Executives Discover Innovative Leadership Solutions Via Venture ...

Posted on29 June 2012.

Executives who need to develop innovative leadership solutions should research creative financing sources when planning their new business, product or service strategies. Entrepreneurs don?t have to travel any further than their personal computer for news about raising venture capital funds.

Venture capital is one industry that has been around for the past 60 years or so. However, just like every other industry, it continues to evolve and change. Much of the VC industry?s success is due to the explosive growth of the Internet. The Web has made many information-gathering tasks faster and easier. Updates on venture capitalists and various kinds of venture capital news are readily accessible to the world?s citizens through online media.

Aside from the World Wide Web, there are other sources of venture capital news. Old, traditional sources such as newspapers and magazines continue to provide the necessary candidate criteria or details and information that venture capitalists and entrepreneurs need. These are also good sources of legal updates in the field of venture capital.

Information contributions by VC partners or research associates are published in paper periodicals, magazines or newspapers and can also be found on the Internet. Aside from the printed materials in circulation, some partners even write blogs and lens, operate their own websites and share their expertise in web-posted articles or ezines.

Newsletters and emails are also sources of news. Visitors to a VC-specific site will usually find offers for subscriptions to their daily or weekly newsletters. Inside these publications, sponsoring service providers empower entrepreneurs by providing them with useful articles and practical information. Additional contributions from business experts and capitalists can also be found in these news organs.

Discussion groups and forums are also good venues for posting updates. Online groups, bulletin boards, chatrooms and membership sites give you the ability to exchange ideas and interact with your fellow entrepreneurial colleagues.

Based on the quality and quantity of participants, you can gather advice or tips and learn innovative leadership solutions about the challenging aspects of financing your venture, from raising venture capital to the drafting of proposals to the design of your exit strategies.

Articles on venture capital are not limited to business pages or publications. There are websites which are specifically dedicated to venture capital ? these sites may post news stories or provide video streaming as well. News articles may be categorized into more specific topics such as buyout news, industry news, fund news and transition news.

When a site is classified into clearly defined sections, it makes it easier for the reader to choose which articles to read. So if you are interested in buyouts only, for example, then you don?t have to plow through all articles to find the information that you want. It also helps to have the articles arranged by date, to allow the reader the means to assign currency or relevance to the piece.

With the Internet being worldwide in scope, articles, papers and even application forms can be accessed by practically anyone anywhere, in the same way that we read news, visit offices and updates in our own countries. Everyone with web access can find ways to tap into the innovative leadership solutions being provided by venture capitalist firms.

This goes to show that the availability of venture capital is a worldwide phenomenon. However, in the US alone, close to $29.9 Billion was used for venture capital investment in 2007.

Today?s capitalists are no longer restricted to the US markets only but can now consider funding companies and businesses in China, India and other developing countries in Asia, the Pacific Rim or Middle East and Africa. This is good news for countries in these regions with vast manpower resources but limited access to equity funding.

Entrepreneurial executives can be better informed about the latest trends in VC. Last year, the trend was towards early stage investing. It was estimated that 35% of VC investments will go to seed-stage and early stage deals. On the other hand, expansion-stage funding showed signs of being decreased.

There are some really good websites which provide venture capital news and more. Aside from news, they also provide listings of venture capital firms and the companies that they helped fund.

Find these websites and bookmark them. For entrepreneurs, these sites provide the useful, innovative leadership solutions they need to learn more about the venture capitalist arena.

iPad app teaches Photoshop CS6 in an engaging manner

I've been debating jumping to Photoshop CS6 for awhile. I've had every version of PS since version 1 way back in the distant past and have really looking for someone to show me what the differences between CS5 and CS6 were in an easily understandable way.

To help solve my dilemma, I grabbed a copy of Learn Photoshop CS6 Quickstart edition for the iPad. It's a US $5.00 video tutorial with about 2 hours of videos covering Camera Raw, the new Content Aware tools, HDR, black and white conversions, and the new blur and lighting filters.

French landscape photographer Serge Ramelli is an engaging teacher, and I find I learn more from a video that reading a book. Ramelli keeps it simple, although sometimes he assumes a bit more knowledge than a new user might have. In addition to the videos, you can download the files used in the tutorials and try the techniques yourself.

I learned quite a bit in a short time, and the app answered my questions about whether or not I should upgrade (I should). While my new iPad screen has the very sharp Retina display, I found that I really wanted a larger presentation. Apple AirPlay to the rescue! The videos look great on my 46" LCD screen via the Apple TV.

Ramelli has other video tutorials, including learning HDR, Photoshop CS5, and basic landscape photography. There are also some free previews available to download and sample. I've looked at some of these videos, and they are consistently high value in terms of content but they don't get too technical. It's pretty easy to walk away with new techniques you might have never discovered.

All these Ramelli tutorials are universal apps, but I think the iPhone screen is just too small for worthwhile viewing. The CS6 Quickstart is a 333 MB download and requires iOS3 or greater.

Google Nexus 7 tablet is 7-inch quad-core HD movie, book and game machine

1 hr.

Just as?Google's developer conference was getting started, details of the company's?rumored Nexus 7 tablet emerged. As previously reported, it is a 7-inch tablet powered by a Nvidia?Tegra 3 quad-core processor?that will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and come in 8GB ($199)?and 16GB versions ($249). You can order today, but it ships in mid-July.

The display is true high-def ? 1280x800, so a bit better than 720p ? and there's a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera and microphone?for video chatting, though there's no rear-facing camera. (That's okay -- do you really take pictures with tablets?) It also has a micro?USB port, GPS, near-field communication and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There's no mention of an SD card slot for expanding the memory, however.

Not surprisingly, it was built by (and even branded)?Asus, the manufacturer that had already?made the most headway with quad-core gamer-friendly Android tablets. (See our video on the Transformer Prime below.)

Clearly, at a starting price of $199, the Nexus 7 is positioned to compete with the similarly 7-inch?Kindle Fire, rather than taking on the 9.7-inch?iPad (and the 10.6-inch Surface tablet from Microsoft). And because, with all of those tablets, content seems to be the biggest incentive, Google is playing up the Play store, even granting early buyers $25 in Google?Play credit and "some great free content" including "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Even if you don't think any of the "Transformers" films is truly "great," it is nice to see Google aggressively pushing content, even adding TV shows and magazines to their lineup. Tablet buyers need a reason to buy a tablet.?

Google has (presumably temporarily) made the above video private, along with the following links to the?8GB and 16GB versions on Google Play. They will be back up soon, though, so keep trying. Here are screenshots of those pages to tie you over in the meantime:

?50 Things To Do Before You Are 11 ??

A recent article in the Telegraph titled ?50 Things To Do Before You Are 11 ?? sparked some interesting conversations in the Sheepskin office, we?ve even added to the list!? There was a lot of ?do you remember doing this, do you remember doing that??

An extensive list of wonderful ?Famous Five? type activities, put together by the National Trust is hoping to encourage children to enjoy the outdoors and go off exploring.? Here at Sheepskin, we agree entirely!

Child activities, Unique, Remote, Family Holidays

So many activities on this list that we think are simply great fun ?? even if your older than 11 ?!

Many of Sheepskin?s properties are surrounded by beautiful countryside with streams and forests on their doorstep. The best things in life are the simple things like pooh sticks, building a dam, climbing trees. All things that you and your children can spend hours of fun doing!

We thought about some of our favourite childhood adventures and have linked them with a property?

Check out the crazy creatures in a rock pool? At The Water Mill

The Water Mill in Snowdonia, sleeps 6 with an additional annexe to accommodates a further 2 guests with its own en-suite (great for grandparents!) The house exudes character with its 12th century water wheel that you can see turn from outside the house. ?Be sure to ask the housekeeper on arrival to arrange to have a demonstration and learn more about the mill-wheel.

The working mill which is at the side of the house

Inside the mill which is in the kitchen

At the bottom of the garden is a stream, a challenging run for a game of Pooh sticks while parents enjoy a BBQ on the spacious decked, terrace and keep a watchful eye.

The Water Mill has some availability during this summer, do check out our website for availability or drop us an email at the Sheepskin office at inspired@sheepskinlife.com

Go on a nature walk at Night ? At Manal

The fun and fabulous wobbly bridge.... too much fun!!!

Elan Wye Junction Pool
We love this idyllic spot close to the village of Llanwrthwl, off the A470 road, north from Builth Wells and Newbridge-on-Wye and south of Rhayader. The wobbly bridge across to a hidden meadow is a must! ? 10 miles from Red Kite Barn. Check out the?Wild Swimming website for more of the best spots to take a dip?

Find your way with a map and compass? At Wayside

Wayside, a self catering family cottage, sits amongst a patchwork of fields and forests drape the slopes of this beautiful valley, the soft sounds of farmland drift reassuringly on the breeze. ?This 3-bedroom property is ideal for families with grandparents as there are two double bedrooms and a twin bedroom with 2-single beds. ?With walks from the door into the Aran Mountains it is a perfect place for you and the kids to map out some walks and practise your navigating skills.

Wayside is perfect for a holiday full of exploring and enjoying the outdoors

Run around in the rain?.

We thought we would save the absolute best activity to last.

Wales has a mountainous countryside and is also close to the Atlantic Ocean so rain fall is higher than average. Don?t let it put you off, Sheepskin like to say?there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes. So pack your waterproof and wellies and run around in the rain!

Muddy with Sheepskin Holidays - Unique, Remote Holidays

So go on, let?s encourage children to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and the fun of exploring and being?.. children.

Manal, Red Kite Barn and Wayside are all available this summer. What are you waiting for?

Check out the availability or drop us an email at inspired@sheepskinlife.com

Will hear from you soon to plan your holiday ? ?Like it used to be??

The 'airline ticket giveaway' that won't go away

By Bob Sullivan

The letter warned the recipient that she still hadn't responded to that great offer from "US Airlines" of two free airline tickets, and time was running out. Call the toll-free number now! it urged.

Fortunately, Red Tape reader Mary McNamara ignored it and passed it on to me. But somebody must be calling the enclosed toll free number, because the "great airline ticket giveaway" just won't go away. Complaints about it can be found across the web from a couple of days ago, and from at least two years ago.

Let's take care of the basics first. There is no airline called "US Airlines" -- you're thinking of U.S. Airways. That?s no accident; that?s a technique. A variation of the letter is from "American Airways," a bastardized version of American Airlines. Call the number, and you don't get two free airline tickets; you get invited to a 90-minute presentation where you will be encouraged to join a travel club.

?

In the words of travel expert and consumer advocate Chris Elliot: "I have yet to find a travel club that is legitimate."

I called the toll free number and was told I had to travel from Seattle to Portland to attend a meeting before I could receive my free tickets. But the operator, who identified himself as Josh, gave me the option of calling a friend or relative in the Chicago area and sending that person on my behalf to a meeting there. Thanks to their generous referral program, he said, I'd get free tickets just for talking a (soon to be former) friend into attending.

To save yourself the trouble of calling and listening to the pitch, someone recorded their call and posted it on YouTube.

Elliot, by the way, also received one of these free airline ticket letters recently, and wrote about it on his blog.

The free ticket letter offering has been around for at least two years, and inspired a lot of complaints?in April 2011. It is such a nuisance that U.S. Airways had to post a "scam alert" on its website.

A representative to the airline told me that she's worked in the company's public relations department for seven years, and the free ticket letter "just kind of resurfaces from time to time." She reiterated, with a heavy sigh, that the airline was in no way affiliated with the offer.

Why would such an offer persist for years, despite all the warnings about it?

"People don't pay attention to details," said Elliot, also the author of the book, ?Scammed.? ?"US Airlines could exist, and the victims are quickly seduced by the offer. In other words, this thing is still around because it works."

When I asked "Josh" for more details, he said he was working for a company named Universal Travel Deals. The point of the 90-minute meeting -- he called it a "meet and greet" -- was to drum up business for local travel agencies, he said.

"Hopefully, to get people to book travel through them, rather than through those websites, like Travelocity or Expedia," Josh said.?

There are also complaints about Universal Travel Deals in various consumer sites online. When I called the number for a firm named Universal Travel Deals in a Chicago suburb called Tinley Park, a woman who answered confirmed her company was managing free airline ticket offers. When I said I was a reporter, she took my name and number and said she'd have someone return my call. I?m still waiting.

Elliot said he's seen various telephone numbers come and go for the offer, which is a sign that something is wrong.

"The numbers have changed, which suggests to me that they may be moving from state to state," he said. "That's a common tactic to stay a step ahead of state regulators. My guess is this isn't a big enough fish for the Feds to get involved. Either that, or the FTC hasn't received enough complaints about it."

Do letter recipients ever end up with free airline ticket vouchers? That?s unclear, but this much is certain: nothing is really free in this world, and certainly not airline tickets. Letter recipients never get anything just by calling. They have to attend sales meetings, which, according to the few stories posted online by people who claim they?ve attended, exact their own costs.

If you receive an offer like this, please do three things.

1) Read it carefully. It's good practice to find the misleading elements, such as names like "US Airlines."

2) Throw it out and ignore it

3) Complain to your state attorney general and the Federal Trade Commission so someone actually takes a close look what's going on. (Here's a handy contact list for state attorneys general).

Python Causes Panic In Public Rest Room In Tiveria

(Monday, June 25th, 2012)

According to snake catcher Itti Myers of Katzrin, the snake that he carted off from a public rest room in Tiveria on Sunday, was a Burmese Python. He explained it was a young snake, about 3-years-old, measuring about three meters (yards) in length and judging by the snake?s behavior, it was most likely being raised in a home. He warned that while many people like raising snakes, this is not a particularly great snake for the home since it can grow quite large.

Wikipedia: Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus) is the largest subspecies of the Indian Python and one of the 6 largest snakes in the world, native to a large variation of tropic and subtropic areas of Southern- and Southeast Asia. They are often found near water and are sometimes semi-aquatic, but can also be found in trees. Wild individuals average 3.7 meters (12 ft) long, but may reach up to 5.74 meters (19 ft).

Swedish House Mafia Announce Farewell Tour

David Guetta, Zedd, Hardwell, Chuckie and A-Trak tip their hats to house music super-trio.
By Akshay Bhansali

Electronic dance music stars from around the world joined fans this weekend in paying homage to Swedish House Mafia, after the Holy Trinity of House announced via their website that their upcoming tour will be their last.

"Today we want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last. We want to thank every single one of you that came with us on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved," the message reads.

Together the Swedes — Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso— joined their prolific individual talents into one of dance music's most commercially successful and intriguing brands, leading the charge of EDM's American takeover. With five widely successful singles in two years, SHM dominated traditional music festivals like Coachella, sold out Madison Square Garden and hosted their own Masquerade Motel mini-festivals attended by tens of thousands in Miami.

SHM's announcement was hard to believe considering their biggest career undertaking is still before them: a July show at Milton Keynes Bowl in England, which holds 65,000 people.

"I just heard @swedishousemfia are gonna split. I hope it's not true They are really special," David Guetta tweeted on Saturday.

DJ Chuckie tweeted, "Sad news for electronic music, i just heard that the @swedishousemfia just announced they gonna break up!"

Some DJ/producers used the occasion to celebrate how far Swedish House Mafia have come, even thanking them for their tutelage and inspiration.

"Well ... @swedishousemfia will be a legend for ever!" Zedd wrote.

"Just wanted to tip my hat (the A-Trak hat) to @swedishousemfia. They invited me to MSG which was huge. Those are my bros. *#bros," A-Trak tweeted, referencing his opening duties at MSG last December.

Hardwell tweeted, "We gonna miss you @swedishousemfia! You've been a huge inspiration for me, every producer and the whole music scene! #wecameweravedweloved."

But the fun is far from over. There is much to look forward to from Swedish House Mafia, including their Sydney, Australia-inspired new single, possibly titled "Don't You Worry Child" per an SHM tweet and Dancing Astronaut. Upcoming tour dates include the aforementioned Milton Keynes Bowl in England (July 14), recurring weekly dates at Ushuaia in Ibiza (July 4 through August 29) and a final leg of their tour (presumably including farewell dates in the U.S.) to be announced in August.

Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé got chummy while watching their men perform at a Kanye West/ Jay-Z gig in Birmingham, England, on Friday.

The women were photographed giggling with one another among the Watch the Throne tour concertgoers. Usmagazine.com reports that the ladies, dressed rather casually, had a full-on ladies' night. "Kim and Beyoncé were dancing all night!" a source said. "They even went into the mosh pit! It was the most hectic thing ever!"

In another photo taken Friday night, Kim looked like she was singing along while Queen B rested her head on the reality star's shoulder. It's the first time Jay and Yeezy's lady loves have been photographed together. There had been previous reports that B was shunning K even though Kim had been scrambling to make a connection to the pop star. A source adds that it was just a rumor. "Kim and Beyoncé have always been cool," the insider said. "Beyoncé and Jay love Kim and think she's a good match for Kanye."

On Sunday night, the second half of Oprah Winfrey's interview with the Kardashian family aired. In this installment Kim opened up about being friends with the rapper for years before they took a chance on love.

"We met maybe almost a decade ago. I've known him for a really long time — we've been friends for like six or seven years — so it's very comforting to have someone that knows everything about you that respects you, understands, has gone through similar things," the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star said. "I can really relate to his mother passing, he can really relate to my father passing. I mean, there's so many similarities in our life that I feel like I'm at a really happy, good space.

"I don't know why it took so long for us to kind of get together," she added. "But I think I needed to go through all my experiences and some that he's gone through."

New Jersey is a place where Home Inspection costs are not certain. They fluctuate according to multiple factors. Here, we are going to all of them for the convenience of the buyers.

Factors behind the cost of home inspection:

Jerry Sandusky convicted of child sex abuse

By Kimberly Kaplan, NBC News, and M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Handout / Reuters

Jerry Sandusky is seen in a booking photo from the Centre County Correctional Facility in Bellefonte, Pa., on June 22, 2012.

Updated at 11:37 p.m. ET: BELLEFONTE, Pa. ? Jerry Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse Friday night and faces spending the rest of his life in state prison. His attorney said he would appeal the verdict.

Sandusky's attorney, Joseph Amendola, asked Judge John Cleland to allow Sandusky to be released on house arrest, but Cleland summarily rejected the request, saying: "Bail is revoked. Mr. Sandusky is remanded to the custody of the sheriff."

Michael Isikoff, John Yang, Ron Allen, Marianne Haggerty and Hannah Rapplye of NBC News and Jim Gold of msnbc.com contributed to this report by Kimberly Kaplan of NBC News and M. Alex Johnson of msnbc.com. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Sandusky was immediately led out of the courthouse in handcuffs as a large crowd of onlookers cheered. Sentencing was set for late September.

Sandusky, 68, the former longtime defensive coordinator for the Penn State University football team, had denied all 48 counts alleging that he abused 10 boys over 15 years. Two grand jury reports accused him of having used his connection to one of the nation's premier college football programs to "groom" the boys, whom he met through his Second Mile charity for troubled children, for sexual relationships.

Several of the counts are so-called mandated felonies, meaning Cleland has no discretion in sentencing. NBC News reported that he faces a minimum of 60 years in prison.

NBC News

Jerry Sandusky is led from the Centre County Courthouse in handcuffs Friday night.

Cleland, who is a senior judge in McKean County, was brought to Centre County to oversee the trial after local judges recused themselves.

Reaction to the Sandusky verdict

Amendola, who was interrupted by hecklers outside the courthouse?several times, said he had expected the outcome and respected the verdict of the jurors, who didn?t speak to reporters afterward.

Amendola said he believed Sandusky had legitimate grounds for appeal, saying his client had "an uphill battle" because of the extensive pretrial publicity.

"We said we were attempting to climb Mount Everest from the bottom of the mountain. Obviously, we didn't make it," he said.

Defense attorney Joseph Amendola speaks outside the courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., after his client, Jerry Sandusky, was found guilty of sexually abusing children.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, whose office prosecuted Sandusky, said, "A serious child predator ... has been held accountable for his crimes."

Kelly thanked the victims, who she said "came forward to bravely testify in this trial and to finally put a stop to the crimes that were committed."

"We hope that our search for justice will help them and perhaps others looking on nearby and afar," she said.

Grace Gordon, 49, of Bellefonte, also welcomed the verdict but lamented the damage the trial had done to Bellefonte and Centre County.

"It's hard. It really is, to see a small town torn apart like this," said Gordon, who was outside the courthouse with her 23-year-old son and his girlfriend.

Gordon said her father, wrho worked with Sandusky at Penn State, "would have just been devastated to know about this."

"You'd never, ever have dreamed that he'd be that kind of person," Gordon said. "What he did to those kids is just horrendous."

The university that Sandusky served for decades said in a statement late Friday that "we have tremendous respect for the men who came forward to tell their stories publicly. No verdict can undo the pain and suffering caused by Mr. Sandusky, but we do hope this judgment helps the victims and their families along their path to healing."

The university said it would seek to "fairly ... compensate" the victims and invited them to participate in a program to "facilitate the resolution of claims against the University arising out of Mr. Sandusky's conduct."

It said it intended to get in contact with lawyers for the victims "in the near future."

Sandusky was acquitted on three counts: an indecent assault charge?involving "Victim 6", a man who?testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out"; an indecent assault charge involving "Victim 5", who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower; and an involuntary deviate sexual intercourse charge regarding "Victim 2",?who?former assistant coach?Mike McQueary said he saw being attacked in a campus shower.

A trial that riveted the nation
The trial, which opened June 11, culminated months of intense attention that led to the firing of head coach Joe Paterno, who won more games than any other major college football coach in history, many of them with Sandusky at his side.

Paterno died exactly five months ago, a few weeks after the Penn State Board of Trustees dismissed him for not having done enough to stop Sandusky's abuse.

Jurors heard often-graphic testimony from eight of the 10 victims whose accounts were included in two grand jury reports. They told how Sandusky would first win their trust by giving them gifts and taking them on trips with the football team before progressing to hugging, kissing, increasingly sexual touching and, in some cases, oral and anal sex.

In a rare occurrence in an abuse trial, prosecutors also presented the testimony of a corroborating eyewitness ? Sandusky's former Penn State coaching colleague McQueary.

McQueary said the boy had his hands against the wall and that Sandusky was standing up against him from behind. He said he heard a "skin-on-skin smacking sound" and that he had "no doubt" that Sandusky was engaging in anal sex with the boy.

Because they were sequestered, without access to computers, phones or any other way to hear news coverage, the jury of seven women and five men wouldn't have heard newer, potentially damaging information from two other accusers that emerged after they began deliberations.

Sandusky's adopted son Matt said he had been prepared to testify that he, too, was a victim of abuse by his father, according to a statement issued Thursday by attorneys who said they are representing the younger Sandusky.

(NBC News and msnbc.com generally do not identify victims of sexual assaults, but Matt Sandusky chose to identify himself in a public statement released through his attorneys.)

Matt Sandusky: From defender to possibly most damning accuser

Amendola said Friday night that Jerry Sandusky abandoned plans to testify in his own defense because of the prospect of damaging rebuttal testimony by his son.

Nor would they have heard the account of Travis Weaver, 30, of Ohio, who attended Second Mile camps as a youth. Weaver told NBC News in an interview that aired Thursday night that Sandusky performed oral sex on him in the upstairs bedroom of the Sanduskys' home.

Weaver testified to one of the two grand juries but wasn't mentioned in the grand jury reports or called as a witness during the trial.

The end of the trial doesn't mean the case is over.

Two former top Penn State officials, former Athletic Director Timothy Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz, face perjury charges in connection with their grand jury testimony in December, in which prosecutors alleged that concealed what they knew about Sandusky's conduct.

Law enforcement sources have told NBC News that former Penn State President Graham Spanier, who was fired in November, was under investigation for possible similar charges.

Sandusky lawyers raise appeal issue on timing

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's lawyers said they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren't given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial's speed that could become the thrust of an appeal.

And one of the jurors who convicted Sandusky of 45 child sex abuse counts said Saturday he was swayed by the "very convincing" testimony of eight accusers who said the retired Penn State assistant football coach molested them for years.

"It's hard to judge character on the stand, because you don't know these kids," juror Joshua Harper told NBC's "Today" show. "But most were very credible ? I would say all."

A day after Sandusky's conviction, his lawyers disclosed Saturday they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky's November arrest and trial was fast-paced by Pennsylvania standards.

"We told the trial court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court we were not prepared to proceed to trial in June due to numerous issues, and we asked to withdraw from the case for those reasons," attorney Joe Amendola told The Associated Press.

The issues included a scheduling conflict with a defense team member and the need to read a cache of documents produced by a lengthy grand jury investigation. Judge John Cleland denied their request.

The attorneys raised other issues that could be part of the future appeal, saying a mistrial was sought and denied over a repetition at trial of a brief part of a November interview Sandusky had with NBC's Bob Costas.

Jurors in the two-week trial convicted Sandusky of 45 of the 48 counts against him, meaning Sandusky, 68, likely will die in prison.

Harper said the accusers who testified one by one of horrific abuse at Sandusky's hands were each believable, "but then also the fact that we saw this corroborating story between all of them. It was very convincing."

Then Sandusky's impassive face when the verdict was read was confirmation for the jury, he said.

"I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face. No real emotion," he said, "because he knew it was true."

Harper said jurors had some issues with the testimony of Mike McQueary, a then-assistant who said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in the Penn State showers in 2001; jurors acquitted Sandusky on one count relating to the incident.

The case is poised to move to an investigation of university officials' role in reporting the charges; two ex-school administrators face trial on charges they didn't properly report McQueary's account of the suspected abuse in 2001.

Almost immediately after the verdict, Penn State President Rodney Erickson signaled an openness to quickly settle potential civil lawsuits arising from the convictions, saying the school "wants to provide a forum where the university can privately, expeditiously and fairly address the victims' concerns and compensate them for claims."

The university recently reported a $1.8 billion endowment. But both sides have reasons not to want to go to court, said Jason Kutulakis, a Harrisburg-area lawyer who specializes in child welfare and juvenile law. Victims are reluctant to get on the stand and have their credibility attacked, he said.

But "Penn State's got so much egg on their face, they probably just want to make it all go away," he said.

For now, the school is facing one lawsuit from an accuser, Travis Weaver, who was not among those represented in the criminal case against Sandusky.

Lawyers for McQueary, who testified against Sandusky, have signaled their intent to sue, along with a lawyer for one accuser, so-called Victim 5.

Jeff Anderson, who represents Weaver, said that he represents more victims of Sandusky's and that he will ask the court to allow him to begin seeking information from Penn State in Weaver's case.

The next step is to determine the extent of Penn State's culpability, lawyers say. In part, that means finding out who in the university's upper ranks knew Sandusky was preying on boys and could have stopped it.

The former Penn State officials facing charges, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz, are charged with lying to a grand jury about what they knew of a 2001 incident in which McQueary said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a football team shower.

A separate investigation by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the university's handling of the Sandusky allegations, is due later this summer.

Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was fired for a failure of leadership for not going to the police after McQueary told him about that incident. The scandal also caused the departure of university president Graham Spanier.

Philadelphia-based lawyer Fortunato Perri Jr., who followed the trial, said the jury's dismissal of the charge involving the 2001 shower incident could help Curley and Schultz' defense.

"You've now had a jury kind of preview your case with respect to the credibility of McQueary, and they didn't believe him," Perri said. "Who knows if the next jury would believe him or not believe him?"

But the administrators' attorneys would probably be precluded from introducing the acquittal evidence at the separate trial, Perri said.

Sandusky's sentencing is expected to occur in about three months; an exact date hasn't been set. Because of the severity of the charges and mandatory minimum sentences, he faces an effective life sentence.

Until his next court date, Sandusky is one of 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, seven miles from the Penn State campus. He was kept under watch overnight and is allowed access to some personal items including a prayer book, and can get visits from family, friends and attorneys.

Rominger said he planned to visit him on Sunday.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest: lawyer

GUADALAJARA, Mexico | Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:37pm EDT

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Reuters) - A man accused of being a cocaine trafficker and the son of Mexico's most wanted drug lord Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman is an automobile dealer swept up in a case of mistaken identity, his attorney said on Friday.

Mexican marines seized the suspect on Thursday outside Guadalajara and flew him to Mexico City, where they paraded him in front of the media and identified him as Jesus Alfredo Guzman, alias "El Gordo" or "The Fat One."

They said they found him with an arsenal of rifles, pistols and grenades and about $160,000 in cash.

But lawyer Veronica Guerrero told a news conference that her client's real name is Felix Beltran and that he is an innocent car dealer.

"This is a case of total confusion over people," said Guerrero, who was accompanied by a woman who said she is the suspect's mother.

Mexico's federal attorney general's office said it would seek to establish the identity of the suspect using DNA tests and other methods.

Thursday's arrest won praise from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which has sought Jesus Alfredo Guzman since he was indicted for cocaine trafficking in 2009.

His father, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, faces dozens of charges of racketeering and drug smuggling in U.S. courts. There is a $5 million reward for his capture.

The arrest came just over a week before Mexicans vote for a leader to replace President Felipe Calderon.

Brutal clashes between drug cartels and Mexican authorities have killed more than 55,000 people since Calderon launched a crackdown on the gangs in late 2006.

The candidate of Calderon's National Action Party, Josefina Vazquez Mota, is in third place, partly because of public dissatisfaction over the drug war.

On Thursday Vazquez Mota congratulated the marines on the arrest.

Enrique Pena Nieto, candidate for the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has a double-digit lead in most polls.

MIND'S WHY

In describing their conclusions that DNA segments, or jumping genes, that can copy themselves into different parts of the genome may be the cause of the uniqueness of individual brains in What Makes Each Brain Unique, Fred H. Gage and Alysson R. Muotri misrepresent the degree of similarity expected between the brains of identical twins. Their work does reveal an intriguing source of genetic variation between such brains, the significance of which remains to be elucidated.

Yet the authors gloss over the fact that all brains, genetically identical or otherwise, are almost certainly quite distinct as a result of inherent variation in neural stem cell divisions, cell migration events and neural circuit formation. Such variation is created by the unique, probably often random, cellular and experience-dependent interactions that occur during the development of any given brain.

Having worked with start-ups and early-stage businesses my entire career, I have participated in many debates about whether entrepreneurs are born or made. What entices otherwise employable people to work for practically--maybe explicitly--nothing beyond the lottery system known as stock options (the tool Silicon Valley uses to lure young engineers into working crazy hours with no guarantees)? Now I learn that with jumping genes, natural selection is rolling the dice to build brains to meet the challenges of ever changing conditions. Yep, that sounds like an entrepreneur.

STAR BRIGHT

In The Far, Far Future of Stars, Donald Goldsmith states that the luminosity of a star richer in heavy elements declines because of opacity of its outer layers. Then, in the next sentence, he goes on to say that the lower luminosity means that the star consumes its nuclear fuel at a lower rate. So what is it, opacity or lower rate?

Also, one expects that the trapping of radiation by the outer layers would cause the temperature to increase and, consequently, the fusion rate to increase as well. So what is going on?

GOLDSMITH REPLIES: Stars produce energy in their cores, which passes to their surfaces and radiates into space. The lower luminosity results from a higher opacity, which hinders the passage of radiation. A lower luminosity also implies a lower rate of energy production and thus a slower consumption of nuclear fuel. The higher opacity that leads to a greater trapping of radiation produces complex effects in a star's atmosphere, including a possible increase in its size and temperature, but it is the temperature in the core, not in the atmosphere, that determines the star's rate of energy production.

DEPRESSION RELIEF

Lifting the Black Cloud, by Robin Marantz Henig, succinctly and correctly sums up the state of evidence regarding the efficacy of antidepressant medications in saying that they leave a lot to be desired.

There are other alternatives. High-quality randomized controlled trials have shown that aerobic exercise reduces depressive symptoms in cancer survivors and in other populations. In contrast to the common side effects of antidepressants--such as sexual dysfunction, headaches, insomnia and nausea--those of exercise are a pure delight--enhanced libido, better sleep, decreased body fat, longer life, increased strength and endurance, and more. Exercise has the added benefit of low cost and may be modified to match individual needs. Must solutions to the black cloud of depression always be medicinal?

One of the possible new treatments discussed in the article targets inflammation. Immune systemmodulating products of this type can have the unwanted side effect of allowing latent infections to resume activity. And not just latent infections but unsuspected active infections producing inflammation might be involved, so interfering with the immune system will have consequences. Some investigators are looking at the connection between microbes and mental illness. Syphilis is well known as an agent of psychiatric symptoms, and a number of other germs may be as well. In those cases, you would want to recognize and treat the infection, too.

FAULTY PHRASE

A Neglect of Mental Illness, by the Editors [Science Agenda], states that all of us should get over the stigma we still tend to attach to conditions of mental illness.

Was this an intentionally ironic play on words? Isn't the typical, uneducated and frustrating response to mental illnesses, such as depression, to believe sufferers should just get over it? Mental illness is not something one can just get over, nor can intolerance, misunderstanding and fear be overcome that way.

Acceptance and a positive, proactive approach to mental illness can be achieved through education. This article not only missed a teachable moment but did so by opting for a phrase that is universally unappreciated by those suffering mental illness.

NEEDED NUISANCE

In Time to Kill Off Captchas [TechnoFiles], David Pogue argues that variants of the Captcha system used to filter out hacker and spammer programs (bots) from Web sites, including the newer reCaptcha, waste too much of users' time.

ReCaptcha successfully blocks hundreds of spambot attacks on my guest book page daily. No legitimate visitor to the site has ever complained to me about it. I am also 63 years old, wear bifocals and usually surf the Internet on an eight-year-old laptop with a 1,280- by 800-pixel screen. It is very rare that I encounter a Captcha image I cannot decipher, and I almost never have to refresh the image more than once to get one. This leaves me puzzled at the complaints of younger Web surfers who have, presumably, better eyes and better equipment.

So far the only countering move the spammers have come up with I am aware of is to hire Bangladeshis to sit at terminals all day solving Captchas. Because that costs them money, it removes the main incentive for spamming. The problem is thus much smaller and manageable with simple filtering. Further, if anyone ever did come up with an automated solution for Captchas, they could file for a patent on their algorithm and generate more income by licensing it for legitimate optical character recognition use than their spamming activities could hope to gain them.

It would be nice if there was another, better, less bothersome solution to the problem of spambots, but for now there isn't. We use Captchas because they work. They are not the only solution against spambots, but they are the most effective one. Until a way is found to block spam messages or identify them by their source (which would require a major revision of the Internet protocols), we are going to be seeing Captchas. At this time, the alternative is much worse.
