Supersymmetry Fails Test, Forcing Physics to Seek New Ideas

With the Large Hadron Collider unable to find the particles that the theory says must exist, the field of particle physics is back to its "nightmare scenario"

?

As a young theorist in Moscow in 1982, Mikhail Shifman became enthralled with an elegant new theory called supersymmetry that attempted to incorporate the known elementary particles into a more complete inventory of the universe.

?My papers from that time really radiate enthusiasm,? said Shifman, now a 63-year-old professor at the University of Minnesota. Over the decades, he and thousands of other physicists developed the supersymmetry hypothesis, confident that experiments would confirm it. ?But nature apparently doesn?t want it,? he said. ?At least not in its original simple form.?

With the world?s largest supercollider unable to find any of the particles the theory says must exist, Shifman is joining a growing chorus of researchers urging their peers to change course.

In an essay posted last month on the physics website arXiv.org, Shifman called on his colleagues to abandon the path of ?developing contrived baroque-like aesthetically unappealing modifications? of supersymmetry to get around the fact that more straightforward versions of the theory have failed experimental tests. The time has come, he wrote, to ?start thinking and developing new ideas.?

But there is little to build on. So far, no hints of "new physics" beyond the Standard Model ? the accepted set of equations describing the known elementary particles ? have shown up in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, operated by the European research laboratory CERN outside Geneva, or anywhere else. (The recently discovered Higgs boson was predicted by the Standard Model.) The latest round of proton-smashing experiments, presented earlier this month at the Hadron Collider Physics conference in Kyoto, Japan, ruled out another broad class of supersymmetry models, as well as other theories of ?new physics,? by finding nothing unexpected in the rates of several particle decays.

?Of course, it is disappointing,? Shifman said. ?We?re not gods. We?re not prophets. In the absence of some guidance from experimental data, how do you guess something about nature??

Younger particle physicists now face a tough choice: follow the decades-long trail their mentors blazed, adopting evermore contrived versions of supersymmetry, or strike out on their own, without guidance from any intriguing new data.

"It's a difficult question that most of us are trying not to answer yet," said Adam Falkowski, a theoretical particle physicist from the University of Paris-South in Orsay, France, who is currently working at CERN. In a blog post about the recent experimental results, Falkowski joked that it was time to start applying for jobs in neuroscience.

?There?s no way you can really call it encouraging,? said Stephen Martin, a high-energy particle physicist at Northern Illinois University who works on supersymmetry, or SUSY for short. ?I?m certainly not someone who believes SUSY has to be right; I just can?t think of anything better.?

Supersymmetry has dominated the particle physics landscape for decades, to the exclusion of all but a few alternative theories of physics beyond the Standard Model.

?It's hard to overstate just how much particle physicists of the past 20 to 30 years have invested in SUSY as a hypothesis, so the failure of the idea is going to have major implications for the field,? said Peter Woit, a particle theorist and mathematician at Columbia University.

The theory is alluring for three primary reasons: It predicts the existence of particles that could constitute "dark matter," an invisible substance that permeates the outskirts of galaxies. It unifies three of the fundamental forces at high energies. And ? by far the biggest motivation for studying supersymmetry ? it solves a conundrum in physics known as the hierarchy problem.

Gulf of Mexico clean-up makes 2010 spill 52-times more toxic; Mixing oil with dispersant increased toxicity to ecosystems

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? If the 4.9 million barrels of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico during the 2010 Deep Water Horizon spill was a ecological disaster, the two million gallons of dispersant used to clean it up apparently made it even worse -- 52-times more toxic. That's according to new research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes (UAA), Mexico.

The study found that mixing the dispersant with oil increased toxicity of the mixture up to 52-fold over the oil alone. In toxicity tests in the lab, the mixture's effects increased mortality of rotifers, a microscopic grazing animal at the base of the Gulf's food web. The findings are published online by the journal Environmental Pollution and will appear in the February 2013 print edition.

Using oil from the Deep Water Horizon spill and Corexit, the dispersant required by the Environmental Protection Agency for clean up, the researchers tested toxicity of oil, dispersant and mixtures on five strains of rotifers. Rotifers have long been used by ecotoxicologists to assess toxicity in marine waters because of their fast response time, ease of use in tests and sensitivity to toxicants. In addition to causing mortality in adult rotifers, as little as 2.6 percent of the oil-dispersant mixture inhibited rotifer egg hatching by 50 percent. Inhibition of rotifer egg hatching from the sediments is important because these eggs hatch into rotifers each spring, reproduce in the water column, and provide food for baby fish, shrimp and crabs in estuaries.

"Dispersants are preapproved to help clean up oil spills and are widely used during disasters," said UAA's Roberto-Rico Martinez, who led the study. "But we have a poor understanding of their toxicity. Our study indicates the increase in toxicity may have been greatly underestimated following the Macondo well explosion."

Martinez performed the research while he was a Fulbright Fellow at Georgia Tech in the lab of School of Biology Professor Terry Snell. They hope that the study will encourage more scientists to investigate how oil and dispersants impact marine food webs and lead to improved management of future oil spills.

"What remains to be determined is whether the benefits of dispersing the oil by using Corexit are outweighed by the substantial increase in toxicity of the mixture," said Snell, chair of the School of Biology. "Perhaps we should allow the oil to naturally disperse. It might take longer, but it would have less toxic impact on marine ecosystems."

In order to be effective, a Conservation Unit must have available a list of the species that live within it. They also should have detailed information about the distribution of species among the available habitats. It would be difficult to correctly plan the conservation actions and/or monitoring programs without some minimal knowledge about the species (who are the object of those measures). "This is why our study is so important to the park", said Dr. Miranda from Universidade Federal do Maranho (CCAA/UFMA), leading author of the article, published in the open access journal Zookeys.

In Lenis Maranhenses National Park 42 species of reptiles were found. Approximately 80% of them live only in restinga habitats, which comprise about 20% of the area currently protected by the park. Restingas have been strongly disturbed by the clandestine openings of paths created to transport tourists to the dunes in the park, using off-road vehicles. This problem is more severe during the rainy season when paths become muddy quickly, and new ones are continuously opening. This could be extremely harmful to those habitats because their poor soil might severely limit natural recomposition.

"We recorded endangered species in Lenis Maranhenses; particularly sea turtles located in the beach habitats. No one has any idea about the animal activity there! Are they spawning? It's very likely, but we don't have any data! It would be very important to study and monitor those species in the 70 km of beaches of the Lenis Maranhenses National Park" adds Dr. Miranda.

Another turtle species, which deserves attention in Lenis Maranhenses, is the Brazilian Slider Turtle, which has a limited geographic distribution in the coast of Maranho, northeastern Brazil. This turtle is used as a source of food by the extremely poor inhabitants of Lenis Maranhenses and surrounding areas.

"We believe that it would be helpful to promote awareness campaigns to help the conservation of that species, but it is equally important to provide alternatives to the people that live there. These inhabitants, for example, could be placed into the tourism business by providing training courses. They could work as tourist guides, waiters, or cooks. This would not only improve their economic capacity, but also free them of the need to use the Brazilian Slider Turtle as a food item. The efforts for conservation will only be successful with a joint effort of scientists, policymakers and society. We have to talk to one another and look for solutions together", concluded Dr. Miranda.

Software License Optimization: The Power of Software Licensing ...

By Martin Kurzinski

I was just speaking with a customer the other day about optimizing their software spend while mitigating the risk of license compliance audits.? The customer then asked about taking this process to the next level.?How can they project savings from software license optimization moving
forward?? IT environments are always changing.? We discussed several factors that make managing software licenses a continued challenge, including:

  • Changes in technology? e.g. application virtualization, Software as a Service (SaaS) and cloud computing
  • Changes in license models? e.g. SQL Server processor based to core based licensing, changes in roaming use rights, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) licensing changes, etc.
  • Optimizing hardware dependent license models?how do I choose the most cost effective hardware/software combination?
  • Time and cost to implement a change to the environment?organizations need to evaluate the licensing impact of a change, prior to completing work, to minimize cost and risk
  • Determining the effect on multiple software licenses due to a change to the environment ? e.g. operating system, application, and infrastructure software licenses
  • Moves/Adds/Changes?support both Planned and Urgent ?Request For Change? service requests
  • Planning for future growth?the need for trend analysis information to understand the cost impact of growth

Decisions made today can impact your software license position without you being aware until it is too late or you incur significant time and cost to revert the changes.? The concept of a license simulation is to provide you with a software license position prior to invoking any change.? This
?What If? analysis allows you to simulate the changes you plan to make and understand the impact on software licensing. For example, you may consider moving several Microsoft SQL database instances to a virtual farm ? the move can obviously reduce hardware cost, but what will that change do to your SQL Server license cost?? A processor based license may increase the per instance cost, so much so, that it can cost more than the savings in hardware.? However you may also reduce operating system costs.?Does the change make financial sense?

With a software licensing simulation capability, you can model your changes and instantly see the impact on managed licenses.? Changes include:

  • Changes to hardware, for example, adding additional processors, logical partitions, etc.
  • Adding/moving/removing hardware from your environment
  • Adding/deleting software from existing computers
  • Moving software from one computer to another, including movements of virtual machines
  • Server clustering, active, passive, non-production, and backup roles, etc.

In the figure shown below, the impact of any of the described changes will be reflected in the license summary report.? This license summary details the changes from original license consumption, proposed new consumption, change in consumption, financial impact in dollars and the license compliance position itself (in breach vs. compliant).

What-If-Analysis-screenshot

Figure 1: What If Analysis License Summary Report

The simulation report provides you with the information needed to make the best business decisions and optimize your software spend while maintaining license compliance.? License simulations can help you better manage:

  • Organizational growth
  • Changes in the IT environment
  • Technology advances

and assist in minimizing the impact of new software license models.

What changes do you foresee in your environment?? Is your organization moving to application virtualization?? Do you support server clustering?? Have you calculated the financial impact on licensing?? Hardware can be relatively inexpensive compared to software costs, yet many organizations do little analysis on how future changes will affect their software license position.? Now you can be proactive about software license management and optimization.

Pluto Atmosphere Larger Than Thought, Study Shows

A new simulation of Pluto's upper atmosphere shows that it extends so far from the planet that stray molecules may be deposited on its largest moon, Charon.

The new model predicts that Pluto's atmosphere can extend as far as 6,456 miles (10,390 kilometers) into space, or about 4.5 times the diameter of Pluto. That's more than halfway to Charon.

"That is amazing, from my perspective," said Justin Erwin, the lead author of the paper and a Ph.D. student at the University of Virginia.

Researchers combined two previously known models of Pluto's atmosphere to better estimate the escape rate of molecules into space. Their refinement made a big difference.

"Our [calculated escape rate] is a little bit smaller, but the small change in the escape rate causes a large change in the structure of the atmosphere," Erwin added.

Erwin's supervisor at the University of Virginia, Robert Johnson, was a co-author of the paper reporting the findings, which was published on the preprint site Arxiv and has been submitted to the journal Icarus for publication.

Fire and ice

Pluto's tenuous atmosphere is mainly composed of methane, nitrogen and poisonous carbon monoxide that likely comes from ice on the dwarf planet's surface. The size of the atmosphere changes as Pluto moves closer and farther from the sun in its elliptical orbit.

When Pluto swings near the sun, the sun's heat evaporates the ice and gases slowly escape into space. This process continues until Pluto moves away and the sun's heat fades. Then, the ice builds up until Pluto approaches the sun again.

Pluto's last close approach to the sun was in 1989. That is considered a fairly recent event, because it takes 248 years for the dwarf planet to orbit the sun once.

Researchers are trying to refine the escape rate of the gases ahead of the arrival of NASA's New Horizons probe at Pluto in 2015, so that the spacecraft knows what to look for. For the new calculations, Erwin's team used previously published research from themselves and other scientists. [Destination Pluto: NASA's?New Horizons?Mission in Pictures]

Uncertain atmospheric model

It's difficult to figure out the size of Pluto's atmosphere because of a debate over how best to measure it.

Pluto's atmosphere is heated by infrared and ultraviolet light from the sun. Closer to the planet, ultraviolet light is absorbed in the atmosphere and only infrared heating takes place.

But farther away from the planet, the atmosphere is thin enough that the ultraviolet light affects the molecules. This is why researchers use ultraviolet heating models for the upper reaches of the atmosphere.

Molecules that are escaping from Pluto's atmosphere move through a region called the thermosphere. The thermosphere is where much of the ultraviolet light is absorbed in the atmosphere; this heating drives the escape process.

In the exosphere, at the top of Pluto's atmosphere, the atmosphere is so tenuous that collisions between particles do not happen as frequently.

The boundary between the thermosphere and the exosphere is called the exobase. Researchers aren't sure where the "boundary" is. Because the mathematical model for each section of the atmosphere is different, this leads to vast uncertainties in calculating the size of Pluto's atmosphere.

Last year, Erwin participated in an Icarus paper that demonstrated a new model to estimate the upper atmosphere's extent during the solar minimum (when Pluto receives the least heat from the sun).

This time around, Erwin and his co-authors extended that model to include solar maximum ? when Pluto is warmest ? and solar medium, or average heating.

Pluto is so far from Earth, and so small, that its size isn't precisely known. When forming their model, the researchers assumed that the diameter of Pluto is roughly 1,429 miles (2,300 kilometers). However, the accepted range for the diameter differs by as much as 62 miles (100 km).

The New Horizons team plans to better measure the size of Pluto and its atmosphere when the spacecraft swings by Pluto in 2015.

Sacombank loans for price stabilization program - SaigonMoney.com

A representative of Sacombank?s Cu Chi District branch (R) exchanges a credit agreement with Phu Loc Agriculture, Trading and Service Co-op in HCMC yesterday - Photo: Minh Tam

Traders, trading households and companies joining the price stabilization program in HCMC can borrow money from Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Bank (Sacombank) with an annual preferential rate of 10% over a period of six months to one year.
According to the lender, the total amount of its preferential loans is VND1 trillion which is effective until January 31, 2013 or until when the amount is used up.

The special credit package primarily targets enterprises joining the city?s price stabilization program for a maximum lending period of six months with an interest rate of 10% annually for the first three months.

Six corporate members of the program on Tuesday inked credit agreements with Sacombank branches under the witness of Le Ngoc Dao, deputy director of the city?s Department of Industry and Trade serving as the program?s organizer, and deputy director Nguyen Hoang Minh of the central bank?s HCMC Branch.

Meanwhile, trading households and vendors at traditional markets in the city are also able to gain access to the bank?s low-interest loans when meeting requirements, with their booths used as collateral. The lending term is up to one year with a yearly rate of 10% for the first three months.

Management boards of 36 traditional markets and commercial centers including three wholesales markets on Tuesday signed credit agreements with Sacombank branches. Right after the signing ceremony, staff members of Sacombank will come to every market to instruct traders to apply for loans and to receive the applications from them, Dao said.

Minh of the central bank said local banks now are ready to provide loans to companies, explaining the central bank has directed lenders to promptly support enterprises.

However, the disbursement pace still depends on local enterprises as many firms are hesitant to take out loans given the current mounting inventories and tightened lending conditions.

The VND200-trillion credit package that local lenders have set aside for companies to prepare for the upcoming Lunar New Year has had over VND77 trillion disbursed as of now, Minh said.

A number of banks have relaxed lending conditions for vendors at traditional markets, taking the vendors? stands as collateral, he noted. The lenders are working with authorities of markets to find borrowers as well, he said.

Facebook Copyright Statement: Not Entirely Silly

There?s a meme going around on Facebook, saying that you should post a certain legal incantation on your Facebook wall, to reclaim certain rights that Facebook would otherwise be taking from you. There?s an interesting counter-meme in the press now, saying that all of this is pointless and of course you can?t change your rights just by posting a statement on a website. Both memes have something to teach us about perceptions of rights and responsibilities online.

We can break the user meme into two pieces. The first piece, that Facebook has changed its terms of use to take a broader copyright license in users? postings, appears to be false. Facebook denies it:

There is a rumor circulating that Facebook is making a change related to ownership of users? information or the content they post to the site. This is false. Anyone who uses Facebook owns and controls the content and information they post, as stated in our terms. They control how that content and information is shared. That is our policy, and it always has been.

The other part of the user meme is more interesting: the idea that by posting a statement on your wall you can claw back copyright rights that you would otherwise have granted to Facebook. This has been dismissed by many commentators as naive?and they might be right?but I think we should look more carefully at it. Some commentators claim that it?s ridiculous to say that merely posting words on a website, where somebody has the ability to read them, can create a binding agreement. But of course users are told all the time that the existence of a statement on a website does constitute an agreement.

Facebook itself seems to claim that the mere posting of words on the Facebook site can create an enforceable agreement. Just read Facebook?s terms of use: ?By using or accessing Facebook, you agree to this Statement?? ?Your continued use of Facebook following changes to our terms constitutes your acceptance of our amended terms.? Gee, I wonder where users got the idea that posting words on the Facebook site can create an agreement between the user and Facebook whether or not the other party to the agreement has even read it.

Careful readers will have noticed, too, that Facebook?s rebuttal statement did not deny the legal enforceability of the users? copyright statement. Presumably this is not because Facebook agrees that the statement is enforceable, but because any explanation as to why it should be unenforceable would tend to undermine Facebook?s own claims about its terms of use and related statements.

Now, I?m not claiming that this kind of copyright statement does change the user?s rights. All I?m saying is that it?s not ridiculous for a user to think it might. So let?s skip the scornful denunciations of the popular copyright statement, and talk instead about what does make a unilateral statement enforceable, and what should.

In closing, let me offer my own terms of use, as originally drafted by Cory Doctorow:

READ CAREFULLY. By reading this post you agree, on behalf of your employer, to release me from all obligations and waivers arising from any and all NON-NEGOTIATED agreements, licenses, terms-of-service, shrinkwrap, clickwrap, browsewrap, confidentiality, non-disclosure, non-compete and acceptable use policies (?BOGUS AGREEMENTS?) that I have entered into with your employer, its partners, licensors, agents and assigns, in perpetuity, without prejudice to my ongoing rights and privileges. You further represent that you have the authority to release me from any BOGUS AGREEMENTS on behalf of your employer.

Ask a cook: Frozen berries won't look like fresh ones | Food & Drink ...

Q: I make a strawberry pie in the spring or summer with fresh, whole berries on top. Is there a way I can freeze fresh strawberries and use my frozen berries to make a pie months later?

A: Unfortunately, no method of freezing will get the result you want. Fruit is loaded with water. When it freezes, the ice crystals burst the internal cell walls, so the thawed fruit is very soft and has a consistency similar to cooked fruit.

Instead of topping your pie with out-of-season fresh strawberries that have less flavor, use frozen berries to make a strawberry sauce, called a coulis, that you could drizzle on the pie. Cook the thawed berries with a little sugar (maybe 1/2 cup sugar to 1 cup of berries) and the juice of half a lemon. Puree it and strain it to remove the seeds. You'll still have a pretty pie and it will taste even better.

Budget clash leaves EU summit close to failure

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The prospect of failure hangs over a European Union leaders' summit intended to lay out the 27-country bloc's long-term spending plans.

While heavyweights like Britain and France are pulling in opposite directions, smaller members are threatening to veto a deal to make themselves heard.

Negotiators will try to navigate the myriad demands on the second day of the meeting Friday. A tense first session left many observers predicting leaders will need more time to bridge their differences over the bloc's spending priorities for the years to come.

"I have my doubts that we will come to an agreement," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said early Friday as she left the first day of the talks, which could stretch into Saturday.

The EU budget primarily funds programs to help farming and spur growth in the bloc's less developed countries. In financial terms, it amounts to only about 1 percent of the EU's gross domestic product, but the real significance of the budget is that it lays bare the balance of power between the bloc's members.

The bloc is divided along several lines. The most notable is between richer countries that want to reduce their contributions to the common budget at a time of economic malaise, and poorer ones that rely on EU money for development aid and economic investment.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is the most vocal leader demanding restraint, while French President Francois Hollande wants the budget to keep paying subsidies for farming and development programs for poorer nations.

But Van Rompuy's revised proposal late Thursday did not yield further to Cameron's demands for cuts, keeping to the same total.

Cameron said Friday it was unreasonable to see an increase in the bloc's spending plan for 2014-2020 at a time when many member states are cutting budgets at home.

"I don't think there's been enough progress so far," Cameron said. "I mean, there really is a problem in terms of there hasn't been the progress in cutting the proposals for additional spending. It isn't a time for tinkering. It isn't a time for moving money from one part of the budget to another. You know, we need unaffordable spending cut. That's what's happening at home; that's what needs to happen here."

Hollande and Merkel said another summit meeting might be necessary.

"We should not consider that if we don't get there tomorrow or the day after, all would be lost," Hollande said.

The amount of work Van Rompuy has to do to bring the conflicting views closer together was highlighted Thursday as the bilateral meetings preceding the summit overran, forcing the opening discussions to be delayed by 2 ? hours.

Bilateral talks resumed early Friday, with a first joint session set for noon to see if a compromise is within reach.

Britain is backed by other net contributors to the EU budget, such as the Netherlands, Sweden and, to a certain extent Germany. Public sentiment toward EU institutions in these countries has soured as the EU institutions ? and its common currency, the euro ? are considered largely responsible for the financial crisis afflicting the continent.

Meanwhile, 15 of the EU's most financially and economically vulnerable countries have joined forces to oppose any cuts to funds earmarked for economic growth and development. These countries include not only traditionally poorer member states, many in Eastern Europe, but also those hit hardest by the financial crisis, like Greece, Portugal and Spain.

They argue that they need sustained, even increased, help to close the wealth gap on the continent and that EU institutions need the means to implement their jobs and growth policies.

There is no set deadline for a deal, but the closer it gets to 2014, the tougher it will be for a smooth introduction of new programs.

"In talks with colleagues, I had one message. If this doesn't work out at once, let's be sure that the mood is not that dark that we have to spend months on patching up personal relationships," Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.

If there is no deal up to 2014, there would be a rollover of the 2013 budget plus a 2 percent increase accounting for inflation.

Rejected Beatles audition tape going on auction

By Mike Collett-White, Reuters

Tom Hanley / Getty Images

A group portrait of the Beatles -- from left, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Star and John Lennon -- backstage at the Odeon Cinema in Luton on Sept. 6, 1963.

LONDON --?The Beatles audition tape rejected by a record label executive in arguably the biggest blunder in pop history has resurfaced and will go on sale at a London auction next week.

Ted Owen of The Fame Bureau, an auction house specializing in pop memorabilia, said the 10-song tape was recorded on New Year's Day, 1962, at label Decca's studios in north London.?

Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best - who would later be replaced on drums by Ringo Starr - performed up to 15 songs at the session, 10 of which appear on the tape to be sold on Nov. 27.

The band members had been driven from Liverpool to London the night before, and, despite getting lost on the way managed to get to the studios in time for the infamous session paid for by their manager Brian Epstein.?

Decca's senior A&R (artists and repertoire) representative Dick Rowe, who later became known as "the man who turned down the Beatles," decided against signing them in favor of Brian Poole & The Tremeloes who also auditioned that day.?

"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr. Epstein," he is widely quoted as saying.?

Rowe did, however, sign the Rolling Stones, who went on to become one of the biggest acts in British rock, and experts dispute whether it was him or a more junior colleague who passed the Beatles over.?

There are bootleg versions of the session in existence, but the "safety master," or back-up tape, on offer at auction is unique, Owen said.?

"The most important thing about this is the quality," he told Reuters. "There are bootlegs out there, horrible bootlegs -- some are at the wrong speed, others are crackily and taken from a cassette off an acetate (disc).?

"This quality we have never heard."?

Despite its rarity, the tape has been estimated to fetch $29,000 to $32,000, which Owen said had been set by the owner and was a "sensible" starting point.?

He added that only a handful of collectors were likely to bid for the piece of pop history, and, given that the Beatles own the copyright through their company, a commercial record release based on the tape was extremely unlikely.?

Marked as the "Silver Beatles," which the "Fab Four" were briefly called, the tape comes with a hand-written track list and black-and-white photograph of the musicians posing in leather jackets that would be been used for the record sleeve.?

Also on offer at the Popular Culture auction is a guitar used by Jimi Hendrix to play the bulk of his breakthrough set at the Monterey festival in California in 1967. The black Fender Stratocaster is expected to fetch $192,500 to $288,700.?

Europe Stumbles on Greek Aid After Clash With IMF | Ahrci ? An all ...

European finance ministers failed to agree on a debt-reduction package for Greece after battling with the International Monetary Fund over how to nurse the recession- wracked country back to fiscal health.

With creditors led by Germany refusing to put up fresh money or offer debt relief, the finance chiefs were unable to scrape together enough funds from other sources to help alleviate Greece?s debt burden, set to hit 190 percent of gross domestic product in 2014.

The euro weakened, Greek bonds fell and stocks declined after more than 11 hours of talks broke up early today in Brussels. The next aid payment to Greece, held up since June, remained frozen until at least another emergency ministers? meeting Nov. 26.

?We have a series of options on the table on how to close the financing gap,? German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters. ?We discussed the issue very intensively, but since the questions are so complicated we didn?t come to a final agreement.?

Greece?s fiscal woes have defied three years of rescue efforts, rekindling doubts about Europe?s crisis-containment strategy and maintaining a cloud over the euro, postwar Europe?s signature economic accomplishment.

Euro Falls

News of the deadlock ? unexpected after a prediction last week of a ?definitive decision? by the meeting?s chairman, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker ? pushed the euro down 0.4 percent to $1.2765 as of 9:19 a.m. in Brussels. The yield on Greek 10-year notes rose 3 basis points to 17.13 percent and the Euro Stoxx 50 Index fell 0.5 percent.

Finance ministers failed to tackle the dual task of steering an extra 32.6 billion euros ($41.6 billion) to Greece through 2016 while finding a way to tame the resulting increase in Greek debt, already the highest in Europe and deemed ?unsustainable? by the IMF.

?Further technical work on some elements of this package? is needed, Juncker said in a statement. He stopped short of predicting a deal at the next meeting, which will come after a European Union budget summit starting tomorrow that risks further inflaming tensions between the richer north and poorer south.

A bloc of top-rated creditors led by Germany continues to resist debt forgiveness, telling their taxpayers that the Athens government will pay back in full the 240 billion euros in loans doled out or promised in two rescue packages since 2010.

Debt Reduction

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, gearing up to campaign for a third term next year, has ruled out writing off a portion of Greece?s debt. Politicians in the Netherlands and Finland, also with AAA credit ratings, have told their bailout-weary voters the same thing.

Still, the creditors considered a milder form of debt reduction today with options including cuts in interest rates on loans to Greece, a temporary suspension of interest payments and a longer repayment schedule.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras?s fragile coalition earned the concessions by passing another austerity budget, enacting reforms to make the economy more competitive and recommitting to a privatization program that had made little headway.

Aid Payment

After three years of faulting Greece for failing to deliver on economic promises, the ministers commended the government?s ?considerable efforts.? While the praise indicated that Greece qualifies for the release of a 31.5 billion-euro aid tranche on hold since June, the statement gave no timing for the disbursement.

With unemployment at 25.1 percent, Greece also enjoyed the sympathy of leaders including Merkel, the dominant figure in Europe?s bailout politics, who has gone from threatening to kick the country out of the euro a year ago to praising its turnaround efforts.

The clash with the IMF was triggered by the ministers? decision last week to grant Greece two extra years, to 2016, to cut the deficit to 2 percent of gross domestic product. While designed to address Greece?s growth problem, that gesture forced the country to take on extra debt to plug the higher deficits.

IMF bylaws bar it from lending to countries with ?unsustainable? debts. In Greece?s case, sustainability was defined as debt equal to 120 percent of GDP by 2020. New estimates put Greece?s 2020 debt at 144 percent, potentially forcing the IMF to pull out.

?We made some good work and we?re closing the gap but we?re not quite there yet, so it?s progress but we have to do a bit more,? IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said.

J.R.R. Tolkien estate sues Warner Bros. over gambling, games

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The estate of "The Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien and publisher HarperCollins have filed an $80 million (50 million pounds) lawsuit against Warner Bros. studios over the licensing of characters and plots in online and gambling games derived from the films.

The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Monday, alleges that Warner Bros. and its subsidiary New Line Cinema - which own the merchandising rights to the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" brands - infringed on copyrights by licensing to casino slot machines, online gambling, games and downloads.

Tolkien's estate accuses Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., of "infringing conduct."

"Not only does the production of gambling games patently exceed the scope of defendants' rights, but this infringing conduct has outraged Tolkien's devoted fan base, causing irreparable harm to Tolkien's legacy and reputation and the valuable goodwill generated by his works," the lawsuit stated.

The suit claimed Warner Bros. earned millions of dollars from legal merchandise licensing revenue related to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy of films, which have grossed nearly $3 billion at the global box office.

The estate of the late English author and HarperCollins, a division of News Corp., are asking for at least $80 million in damages.

Representatives for Warner Bros., Tolkien's estate and HarperCollins were not immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit comes a week ahead of the New Zealand premiere of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the first of a new trilogy of films returning to Tolkien's world of elves, goblins and wizards of Middle Earth, based on the "Lord of the Rings" prequel novel "The Hobbit."

The Truth About Link Building And Why It Still Matters To SEO

Link Building Strategies Work

Link Building Rant ? Video Transcription

I have rant I need to get off my chest about link building.

Not so much about link building itself, rather the misinformation that?s being spread by so many SEO experts that I truly believe know better.

I currently have just over 700 members in my Entrepreneur Lab ? Internet Business Accelerator and over the last month, with the launch of the new Google Disavow tool, there?s been lots of ?new ?theories? popping up surrounding SEO and whether or not actively pursuing link building is really a good idea anymore.

So now my students, mostly beginners working hard to launch their first website, are coming back to me confused and concerned with questions like?

?Hey Derek, I?ve been watching this video and people are telling me Link Building is dead?and I shouldn?t be doing Link Building anymore. ?Instead I should just worry about creating good content and link building will happen naturally??

These are new entrepreneurs? hardworking people just starting their first Internet business and they are being told??Don?t worry about Link Building. Just, write good content!?

It?s that whole ?If you build it, they will come!? mentality and it?s really misleading for all of the new entrepreneurs and Internet marketers just getting started.

Sure if you have an existing website that?s getting traffic and it?s established and you?re an authority in your industry then fine, don?t worry about link building. You post content, your following will come and read it and they?ll link back to you.

But if you haven?t hit this ?tipping point,? where are the initial links going to come from?

If you?re just getting started with a brand, spanking new website with no links and you are not getting any traffic then nobody knows you?re out there.

You could put up the best content in the world but if people don?t know it?s there how are they ever going to find it?

I also I think a lot of people have a misperception of what link?building really is?

Many new Internet marketers assume it?s all about spamming links and polluting the Internet with poorly written content? something I would NEVER endorse or teach.

But there are lots great, legitimate link building strategies you can use to build honest, high quality back links that are going to help you rank in the search engines.

But you should NOT just wait for it to happen!

You need to have a link building plan if you want your new website to ever rank well in Google!

This means going out and building high quality back links on social bookmarking sites and social networks.

This means trying and find authority blogs that will let you write guest posts.

This means building high quality feeder pages on Web 2.0 sites like Squidoo, like Hubpages.

This means actively participating in the authority forums in your niche.

And the list could go on!

Here?s my point:?You can NOT ?just say, ?Forget about the link building? build good content and it?ll just happen!?

That?s a load of BS.

If you want to tap into the free, high converting traffic Google can drive your business then you need to build a foundation of good content on your website and then you need to have?a link building plan.

Sure there are just as many spammy link building strategies out there that I would NEVER endorse. But to tell somebody with a brand new website that wants to rank in Google that they don?t need to TRY and build back links is stupid.

So if somebody says to you, ?Link building is dead. Don?t worry about it. You just need to write great content and all of a sudden links will magicially appear.? it?s BS and they probably want to sell you something.

Link building is still the foundation of SEO!

So there?s my rant.

The bottom line is, you need link building. Don?t let anybody tell you otherwise.

Create good content. Build quality back links back to your website and you will see your rankings go up.

And that?s the end of my rant.

Carpe Twitter: Vatican tweets on new Latin academy

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A senior Vatican cardinal tweeted in Latin on Wednesday to urge people to attend the inauguration of, you guessed it, the Holy's See's new Academy for Latin Studies.

"Hodie una cum Ivano Dionigi novam aperiemus academiam pontificiam latinitatis a Benedicto conditam, hora XVII, via Conciliationis V," was the tweet by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi.

The approximate translation: "Today at 5 p.m., along with Ivano Dionigi, we will open the new Pontifical Academy for Latin Studies founded by Benedict. Via della Conciliazione, 5."

It was not the first tweet in Latin - an Italian professor has been doing it for some time - but evidently Ravasi wanted to seize the day, or "carpe diem".

The pope earlier this month announced that he had instituted the Pontifical Academy for Latin Studies, placing it under the auspices of the Vatican's ministry for culture.

Dionigi, a Latin scholar who is rector of Bologna University - widely recognized to be the world's oldest - is the academy's first president.

The pope started the academy to promote the study and use of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.

When instituting the academy, the pope said Latin, which is still the official language of the universal Church, was the subject of renewed interest around the world and the academy was mandated to encourage further growth.
