Prime Buzz," the digital marketing company Prime Visibility tracked the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament to see if the buzz created on Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels reflected how the teams did on the court.

In other words, do teams with the greater amount of buzz win more games?

    It seems so.

After tracking social media conversations from 24 hours before the start of games until the end of games in the first round, Prime Visibility found that 25 of the 32 teams with more buzz won, as did 11 of 16 in the second round.

The team that generated the most buzz was Florida Gulf Coast University, the first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16, and the lowest was Northwestern State, which didn't make it out of the first round.

The highest discrepancy between teams was FGCU's 95.48 percent to 4.52 percent for San Diego State.

Check out the bracket here: http://bit.ly/16dYAEf

    ___

    TOUCHING MOMENT

In the moments after Florida Gulf Coast knocked off San Diego State to reach the Sweet 16, Aztecs guard Jamaal Franklin didn't race off the floor. Instead, he tracked down FGCU's Sherwood Brown to give him congratulations in one of the weekend's more heartfelt moments.

Franklin hugged Brown as he gave him some words of encouragement, tapped him on the chest as he kept talking and hugged again before separating.

Here's the moment http://goo.gl/ZJrc4 and what Franklin had to say about it after:

"I just told him just keep being the leader that he is, make sure the ball is in his hands, make sure he does what he has to do to keep his team rolling," Franklin said during San Diego State's postgame news conference. "And just make sure they stay together because those guys we played against right now are just like us, they all love each other and they all play together. They just want to win. And you can see at the end of the game, a lot of teams win games and just leave the court, but they embraced it. They embraced it together, not just one another."

    ___

    THE HEADLINES

The day after Florida Gulf Coast's victory over San Diego State to reach NCAA tournament's Sweet 16, the News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla., ran a large photo of the 15th-seeded Eagles celebrating with the headline: "SWEET 15!"

Turns out, sweet was a common theme in many headlines on Monday ? at least for teams that won ? as you can see in this link from Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard showing selected front pages from around the country: http://bit.ly/13q4FzT

Fox Sports also unleashed this headline: OMFG-CU! And no, it's not text-speak for something crass. It stands for Oh My, Florida Gulf Coast University!

    ___

    DOIN' THE LARRANAGA

Miami coach Jim Larranaga asked his players to be fighters and they came through, clinching a spot in the Sweet 16. Once they did, Larranaga celebrated by his own version of the Muhammad Ali Shuffle, something we've dubbed "The Larranaga Shuffle." See his moves in this clip: http://bit.ly/10bC4Yz

And some more Hurricanes video, of senior Justin Gamble pulling off a video bomb: http://bit.ly/XChjE2

    ___

    DICKIE V vs. DOLPHINS

ESPN analyst Dick Vitale did a lot of trash talking to some dolphins as he picked against them in a bracket challenge. http://bit.ly/YDgv1Q

OK, we know it's TV schtick, part of a promotion with Allstate.

Still, Dickie V has to be looking over his shoulder at this point.

The dolphins, from Atlanta's Georgia Aquarium, have picked 30 games correctly in this what's-going-to-happen-next tournament, just one behind Vitale. Among the dolphins' gets were Wichita State over top-seeded Gonzaga, Florida Gulf Coast over Georgetown and La Salle over Kansas State.

To be fair, Vitale is in better shape for the rest of the bracket. He has Louisville beating Indiana in the title game while the dolphins' Final Four teams have all been eliminated.

    ___

    STAT OF THE DAY

You're bracket may be busted, but you're still watching.

Ratings for the NCAA tournament are the highest in 15 years and up 27 percent from last year. The broadcasts on CBC, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged a 5.8 household rating and 12 share, the highest rating for the tournament's first week since 1998. That year, the rating was 5.9 and 15 share.

The broadcasts also had the highest viewership since 1993, averaging 8.9 million total viewers ? a 9 percent increase from a year ago.

    QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Well, I'm glad I'm 62 instead of 42 right now. I think I can speak for all the commissioners ? this is something that I don't think any of us enjoy. However we react is going to impact somebody else, and, look, it's been going on all the way to just about all the leagues. I don't think any of us think this is the highlight of our career experiences by any stretch." ? Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Tom Yeager after George Mason became the latest team to switch conferences by announcing it was leaving for the Atlantic-10.

Why have a long term relationship without marriage? - The Student ...

Hi everyone, I've been thinking a lot about my future lately. Im in a relationship with someone a few years older than I am, we've been going out for a year now and I think maybe some day we could end up getting married. But that scares the s*** out of me.

She's my first real relationship and everything has went really well so far, but when I think about marriage and my future and that she might be the only person I'll be with for the rest of my life it puts a lot of pressure on how I feel about her right now.

As in, if I don't really really feel deeply and madly in love with her every day I'm worried that I shouldn't commit any further, because in 5 or 6 years we mightn't like each other at all, and I keep hearing these things like, if you have any doubts at all that she's the one then she isn't but I think that's bs. I think you have to be an idiot not to think deeply about a commitment like marriage.

But I know I'm over thinking, so to help me forget about marriage for the time being, what other reasons are there to be in a long term relationship if you don't intend on staying with that person forever? I'd like to concentrate on those reasons and not stare too deeply into the future.

Sen. Portman's Son Writes About Coming Out

Two weeks after his Republican senator dad announced his support for gay marriage and one day before the Supreme Court is to hear arguments on the issue, 21 year-old Will Portman penned an editorial in the Yale Daily News describing how he came out as gay.

"In February of freshman year, I decided to write a letter to my parents. I'd tried to come out to them in person over winter break but hadn't been able to. So I found a cubicle in Bass Library one day and went to work. Once I had something I was satisfied with, I overnighted it to my parents and awaited a response," Portman writes.

"They called as soon as they got the letter. They were surprised to learn I was gay, and full of questions, but absolutely rock-solid supportive. That was the beginning of the end of feeling ashamed about who I was."

In his piece Will Portman discusses the difficulty of coming out about his sexuality as his father was being vetted for the vice presidency. Though he admits that his coming out prompted he and his father to begin talking about the policy issues surrounding marriage for same-sex couples, Portman writes that he did not want his sexual orientation to become an issue during the presidential campaign.

"My dad told the Romney campaign that I was gay, that he and my mom were supportive and proud of their son, and that we'd be open about it on the campaign trail."

Portman continues, "When he ultimately wasn't chosen for the ticket, I was pretty relieved to have avoided the spotlight of a presidential campaign. Some people have criticized my dad for waiting for two years after I came out to him before he endorsed marriage for gay couples. Part of the reason for that is that it took time for him to think through the issue more deeply after the impetus of my coming out. But another factor was my reluctance to make my personal life public."

That "rock-solid support" that Will attributes to his father was made evident earlier this month when Sen. Portman publically reversed his opposition to gay marriage.

"I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn't deny them the opportunity to get married," Portman wrote in an op-ed that ran in the Columbus Dispatch.

Portman came out in support of gay marriage at a crucial time. This week the Supreme Court will hear arguments on Proposition 8 and DOMA, two potentially transformative cases regarding the very issue that Portman's son had been urging the senator to consider since he came out during his freshman year of college.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S4 racist? Processor variants listed by country

The Galaxy S4?s processor power is racist.

Okay, not really racist, but it will vary by country, in that some countries will get the advanced Samsung 1.6Hz octa-core Exynos 5 CPU while others will have to do with a Galaxy S4 powered by the 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, instead.

For an understanding of the difference between the quad-core and octa-core, think of it as the number of cylinders in a car ? the more the number of cylinders in a car engine, the better (read: faster) the performance.

In the case of processor cores too, an octa-core processor implements multiprocessing in a single physical package, i.e., multiple cores can run multiple instructions at the same time, increasing overall speed for programs being run on the device, in this case the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone.

In a nutshell, more cores translate into the ability to run more programs at the same time, faster response time for programs, and (this one is up for debate) longer battery life. It is understood that the battery gets saved if/when the device switches to lower numbers of cores when running less power-hungry apps and programs while during running intensive and/or multiple programs, it powers up all the available cores, if necessary.

Back to the Galaxy 4. During the launch of the Galaxy S4 [http://www.emirates247.com/news/galaxy-s4-takes-the-smartphone-battle-to-iphone-s-home-turf-2013-03-17-1.498652], Samsung had revealed that its new spearhead will come in two avatars, one powered by a Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor and the other with its proprietary octa-core Oxynos 5, but did not say who would be getting what.

It has now emerged that the selection of application processor varies by markets, or countries. SamMobile has compiled a list that shows which country gets which model.

The I9500 is the non-LTE Exynos model while the I9505 is the 4G-enabled Snapdragon model. A handful of lucky countries are getting both, including Samsung?s home market South Korea and the UAE.

So, Exynos or Snapdragon in your country? Here?s the list, courtesy SamMobile ? not Samsung, so take it with a pinch of salt until Samsung officially confirms or denies this.
